Album Shine Shine cover Studio album by Joni Mitchell Released September 25, 2007 Genre Folk jazz rock Label Hear Music Joni Mitchell chronology Songs of a Prairie Girl (2005) Shine (2007) Shine is the forthcoming studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell and will be released on September 25, 2007 by Starbucks' Hear Music.[1] It is the singer-songwriter's first album of new songs in nine years, after 1998's Taming the Tiger. Joni Mitchell, who said she was retiring from music several years ago, has inked a two-album deal with Starbucks' Hear Music that will begin with the release of "Shine." The 10-track CD "feels like the return of Joni the storyteller," said Ken Lombard, the president of Starbucks Entertainment who also oversees Hear Music. Mitchell last recorded for Warner Music. [edit] History In 2002, Joni Mitchell famously left the music business. The public first learned that she had returned to writing and recording in October 2006, when she spoke to The Ottawa Citizen. In an interview with the newspaper, Mitchell "revealed she's recording her first collection of new songs in nearly a decade," but gave few other details.[2] Four months later, in an interview with The New York Times, Joni said that the album was inspired by the war in Iraq and "something her grandson had said while listening to family fighting: 'Bad dreams are good--in the great plan.'"[3] Though in The New York Times Mitchell said the album's title would either be Strange Birds of Appetite or If, the title Shine was confirmed by her official website on March 15.[1] The Sunday Times wrote in February 2007 that the album has "a minimal feel, a sparseness that harks back to her early work," adding that "rest and some good healers" had restored much of the singer's vocal power.[4] Mitchell herself described Shine as "as serious a work as I've ever done."[4] [edit] Track listing 1. "One Week Last Summer" 2. "This Place" 3. "If I Had a Heart" * "If I Had a Heart, I'd Cry" is a reaction to the state of the environment and what Mitchell called the current "holy war." In February 2007, The New York Times described the song as "one of the most haunting melodies she has ever written." Of the impetus that inspired her to write the song, Mitchell explained, "My heart is broken in the face of the stupidity of my species. I can't cry about it. In a way I'm inoculated. I've suffered this pain for so long. The West has packed the whole world on a runaway train. We are on the road to extincting ourselves as a species."[3] 4. "Hana" 5. "Bad Dreams are Good" * "Bad Dreams Are Good" was inspired by a comment Mitchell's grandson made at the age of three: "Bad dreams are good, in the great plan." In a March 2007 BBC2 radio interview with Amanda Ghost, the singer jokingly said she'd promised to "cut him in" on the song's profits.[5] 6. "Big Yellow Taxi" * In March 2007, The Guardian reported that Shine will feature a "new version" of Joni's 1970 environmentally-themed hit single.[6] 7. "Night of the Iguana" 8. "Strong and Wrong" 9. "Shine" * Toronto Globe and Mail described this song as "a lush lullaby for the soul."[7] 10. "If" * This song, which will be the last on the album,[8] is based on the poem of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. The jazz-inflected piece features Herbie Hancock playing piano.[9] * "untitled mountain guitar song" o In a recent interview, Mitchell referred to a "second guitar song [inspired when] they decided to whittle down this mountain behind my sanctuary and sell it to California as gravel for Mac Mansions (sic)."[8] [edit] References 1. ^ a b JoniMitchell.com Latest News (update refers to March 27 BBC broadcast of new songs "six months before her first LP in ten years is released," implying a release date in September) 2. ^ Fischer, Doug. Hi Marion, Sorry if this has already been discussed but let me just say that you have every right to be mad at this glaring omission of Joni in the list. She is not only a titanic presence and influence for a lot of musicians but she towers among her so-called peers and is up there among the great composers of any period. Maybe not in the same idiom as most classical composers but is excellent in what she has accomplished in the idiom she chose to write. I have come to realize that writers/authors/academics chose the subjects they feel most passionate about. Their own versions of the truth most of the times omit those equally deserving of accolades/dissection. And in my own experience with professors and so-called academics, they privilege thoughts/ideologies and make that THE last word. That is why I feel that among the provocateurs, Foucault (and Derrida too but let us not be carried away here) reminded us that there are other spaces, other views, other perspectives that should be heard and should be given. Joni will always be in anyone's list of greats in music in my opinion but then that is probably just my (and most of us) version of the truth. Wow, I am suprised that the authors (or rather one of the authors) took time to respond and defend their omission of Joni. Although I don't really buy the 'leaving the rock scene' and 'not typical of the era' thing as the reasons for the omission, I am quite convinced that they must have regarded Joni highly too although I need to read what they have to say about her when they do write about her in the future. Personally, they should also include Laura Nyro and RLJ too but then these women may not be 'typical' in categories chosen. Joseph Marion Leffler a icrit : Hi Bob, thank you for responding! I see your point and I know this, of course, still it upsets me every time. I couldnt let go so I emailed one of the authors asking for an explanation. And he replied promptly, saying they did not include Joni because she was not typical of the era they wrote about, the folkrock of the 60's! Also, she left the rock scene and went on to other genres so they didn't feel obliged to include her in the book at all. But, he says, "to show you we don't have anything against her I can tell you that my co-writer wrote the speech for Joni when she received the Polar Award". Yes, figures! The speech defined her as "one of the most important female singer/songwriters", a praise Joni would rather be without, as we all know. Now I will let go and listen to Joni instead. I think FTR will be appropriate. Firstly Marion, it