Strange since this is one of the few songs I can't relate to and so it doesn't mean much to me. I like the way Joni sings it though. Now I know people on this list are a fountain of interpretations so I would love for anybody to let me know their take on this song. I realize it's about one of the many womanizers that seem to have crossed Joni's path but is there anything more to it? Reading your post (copied below), here in a strangely sunny England... I wondered if you were hinting about an inner circle on the list? Is that where the coolest people hang out? What is the website address, or are you on the outside too?........ That has been one of the topics at Fests.... sneakily diguised as a book swap, "how do we find out who is "in" and Cool, and who is not".... I have yet to learn the secret Joni handshake, get "that" tatoo and learn the special foot movements to "the secret dance". I am not sure what head gear I should ever wear as that will mark me as "not quite fitting in"... do you think it was the right thing to do, to cut off my middle toe on my left foot, like we thought? Did the "welcome circle" and complicated hand movements to that tune at Fest 2003, all sign us in unwittingly? I have never had a strange package of my badges and "memoranda of association" arrive at my door, and I have not changed address..... I am now wondering whether there is a mystical number I should know, and if actually Joni's early works were full of codes and clues I have been really too thick in the head to unravel... I have specifically kept all these feelings to myself and I would appreciate it if you kept these strange feelings of my paranoia from the "BIG LIST"............ I had no idea these conditions existed there right now. My heart cries out for humanity and for the suffering that is going on. I do not wish to see anyone suffer. We make war with each other and stave at each other with our weapons in defiance, but in the end, we all suffer and die just the same. In the end, all differences are put aside when the body suffers. I hear they are finally sending UN Peacekeepers to Darfur to stave off the suffering and bloodshed there as well. In the end, life in death is something we all have in common. They have a way of working all of our petty differences out. I hope and pray that power is able to be given back to the people of Baghdad, that stability and help will finally come to Darfur, and that the cries of those suffering can be heard by someone, somewhere. Sherelle just said she did not know about it, so at least I have reached one person. In my little corner of the world, I have not seen much, except for on the internet. CNN is all about the horrible bridge collapse. My local paper had a little Reuters article today that said the temperature was 122. 122!!!! People can you feel it? "Muna Joseph, a middle-aged woman who lives near Baghdad's central Karrada district yesterday, said she had not had water for three days. "Water is one of our simplest rights but always there is a water crisis. We want to live a normal life, we are human." " We are supposed to be bringing them democracy (ha) and we can't even let them have water. And imagine the sanitation problems....in that heat.... The Hartford Courant had nothing today on the misery. But it did have some words from one of my favorite CT Congressmen, John Larson, commenting on why things are moving so slowly in Washington: "There's a whole strata of politics -- the blogs, YouTube and so on -- where people are talking to one another. Things move quickly there. People want things done fast." "Washington is still working with largely 18th-century rules." We have to demand action and keep the pressure on. If the internet is the place to do it, well then that's where we'll be. L: and yet just about all of us (myself included) DO stand >it, every single day, as we drive our cars and drink our clean water and >take at least one shower or bath just about every day. P: I don't stand for it. Just because I drink clean water and take a shower everyday doesn't mean I stand for it. I drive my car, always filled with people, to peace vigils and rallies and demonstrations. I go to meetings, put up posters, write to my congresspeople, talk it up (you would be amazed at the conversations that spring up just by wearing a peace button everyday), send up prayers, and wage peace every day. Ineffective, perhaps, but never a day goes by that I don't take a stand. "We" aren't the ones >who can't stand it for one more day or seventeen more months. It's those >who are THERE fighting (for whatever reasons they fight) who can't stand >it. Those poor kids are so busy fighting and getting blown up that they cannot protest. Plus, they are not allowed to. They are doing their jobs. And their poor parents are waving the flag in their honor. Of course they are! And I totally understand that. Every day I drive by a hand-painted sign that says: "Sleep