Those who understand Spanish can read El Pais's review at the link at end. Those who don't will have to put up with my translation. Before the translation I'll just say that the title of the review was 'Simply brillant', and I feel sure that the people present on the 25th of July would all agree. The band (Wayne on tenor and soprano sax, John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums and Danilo Perez on piano) strolled on, warmed up and tuned up and little by little the audience realised that the first number had begun. It went on for more than 40 (50?) minutes, what seemed to be a continuous stream of improvisation, issuing from all the players, not just the sax and piano. No title was given for this number, nor the second and final one, nor for the encore. The review gave no titles either so I can't help you there. No 'hellos' or 'thank yous' either, just bows and smiles when it was all over. It was one of the finest concerts I've ever seen. I was sitting in the front row, slightly left of centre so I was perfectly positioned about 10 feet from WS, who frequently leaned into the well of Perez's piano to catch his breath after some of his more taxing interventions. Blade was explosive, snapping three drumsticks on what seemed a very small, almost child-size, drum kit. It certainly produced a full sound. John Paticucci plucked and bowed his bass and didn't miss a note the whole night. Perez enjoyed himself a lot and those of us who heard his last LP were not disappointed, although he didn't get any extended solos. Shorter played mostly tenor but picked up the soprano during all three numbers. Here are some extracts from the review, by Miquel Jurado, translation mine. ..WS's quartet has been playing together almost without interruption for 7 years now, a record when most groups in the jazz field get together for a tour or a new record and then disappear the next day. WS, in contrast, has managed to bring together some high-voltage musicians around his music. What started out as an ephemeral adventure has become, thanks to that loyalty, one of the most solid groups in the history of contemporary jazz. ..the quartet again demonstrated its undisputable class with a concert which was astonishing due both to the quantity of music and ideas flowing across the stage and, at the same time, to one of the most beautiful 'jazz' concerts (to give it that name) heard in Catalonia in many years. The Wayne Shorter Quartet was simply brilliant. The music of this young sax player of 73 years of age is passionate, a journey to the deepest wells of human sensitivity. It's jazz, of course, but it also owes much to contemporary and classical music (if these are not, in the end, the same thing). It is a changing music which in every moment plays with the sensations, both of the players and the audience, and passes from tension to effervescence in an astonishingly natural way. Music which traps you from the first notes and nails you to your seat, producing an excitement which is difficult to explain in words. The group presents the music in a seamless way, the different threads flow from one to another, without any need for resolution or problems of continuity, forming a unique unit. In fact, it's a single item that is born, grows, develops and finds its logical ending before our eyes with a breathtaking naturalness. The themes evolved according to the mood of the musicians and the interplay between them. Only at one moment, more than one hour into the concert, did the applause of the audience, unable to contain themselves any longer, break this coherent continuity for some moments. Brian Blade was explosive from beginning to end and projected the group time and again into unsuspected landscapes. Danilo Perez took these vibrations and solidified them with a light, acrobatic, brave and adventurous touch over the unalterable bass of the superb John Patutucci. And controlling everything, the great Wayne Shorter, who was profound and suggestive with the tenor and much more sharp and cutting with the soprano. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 11:34:26 EDT From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Re: A Case of You ~ who is she? When I listen to this verse at different times, I see two different imageries in my mind... one as the woman is Joni herself who has kissed him and also sings. Maybe she met the woman in the mirror. The other way is similar to what is in For the Roses: I get these notes On butterflies and lilac sprays From girls who just have to tell me They saw you somewhere When I get the second imagery, of some other woman, I feel a jealousy for Joni. The woman is too close to him if she has a mouth like his and knows his life. I picture Graham's mouth with his mustache and can't imagine it being for anybody else but Joni. Of course, I know that isn't the way it turned out though. Unless, of course, she's thinking of changing the title to 'Shine Shine'--which might not be a bad idea considering how many other SHINE's are listed on Amazon in music: Mary Black (in 1997), Cyndi Lauper (2002), Bond (2002), Daniel Lanois (2003), Mitch Malloy (2003), Meredith Brooks (2004), Theresa Andersson (2004), Trey Anastasio (2005), Boney James (2006), The Skies of America (2006) just to name a few. Personally, I preferred the 'IF' title myself (which was mentioned when the project was first proposed). But then, what do "I" know anyway. Oh well. When it comes to Joni, I'll take what I can get. ;-) XXXOOO, Billy NP: 'The Is Is' (2007) Brand new 5-song EP by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs ======================================== Monika Motitan@aol.com wrote: >>> Hey thanks for the link! (not to seem too critical) I'm not > sure the extra 'Shine' > was necessary in the upper left hand corner. It's thrilling seeing a new Joni cover no matter what it looks like! Looking closely... this one's really odd. Maybe it's a draft version. I'm thinking the big blue rectangle and repeating names isn't needed. Its heavy look is jarring combined with the light-on-their-feet dancers. And it makes me think all the dancers have naked bottoms. Maybe the blue is just a separate and temporary strip of paper designed to catch buyers' eyes. But then I look again and the little legs at the bottom don't match the dancers at the top, so it looks like two different photos and the blue rectangle hides the connection. The part I love is the upper left corner above the blue so my redo is to take all the figures out of that little square except for that stunning dancer stretching toward the moon. I love the way the word shine is balanced between his fingertips. Keep the moon glow in and lose the bit of solid blue that would be at the bottom. Looking at it that way makes me think of the Blue cover, but instead of looking down and inward, there's now some optimism. Go Joni go! The writer rambled but in distilled form I think he's talking about the U.S. myth of the individual. That cowboy/Rambo/"sheriff all alone and able to hold off the angry mob"/"pull yourselves up by the bootstraps"/"I did it MY way" is a big part of American culture. We're urged to go it alone, which of course leads to disastrous consequences such as Iraq if it's not tempered with some maturity and wisdom. All myths are dangerous if they're taken too seriously. For a clue to just how important the U.S. myth of the individual is look at Sicko and the propaganda about the dangers of universal health care used to scare Americans. Oh, no, such health care might lead us all to be robots! So the writer's "through being cool" to me is his way of saying "don't think you have to go it all alone" even if you are American and even though the lone individual is so highly prized here. I'm learning no one anywhere accomplishes anything all by themselves (but Americans don't really think that). And hey, Lori, come back when it's good for you. I'm going to miss the quirky thought-provoking comments you add here. Debra Shea ____________________________________________________________________________________ Got a little couch potato? Only issue for me in the US is that it's so expensive since I'm self-employed. And even though I'm paying big premiums every single month I have a feeling that if something goes wrong, I won't REALLY have coverage. I'm curious, too, about how people in other countries feel about their health care. My guess is it's so taken for granted there's not much feeling about it at all. The idea of waiting to see a specialist doesn't bother me. People here also have to do that unless it's an emergency. I went to see Sicko with my 80-year old Dad who was so fired up by the documentary he's planning to write to our Senators and tell them the movie needs to be shown to the entire Congress. He envisions movie-time in the capitol building! He's unusually lucky because the employer he worked at for decades is actually keeping its promise to their employees (at least the ones my Dad's age) and he's covered without any problems or having to pay anything. My Mom, with her huge medical bills, was covered by his insurance also. So it's not that he's personally concerned about insurance, and until little Bush came along, was a life-long Republican, and even with all that, he was impressed with Michael Moore's movie.