doesn't really matter - so take a good breath and calm down. Secondly, historically most rock writing is done by men so its a male-dominated field. As such, men don't want to admit to the truth that a WOMAN can beat their best, so they'll string up the typical litany of men and either omit the women or mention them as an aside. While I enjoy Rolling Stone magazine, they are notorious for doing this. As for me, I'm comfortable enough with my masculinity that I'm not intimidated by the fact that Joni stands head and shoulders above the guys in the writing department and I have no problem admitting it. Very illuminating. Although I do not have anything substantial to say about adoption, I was wondering if you watched any of these films that dealt with adoption: (1) Losing Isaiah (2) Secrets & Lies (3) Immediate Family (4) Born in Absurdistan If you have seen any of these films, I would like to hear what you have to say (or email me off-list). Mike Leigh's "Secrets & Lies" is my favorite in the list. I am not sure if it is possible for Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn's character) to not know that she had a (black) baby, but her coming together with Hortense (the underrated Marianne Jean-Baptiste) in the course of the movie is very realistically portrayed onscreen. "Born in Absurdistan" is a funny Euro movie the theme of which verges on the black comedy and can be painful. "Immediate Family" has its moments but the ending was predictable. Same with "Losing Isaiah". Joseph in Apple Chill np: more humming of the A/C Marion Leffler a icrit : Hi Mags, thank you for your informative postings on the adoption laws and procedures in Canada. It certainly helped me to understand some things better. For example, I always assumed the Gibbs new Kilauren's name was originally Kelly. I imagined they renamed her with a similar but somehow "more serious" name because maybe they thought the name Kelly was too frivolous or something. Instead, the similarity is purely coincidal! Not knowing anything about the birth mother must have made them wonder about Kilauren's biological inheritance sometimes, I guess. Also, if they found traits in Kilauren they did not recognise in themselves they might have been tempted to "blame" them on the unknown birthmother. I'm not saying they did, just guessing they might. Kilauren, in her turn, must sometimes have felt lonely, finding herself to be different from her family and not knowing why. And Joni - signing away her child forever - well, she said it best herself, she was sad and sorry but not ashamed. Yet, she couldn't forget her child and had to live through the torment. I have no personal experience of adoption myself but a couple of years ago there was a popular tv-show called "Lost without a trace" in Sweden (and, I think, similar shows were running in other countries, too). It was about adopted children, now adults, who were looking for their birth parents. Judging by this show, it seems to me that adoption laws are similar all over the world. They grant the birth mother anonymity but also prohibit her to search for her child later. Some countries allow grown children to look for their biological parents and open up the archives for them but not for anybody else. In this program journalists helped find the biological parents - - the mother mostly - and the reunions were always very moving scenes. Of course, the programs stopped there and did not follow up what happened from that point onwards. I can only guess at the emotional roller coaster all parts involved will have had to experience. In Kilauren's case there was the additional task of having to deal with the fact that her birth mother is a world-famous artist. As for Joni, I imagine she repressed the guilt she probably felt after all over the years and had to face Kilauren with that. Being an unwed mother in the 60's there was no way you could win. If you gave up the child for adoption or if you had an abortion you were a bad woman, if you kept the child, you had to wear the mark of a "fallen" woman, along with all the other hardships. Often enough your family would turn away from you and leave you to struggle on your own. Hard to believe but sadly true. My own mother never failed to "bless" me with the words "don't you dare come home pregnant" when I was a teenager trying to have some fun on a Saturday night. - - So Joni was trapped with these choices between "the plague and cholera". From this perspective you could probably say that the adoption laws had the best intentions to make life easier for the mother. Once she gave up the child, it was as if she never had been pregnant. She was not a mother anymore. Then again, motherhood/parenthood is not only a biological fact but grows out of caring for and loving a child at least as much. The adoption laws probably helped adoptive parents to grow into their roles. With the birth mother unknown to them they were free to think and act as if the child never had had any other parents for as far as they knew she hadn't. I always feel as if I am eavesdropping on someone else's life when I'm watching Leigh's work as opposed to watching a fabricated movie. Speaking of unique directors, I watched the latest David Lynch film "Inland Empire" this week...whew! A difficult view even for a Lynch fan like myself. Three hours long and almost beyond understanding, like the infamous episode of 'Twin Peaks' with the dancing midget. They presented the book as music history written by university professors, which gives it an air of legitimacy and objectivity that it does not deserve! Nowhere in the book do they even hint at the fact that this is their personal take on rock history. When journalists write books you know they do it from their personal perspective and you are free to disagree but to people outside the academic world university professors are believed to be right, for who else should know? (Irony, I point this out just in case...) I hope they have students that challenge them at least! Secrets and Lies is poignant on many levels, because it demonstrates so beautifully, the ripple effect that goes on behind the scenes in the lives of those involved, with and without words. Joseph, if you are interested in the subject, there's a wonderful film called The Other Mother, a story about the reunion and after life of a woman who decided to search for her birth son.
