I real believe the live studio recording captures the magic of Joni's music as well as the fresh vibe of 9 musicians who've stumbled upon a rich musical friendship. Kindred souls that share the love and message of Joni. A message that changed us all. We all just had a great time being together creating this music. While researching the music for this project, I came across a video on Youtube of Joan Anderson performing the "self-written" folksong "What Color is a Man". This turned out to be a 20 something Joni Mitchell performing a song that has never been released or recorded. Even at this youthful age, her sharp ability to paint with words and her edgy guitar was fully present. View the Video here. One night of his music with acoustic instruments at church and the same music the next evening with the electric band at Threadgills. In 1996 I began writing string arrangement for a local artist named David Rice. He had just been signed to Sony music and several months later he decided to record his next album at Gabriel's Real World Studios in Bath England. David Rice, John Pointer, and the sublime Suzanna Choffel will join us in an effort to break down and recreate the music of Gabriel the Strings Attached way. There's also the possibility of a famous local singer making an appearance. But I can't make any promises. Some songs you can expect to hear are: Mercy Street Biko In Your Eyes Don't Give Up Solsbury Hill Red Rain and a helping of early Genesis songs picked out by David Rice. B Now I donbt know if this is what Joni had in mind, but at least at this point, Shine represents hope to me.B Yes the world is messed up, and yes there are travesties every where you look, but at the same time, humans are capable of wondrous acts, especially when things appear to be at their bleakest. And as for the bleakness, I think Joan is looking for that little spark of good among all the tribulationss - - better to light one candle than to curse the darkness, y'know. I went to see my doc today, because I had had bronchitis with a horrible wheeze, so he wanted me back in ten days to make sure the wheeze was gone. I noticed on his desk a beautiful picture of a wee baby that I thought might be a painting. I kept looking at it and then thought to ask, "Do you have a new grandchild?" and sure enough, it was a photograph he took of his first grandchild, a little girl, when she was only two hours old. The photograph was beautifully done and it seemed like it was bathed in golden light. The child was sleeping and absolutely peaceful and perfect-looking. He was so happy to be a grandfather for the first time and wanted me to see another, larger photo, also beautiful. I don't know about you but, when things are really shitty, I find it very reassuring to see some sign of simple happiness and goodness, because it reminds me that things are not always horrible, that life goes on and all that cliched stuff. I think Joan is looking for the light in the gloom and is, ultimately, optimistic. I don't like her version of STB because it adds nothing to and, in fact, takes something away from one of the great poems of the 20th century (if not the greatest). I don't mind her using the Kipling poem, which is not a great poem, but messing with Yeats is, IMO, not a good idea. Wish she'd done a song to Yeats instead, along the lines of Judgement of the Moon and Stars. - --AJ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 20:45:12 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: Slouching Towards Bethlehem Some of us are Yeats fans. The cover is completely positive....looking for hope. The lyrics, though Joni takes stabs at many things and points out many wrongs in the world, still carry hope. Just the fact that the song "If" closes the album presents the idea of light and hope and good. Shit happens but if you can still manage to find the light, you'll be ok. There is still good to be recognized. - -Monika NP: I Feel Fine- the Beatles ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:03:40 -0700 (PDT) From: jeannie Subject: Re: Slouching Towards Bethlehem I think joni gave the poem an awakening, which may be necessary for these times. I'm very interested in Carl Jung and his work. I also very much like personality tests and things of that nature. If you're bored, find out what "Jung" type you are here: _www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp_ (http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp) I am an ENFP type of person according to this test: General: ENFPs are both "idea"-people and "people"-people, who see everyone and everything as part of an often bizarre cosmic whole. They want to both help (at least, their own definition of "help") and be liked and admired by other people, on bo th an individual and a humanitarian level. They are interested in new ideas on principle, but ultimately discard most of them for one reason or another. Social/Personal Relationships: ENFPs have a great deal of zany charm, which can ingratiate them to the more stodgy types in spite of their unconventionality. They are outgoing, fun, and genuinely like people. As SOs/mates they are warm, affectionate (l ots of PDA), and disconcertingly spontaneous. However, attention span in relationships can be short; ENFPs are easily intrigued and distracted by new friends and acquaintances, forgetting about the older ones for long stretches at a time. Less mature ENFPs may need to feel they are the center of attention all the time, to reassure them that everyone thinks they're a wonderful and fascinating person. ENFPs often have strong, if unconvential, convictions on various issues related to their Cosmic View. They usually try to use their social skills and contacts to persuade people gently of the rightness of these views; his sometimes results in their negle cting their nearest and dearest while flitting around trying to save the world. Work Environment: ENFPs are pleasant, easygoing, and usually fun to work with. They come up with great ideas, and are a major asset in brainstorming sessions. Followthrough tends to be a problem, however; they tend to get bored quickly, especially if a newer, more interesting project comes along. They also tend to be procrastinators, both about meeting hard deadlines and about performing any small, uninteresting tasks that they've been assigned. ENFPs are at their most useful when working in a group w ith a J or two to take up the slack. ENFPs hate bureaucracy, both in principle and in practice; they will always make a point of launching one of their crusades against some aspect of it. AND: The Champion _Idealists_ (http://keirsey.com/personality/nf.html) aka ENFP's are abstract in thought and speech, cooperative in accomplishing their aims, and informative and expressive when relating with others. For Champions, nothing occurs which does not have some deep ethical significance, and this, coupled with their uncanny sense of the motivations of others, gives them a talent for seeing life as an exciting drama, pregnant with possibilities for both good and evil. This type is found in only about 3 percent of the general population, but they have great influence because of their extraordinary impact on others. Champions are inclined to go everywhere and look into everything that has to do with the advance of good and the retreat of evil in the world. They can't bear to miss out on what is going on around them; they must experience, first hand, all the significant social events that affect our lives. And then they are eager to relate the stories they've uncovered, hoping to disclose the "truth" of people and issues, and to advocate causes. This strong drive to unveil current events can make them tireless in conversing with others, like fountains that bubble and splash, spilling over their own words to get it all out. Champions consider intense emotional experiences as being vital to a full life, although they can never quite shake the feeling that a part of themselves is split off, uninvolved in the experience. Thus, while they strive for emotional congruency, they often see themselves in some danger of losing touch with their real feelings, which Champions possess in a wide range and variety. In the same vein, Champions strive toward a kind of spontaneous personal authenticity, and this intention always to "be themselves" is usually communicated nonverbally to others, who find it quite attractive. All too often, however, Champions fall short in their efforts to be authentic, and they tend to heap coals of fire on themselves, berating themselves for the slightest self-conscious role-playing. - -Monika ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 21:14:07 -0500 From: "AJ" Subject: Re: Slouching Towards Bethlehem ----- Original Message ----- From: jeannie I think joni gave the poem an awakening, which may be necessary for these times.
