It would be so nice if everyone could either play his CD if you have it or go to the links provided by Paz to listen to what a tremendous musician he was. I don't think I ever had the pleasure of meeting him but I have had a chance to listen to his music and see footage of him performing live with Arlo Guthrie's tour (thanks Paz). Finally home and reading a few digests, so much to digest. Our first stop was Cincinnati where we jammed in Bree's nephew Scott's basement. Scott has a kick ass drum set I had seen in a photo and finally experienced in person. It rocked the house!!! He's a sound set up man for the rich and famous and set up the sound on his system for my son's friend who plays electric guitar like the rich and famous. Awesome sound once things got going! The best part of Cincinnat was I saw Bree!!!! I hadn't in several years. She's in Cincinnati taking care of her sister who is very very sick. Prayers... I got a big hug from her!!! The warmest!!! My Hillary Clinton for President shirt didn't scare her away! The kids loved Cincinnati even though they got kicked out of Jungle Jim's food market for having too much fun and I got harassed by the cashier who asked me, "why do you have that on?" in reference to my Hillary t-shirt. I tried to see Monika when we passed by Cleveland but kept getting a busy signal on the tele. There could have been a great exchange of guitar electricity. Next time I hope... New York was our next stop where we stayed with Marianne's sister, Annette, for several days and then with Marianne. While we were with Nettie, we ventured even further north to Toronto where saw Catherine!!! It was so good to see her!!!!!! She and her son met us at a pizza restaurant where I had the best veggie pizza ever! Catherine looked so beautiful and her son Matthew is so cute! We had a great time. My oldest son and his friend JD went to see The White Stripes in concert in the arena in Toronto. After Toronto, we went to Niagara Falls. The day was hot and the shower we got on the Maids of the Mist boat near the falls was so refreshing. Our next stop was Marianne's. I had shared my Joni tribute album with her and she let me hear her cover instrumental of California. Joni. We basically took over Marianne's house and yard. She was so accomodating and good to us. We set up 2 tents, all kinds of amplifiers, electric drums, and guitars. The older kids and our chihuahua dog stayed in the tents. They told stories of hearing all kinds of weird animal noises during the night. One night they came running in the house to get us to hear a weird creature that sounded like a lady yelling "stop!!" We walked down the totally dark road closer to the strange animal. Marianne thought it sounded beautiful, but I kept my hand on my revolver the whole time. One of my sons said it might be a cougar so we should take off all of our clothes and run... he'd heard that on the discovery channel. It was all back to nature with Marianne. It didn't seem like 5 days because it went by so fast. What did we do? We stayed up late and slept in. We went to hear her cousin's band perform for the first time. We sat out at her picnic table and sang and talked. Climbed trees. Hung a couple of clothes lines, set up her hammock, painted shelves for her bathroom, walked the railroad track near her house, dug up antique bottles, stacked firewood, went to a cool flea market, swam in a stream at a park that had a series of waterfalls and cool rock formations. The last day, we took a risky hike to the river that runs by her house... didn't fall in but got pretty muddy. Found some cool mussels on a small rocky island. Walked through more poison ivy than I'd seen in my life. Later that night we made a bonfire and dried our shoes on stakes put up by the fire. It was a spiritual experience; we chanted the mantra "Oh shoe ohhhh!" Michigan was our next stop. We cut across Canada and stayed a night in Port Huron. Then we went to Detroit where we found Gary!!! We traveled with a Garmin, GPS, that took us right to his front door. When I saw him, I fel t like I've known him all my life. Everything about him is beautiful! The first thing Gary did was offer us some Vernors ginger ale to drink. Something about drinking Vernors in Detroit... it was just so perfect! Joni was playing on Gary's TV, a cool video of her dancing in her kitchen with her cat. I was really digging it and then he said... we are watching your copy of this. My joy hit the ceiling when he said that! He showed us clips in movies where there were Joni and Laura Nyro references. He showed us a whole room full of PEZ dispensers. He was so thoughtful and also gave me 2 CD's of Laura Nyro and one of Joni. Stuff I hadn't heard before. "Dr. Junk the Dentist Man, fills your teeth with what he can." Made our next drive to Chicago so pleasant! Chicago was our last stop. I have family there... no more Guzzi though. There's a new piece of art called "The Bean" in the Millennium park in the city. See it if you ever get the chance. It is as shiney as a mirror, reflects the city in a distortedly interesting way. My rel's enjoyed hearing the Joni and Laura Nyro CDs. We played lots of music for them. It was a rolling Jonifest of a sort. More than I've mentioned here. Until the next Full Moon... I started with Blue - and went backwards and then onward! Joni has been a most important part of my life. The earliest people I recall responding to my earliest posts are of course Bob Muller and Kerry and Lori and Catherine and Mark in Seattle - you know there may be more ... Less than two years after I lost my lover, I came here looking for any reason to resume and I found this family. I went to my first Jonifest in 2001. Since then I have met love again and brought my partner Meg to Jonifest 2004. This place is important to me and will always be ... and I have made friends I know I will know for the rest of my life. We seriously have made a what was a virtual community into a real community. I have met probably over a hundred Joniphiles in person and shared music and singing ... and of course laughing and crying (ya know it's the same release) with many of them. I love seeing new people take their place in the spotlight and post and share ... every once in awhile it brings me out to reiterate my beginnings here and share an old memory again. Why members that were so close at one point that they actually appeared on Joni-related tapings, are no longer here, I just can't understand. Why would the