While I'm here - the drug thing. Joni told musician magazine a while back (in their 'drug' issue) that she felt like drugs produced a wild boost to creativity initially, then came back to bite you in the ass later. My feeling is this: Starting around the time of C&S, coinciding with her LA Express tours, Joni started using more and more cocaine. I think that drug fueled the entire Rolling Thunder tour, and I think it's one of the reasons she needed to regroup after and she used the need to get her car back acorss the country as an excuse to detach. Look at the pics of her at Mandolin Brothers - too thin. Pointy, in fact. I think the cocaine experiment worked well for Hejira, but by the time of DJRD, perhaps she felt it was muddying the waters of her mojo. I also have always felt that during this time, Joni started to lose her sense of humor a bit - something cocaine definitely does to you (I speak from unfortunate experience - I spent several years as a slave to the drug, eventually moving into the freebase realm - basically making my own crack.the 90's were a mess for me - I've now been sober for a number of years). You can even hear it in the different ways she adresses her audience between the 74 and the 76 tours - - she sounds cranky, malcontent - irritable and misunderstood-feeling during the latter performances. The Court and Spark shows still had some of the bubbly, pre-jazz Joni flavor to them, a playfulness that went missing for a while. I think the Guerin breakup happened somewhere in there as well, probably making her even more fussy. I've also always thought there was probably a fair bit of cocaine use during the Wild Things tour - young guys, early 80's.seems inevitable. But Joni was giddy and in love, so the personailty shift is less noticeable. I remember being on the phone with Wally Breese sometime in 1994, on the cusp of 'Indigo' coming out.I was telling him about this dream I'd had regarding the cover art for the "How Do You Stop" CD single - a photo of JM, seated before a huge pile of white powder, her fingers running up into her hair/over her ears on either side and a look of horror on her face with the song title underneath. I've mentioned that here before - the mind works in strange ways - in this case, telling me I'd ought to get out while I still can. Oh well - live and learn. For some odd reason, Joni opened up for Bob this particular night. If memory serves me correctly, this should be Dylan's tour with Tom Petty. Maybe it was a one-off, I don't know. Before the concert, I picked up a dozen roses, a card, and a stuffed tiger from TY. We arrived a little late and missed the opening number...I was wearing a suit, tie, and carrying the flowers, etc... I must have looked pretty distinguished because someone asked my friend Connie who I was as if I was somebody important. I was thrilled beyond belief to finally see Joni live and Bob Dylan was a good chaser as he was really rocking and I need to come back down from being on cloud 10. Unfortunately, I was not clairvoyant and was not able to meet up with the jmdl (whom I had never heard of) as Paul IV so politely suggested I should have. I had all access back stage passes (cause i was on staff at the time) but I never did go back. I wanted to just be in the audience and hang out and listen to every note. It is where she debuted the VG-8 and it gave her some troubles. Gary who worked with Roland and later became a friend of mine was helping her with her sound. They had stayed up all night in her room the night before the show programming the VG-8 with the patches for her show. The patches were never sound checked or anything so when she hit the stage and opened with Sex Kills (with a somewhat large and very processed and somewhat overdriven sound) it scared the shit out of the sound man that so much could be coming from one input. I can't remember who was on before her but they had drawn a huge audience (probably over 40, 000), but most if them were gone before she ended. Alot of them were pissed she was not playing "THE HITS" as it were, but I was so happy to hear whatever she chose for her set and I was delighted to just be there. 