Interesting article. The initial description of what it is to be a mate reminds me of the ideal of what it is to be family. Though we don't use the word "mate," it could be said matehood is brotherhood and sisterhood in the US. I don't think it is fair to say the mate-type of relationship isn't found in the US. I've seen it in US ethnic communities as well as in more diverse communities of people united in friendship. We've got matehood on the JMDL in a very unique and strong way in my opinion. I don't know about you, but I didn't go looking for an alternative Joni Mitchell community to fill a lack of fitting in in other realms. I thought it might be fun to subscribe to a Joni Mitchell discussion list and hear what others who like Joni think. It has been so much fun, and I've got good mates here as icing on the cake. The thrust of the article in my opinion is revealed in the first sentence of the last paragraph, "We live in an advertising culture where we are constantly told that the only thing that stands between our current state and wholeness is a particular commodity." This article isn't the first attempt at an explanation of our consumeristic society. But, why look for a negative basis behind our consumerism? Maybe we are into consumption because things are fun to have and available here, not that we all buy out of personal insecurity. I wonder what the author would think of our Joni community? Instead of trying to out buy each other with Joni stuff to boost our own egos and feel like we fit in or are better than others, we give give give to each other. We want each other to have Joni stuff because we find joy in it ourselves. The last raffle at the Jonifest was a good example of this. It was almost ridiculous how much stuff was donated. Oh, I didn't mean to send this thread in such a direction, but since you brought it up ... I can say unequivocally that is not true. Even within this JMDL community, there are people who have a need to be cool -- or at least they're perceived that way. Maybe that perception is the problem of the perceivers (or "those who would be picked last"), but it exists nonetheless. No need to go into specifics, but I've personally felt and have been told by others about the "cool" vs. "uncool" here from time to time. My best guess is that it came from the old, American (?) kids "board-game" (think 'Monopoly'), which is also called 'Husker Du' and remains quite popular. Anyone know for certain? I believe that all three band members (Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton) were born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. (USA), but perhaps one of them actually had roots in Norway. I really have no idea. Formed in the late 1970's/early 1980's, they were an important--and highly influential--part of the hardcore/indie scene until they disbanded in 1987 at the very height of their career (due to the obligatory "personal and artistic differences"). Rumors persist that Hart had an increasing problem with drugs. Alternating singers Mould (on guitar) and Hart (on drums) were the main songwriters, while Norton mostly just played bass. I know people have the right to free speech and all that and that the majority on this list, at least those who say anything on the list, are American, but, as a non-American, I get pretty tired of hearing about politics, especially American politics, so often. When I think about it, I am pretty much bored with any kind of political discussion though, and I think that it's pointless trying to win anyone over to your side, and yet, people can go on and on, ranting about this stuff. Because I am bored with it doesn't mean that I'm apathetic. I have my beliefs and don't need to be battered over the head with people's opinions, which are, after all, merely opinions, but often expressed as holy writ. And I don't care whether these opinions are similar to mine or completely the opposite. I hate talking about that stuff and wouldn't inflict my opinions, at least not at any great length, on anyone else. And yet, here I am, going on at length about it, feeling irritated that I've allowed myself to become irritated by it, even though I believe that people have the right to free speech and that, as long as no one is actually attacking anyone else, it's fine, and I can delete freely (and have been doing a lot of that.) What a terrible sentence that was. I have NO idea who VICK is and don't care, although I thought at first that someone was attacking YOU, Victor, but doing a very bad job of spelling your name. I'm probably just a grouchy old fart, but, in the spirit of free speech, I guess there are a lot of things that get on my nerves but there's no point in making a list of them, because that's just me. I thought Muller's joke about cockfighting at Jonifest was pretty damn funny though. We can't be serious all the time, otherwise we'd probably explode, and we need to save that for the release of JONI'S NEW ALBUM and HERBIE'S NEW ALBUM WITH JONI ON IT ALL ON THE SAME DAY!!! I'd shriek, but I've got bronchitis and no voice or lungpower. My daemon (why is it daemon with ae and how is that different from demon with only an e and yet pronounced the same way?) is... A BLACK CROW named Aesop. The tiresome website (pretty but I hate flash because it takes too long to download) timed out on me before I had a chance to save it. I'm modest (yeah right), outgoing (as if), solitary (that's true) and some more stuff. I guess I'll have to do it again. There are times I'd like to go Joni-only but there are some conversations I really enjoy even if I don't join in. I guess if other people's topics aren't my cuppa tea, I should start up my own topic, but I'm too grouchy and old and detached right now to think of anything. Bobble-head dolls scare the crap out of me. Just because people don't get one another doesn't mean either should feel they have to go away, but that's a personal choice in any case. I don't see anything wrong with discussing Hitler here. It's not as if anyone is glorifying him or stirring up a Nazi comeback. Far from it. It's not meant to be offensive or anything of that nature. It is simply a discussion which has pretty much ended itself as all discussions do eventually. I mean there are many topics that are mentioned on the list. Not every one is to my liking or of interest to me but this list is not designed to appeal specifically to anyone individually. As a group, it appeals to Joni fans but since there is that nifty "NJC" and such a variety of people signed up to the list, many different topics are presented. Now of course if there was NO JONI CONTENT most of the time or God forbid all of the time, I for one would unsubscribe from the list. I like to talk and read Joni first. Everything else comes second and third and fourth....but those are interesting sometimes as well. I like to know what people think about and their opinions in general. - -Monika, likes the Joni talk the most but can dabble in some other topics...refrain from some...and delete some... ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2007 19:03:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Random Joni thoughts...(kind of long) That had me scratching my head too, Monika - I certainly don't know why it was totally skipped over but it's certainly conspicuous in its absence, isn't it? If you were to say, for example, that Joni's signing up with Starbucks is something that Hitler might do, it might be OK, because Joni herself isn't participating in the argument. But if someone were to then respond saying, "Are you comparing Joni to Hitler? Oh my god, you, you, you... Hitler, you!" then that would count as a personal attack and the thread would be over. Should be over. But probably wouldn't be. So, I wonder... is this thread over? I bet not. Didn't it first air on PBS before being released? Now when it aired on PBS, I read that some of the footage was considerably absent in the release. I read that there was some early footage of Joni smoking a joint with the boys (who I take to be CSN or CSNY), as well as scenes of Joni and Graham Nash riding in a car, etc etc (which I can understand why those would be edited out). Of course I read there was quite a bit added to what was released--more of Joni's painting, more later concert performances, etc. Can anyone verify if what I read is indeed the case? - -Monika ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2007 19:15:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Here's something that everyone can laugh at Don't worry, this will never make a Covers Volume.