Well, America. Our Marine Has Your Back." It breaks my heart every time. I pray for that Marine, and I pray for his famly, and for all the families of the world. > >The rest is all just words. Heartfelt they certainly are, but they're only >words. Sigh. I know, Lori. Well here's some trivial Joni-ness for the weekend's sake. Be warned: this post does not have the meaning of life in it nor does it have any hidden meaning. This is light and fun and showin' Joni all around! Anyway, last night I met up with some friends at a restaurant/bar for a few drinks. We were outside sitting at a table on the restaurant's patio (it was a beautiful, warm summer night and some of my friends do smoke). And of course, they have music playing there. However, the music outside was very faint. Now everybody's talking to everybody else (including someone to me) and guess what comes on? Joni! I heard the opening chords to Free Man In Paris. Even though I was in the middle of a conversation I yelled out, "this is a great song!" One of the girls noticed my enthusiasm and suggested we sit inside the restaurant to listen. Indeed we did! Although, I doubt this girl was a Joni fan. She was a friend of my friend's so this was the first time I ever even met her. I didn't even bother to ask her if she liked Joni although I did tell her that this was a Joni Mitchell song. That went pretty much unnoticed as this girl was kind of drunk by then. Either way, it was still so much fun to hear some Joni and someone else express drunken, fleeting interest in all this! - -Monika, seeing the Simpsons movie today ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2007 18:50:29 +0200 From: "Oddmund Kaarevik" Subject: Re: joni & cohen Well, Emiliano, your answer provided me with a lot more of light than darkness (then I see a darkness, and then I see a darkness) Thanks for correcting my misunterstanding with Cohens text. I think maybe I4ve gotten further confused trough Cohens version he wrote to Jennifer Warnes and of norwegian singer Kari Bremnes nowefuan version translated by poet Haavard Rem (Look out for the name, soon appearing in Bob4s covers compilations) I remeber I read somewhere that Cohen had rewrote the song for J.Warnes, and I remeber reflecting over it some years ago and got very confused of what sexes/sexualities was invloved in it. Therefore your reference to Cohens own words spread some light on it. Because he seems to be kind of confused himself. Oh that dear Old Cohen, I think it4s so funny that he doesn4t really remeber if the song is about himself or some third part. For an outsider I percieve Cohen to have been a person very much alive and living in the present. I watched an interview with him quite recently - - and what stroke me was that he appeared so warm - and reconciled with his past, even with his former manager who stole his money. He didn4t seem bitter at all. Maybe it4s this Budhism thing that is working I don4t know. I find hime very fascinating - and I can kind of forgive his flirting tone withe the young and pretty norwegian interviewer. Hmm - Cohen and joni would be two persons I4d really like to meet - but I4m afraid I would be so terrified meeting them that I wouldn4t be able to say a thing. Well, bless them. The main talent behind it is Neil Finn who is such a genius. See what you think. - -Monika, seeing the Simpsons movie today ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2007 12:30:36 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: forest fires njc Yup, we've got a big one here too burning up the backcountry since july 4- yesterday the eastern sky was black as night, last night the eastern ridge was in flames & some of the mountain communities were evacuated. >Bonneville Bruce Due to the forest fires exploding around the State of Idaho and the larger region of the Intermountain West, there is a red alert in the air quality index. This means stay indoors and do next to nothing, and try not to breath too much. It does make for very spectacular sun/ moon sets and rises. The sun/moon runs red as blood and all that dragon-flying-over-the-sun mythology is easily understood in scenes like we have been experiencing for the last few weeks. This July in Idaho we experienced the all-time record for highest average temperature (High + low/2 averaged for 31 days) of 84 deg. F. It was about when they made a hit in the USA, and where you can get the best hot-dogs in the country. I happen to like hot-dogs.......yeah I know a lot of them are made from pig lips....etc..., but I still love them. Even Bob M. named his son after a famous hot-dog. (Hi Nathan) :) Anyway, one part made me think of Joni. In Macon, Georgia where the Georgia Music Hall of Fame is located, (Hi Victor) Nu-Way Wieners is a landmark from 1916, and located on "COTTON AVENUE." They have a secret recipe and the narrator goes on to say it's a "DOG EAT DOG" world. LOL I wonder if Joni's been there.