1998.05.19 San Jose Arena San Jose CA >The first time I met some folks from the list. Wow, I haven't checked my email since yesterday morning and I miss out on all this! I've been working at my radio station the past five days. I'm only now catching up ! Man, how exciting is it that we get to read the lyrics before the album is even out? I am currently reading them as I write this email. I'm very much a "words" kind of person so I appreciate seeing them on paper, or well, on the computer. I do think they will surely come alive in the recording! I'm also a "music" person as well as a "tone of voice" person. Tone of voice meaning I need some passionate, moving vocals to carry the words! The way someone sings is very important in getting the meaning or message across. The way Joni sings, you feel every emotion she feels. You see everything she sees. She conveys it down to the core. There aren't TOO many singers I can think of that are able to capture the essence of a song. Many are more interested in the performance aspect of it or are just flat in their emotions while singing for whatever reason. What I particularly find interesting about this album is that it contains an instrumental. Since I don't own all of Joni's albums just yet, I have one question. Have we seen this before from Joni? A purely instrumental track? I am glad to see Joni is playing piano again after reading from all of you that she hasn't played piano in quite some time. The piano is such a beautiful and lonely sounding instrument. There are so many emotions a piano can capture that a guitar couldn't. Of course, I would never want only all piano and no guitar. I am a guitar girl through and through but when you hear that special chord or progression or whatever it is being played on a piano, when it is right, there's nothing else like it. I just finished reading the words but will surely read them again (and am in anticipation to actually hear them!). These lines caught my eye straight off, "Strong and wrong You lose everything Without the heart" Amen to that! - -Monika ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2007 18:33:02 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: More information on Shine Em "calmly" wrote: (LOL....look at the pot calling the kettle black!) It was an old mill turned into a music roadhouse that was open from 1971 - 1982. I'm guessing maybe Ashara or Chuck E. may have been there. There's an article about it in today's paper. I'm sharing it mostly because there is a story about Miles Davis: "Miles Davis, January 1974 - The legendary (and legendarily temperamental) jazz trumpet player was booked to play several nights at the Shaboo, but he canceled the first night. "His road manager called from the Willimantic Motor Inn and said, `Miles canceled the first night because his hairdresser didn't show up,'" says Foster, who felt ill at the thought of telling the crowd waiting outside the club that the show was off. A friend running a club in Boston told him that the jazzman's fan's were used to their hero's fits of pique and that they wouldn't cause any trouble. "There wasn't one boo," Foster says. "They just all turned around quietly and started walking to their cars, got in their cars, and they drove away. I was in shock. I couldn't believe it." " The whole article is here, with a few pictures: http://www.courant.com/entertainment/music/hc-spotlede0812.artaug12,0,7942784.story There's a good short story about Tom Waits (he played for only 12 people the first night and a cat jumped on his piano and he said `Man, the vibe, the cat - everything was just great.'") and one about The Police before they hit the big-time -- they charged all the people just a dollar just to see 'em! And this is pretty funny, the manager saying: `Look, what's your name? Sting? Sting, look, we're all going to watch your band, but it's a tie game; it's the World Series. Wait until 10 o'clock, and then go on." (LOL....WWVD?) This was a swinging hot spot where there was often a local band playing (Locals were up kicking and shaking on the floor -- and boy, did that old floor shake!) until 1982 when it burned down. Bourbon laughter ghosts history falls To parking lots and shopping malls Yes, that paradise is now a paved parking lot and Eastbrook Mall. I can't drive by there without getting such a strong impressions of its hey day, good old Shaboo, where I saw: - -- Arlo Guthrie - -- Orleans - -- Papa John Creach (indescribably awesome) - -- David Bromberg - -- New Riders of the Purple Sage - -- Bonnie Raitt (she came over to our table and threw back some shots and smoked out of our pipe, which was forever-after called the "Bonnie Raitt pipe.") When our favorite CT band, Eight to the Bar, got their first gig there in March 1978, they thought they had died and gone to Carnegie Hall! There were lots more, of course. I well up with affection thinking back down the roads to then. It was a sad night when that place burned down to the ground. We drove right past that tragedy, knowing full well what we got, before it was gone. Love, Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ Learn.Laugh.Share. I have to read the lyrics again and above all, have to hear them with music and sung by Joni to be able to "lay down an impression" in a more serious way but even at this stage I think it's safe to say that this is a major work!