old listers even leave? I think the photos on Chris Marshall's website www.hatstand.org tell an eloquent story but I have to say that it was an amazing time with some wonderful and special moments. For my kids and Frank it was their first FEST and if it their last that is no comment on the event. There is a real quilt of memories that do bear relating at some point. Fest fitted into the middle of a two week break having stayed in a friends flat in Gruissan beforehand and planning to go to see friends near Perpignan after. The Corbierers is a wonderful part of France ( a country I love dearly and have travelled extensively in). It consists of gorges and rivers and dry high valleys with huge expanses of scrubby bush land. If you have seen Manon Des Sources or Jean De Florette the landscape is similar to that, but not as mountainous. Finding the fest site was like discovering Eden. Set way down the side of a cliff face, Jean Yves home is hidden totally from view. A track opens out onto a small area where you can just turn round a camper van or car. there is a mill set into the cliff face and a stream that runs behind it to a crisply cold pool. When I heard there was a swimming pool there I had not expected it to be exactly that.. a pool you can swim in. Freezing cold water dripping down a mossy piece of rock and flowing out the other side to trickle on down the valley.I preferred it to the alternative and once you got used to the cold then it was wonderful to go and dip every morning. From the car there were some steps down onto a wide flat area that was the top of a terrace. A lovely wooden house was there and tables and chairs were set out under the plum and mulberry trees. Further along the track it opened out into a wide space with a small marquee with lots of musical gear there, and a seating area with a large tarpaulin over it. this was the performance space. Frank and I had to pitch the tent on a small space which gave us about 2 foot of walking space before a drop of about 15 feet to the next level of the terrace. the views from the place were exquisite across a broad valley to a ridge of hills in the distance topped with a large wind farm. This truly was a "back to the garden" experience and it was amazing to see so many familiar faces again. Cat McKay, Bob Muller, Chris Marshall, Martin Giles Strings, Anita and Steph, Jean Van Tiel, Lieve, Claudia, Ashes, and loads of people who I had spoken with or e-mailed, Adriano Lucatello (with his family), Emilliano, Laurent, Garrett, Jaimie Zoob, and Randall Williams plus several other people whose names I cannot remember instantly. All together there were about 20 of us I suppose and the feeling was so different to the US Fests. Very very relaxed, no performance schedule as such, very go with the flow and meal times were literally a moveable feast!! (with a lot of fennel!). Things just happened and we went with them.. like the three hour sing a line song tag, drinking under the trees, swimming in the gorge, hanging out around the tables. It was really chilled and so many ..so many conversations taking place about soooo many things.the performances were always good and very entertaining.. I will remember not to do a set whilst drunk... never again.. not good... forgot my songs and I was off key... but what the heck... I loved it that Bob M "got" the whole experience .. it is so NOT American....and it was about so many other things but with Joni at the core.. Some wonderful renditions of her songs and so much laughter. Sam, my son, gave a his first ever performance and did Allelulia and it was a lovely moment to see that his fathers genes had flown into him on that score. It was all lovely and we were sad to leave... Jerry, and Marion, go to Chris's site for the photos, it will give you a real feel for the whole place and what other people did. Go to the site, look at the first page and in the blurb there is a link to Joni related things. There are the photos in French Fest 2005 and see what you missed. Garrett and I have been trying to put together something in the UK for August 2008. www.holycombe.com for the venue. But there is a lot hanging in the balance and I do not have the spare money for the deposit at the moment. If people would like to look and get back to me. it would be the last weekend in August 2008 from the Thursday night to the Monday Morning.. I cannot remember the dates exactly, but have a look. Costs would be around #250 ish but that is not certain... Anyway I have to go as Frank and I are off to dinner at some friends and we need to go. The line also echoes LOTC "tiny hammers hurled at bevelled mirrors and empty halls". Just for the record, I thought that maybe Joni was comparing herself to the rich young man when she says, ~I guess I seem ungrateful With my teeth sunk in the hand (whoa, mighty graphic words there...that's just Joni) That brings me things I really just can't give up yet~ Then, I thought she put herself in Jesus' time and place, like she did in the Passion Play, comparing herself to Zacchaeus, who climbed up the sycamore to get a look at Jesus passing by. Yet Kevin, your interpretation complements the theme of the song better, so now I understand. As Phyliss pointed out (hi, Phyliss! nice to see you again!), sometimes life just gets in the way. This list can consume a lot of time, and many of us have had significant others who've objected to the time we've devoted to corresponding, attending fests, jetting off in hopes of meeting Joni, maintaining portions of the websites, etc. No complaints from me, although I have certainly been one of those whose partner has objected at times to my involvement in the "Joni fan club!" : ) So sometimes people take a break, and other times they leave altogether. Usually those who leave return, even if just briefly, because we're all so charming that they miss us! And there have been issues over the years ... usually the result of a political debate that got out of hand, although there have also been other instances of "sour grapes." There have even been a few members who've been shown the virtual door, but it takes quite a bit for that to happen. It's just the normal wax and wane of a very big family, I think. We're all very lucky to have this place, though, and extremely fortunate to enjoy the solid community that's come of it. I'm always glad when new people join, even though a lot of us "old timers" aren't as quick anymore to answer the questions that have been answered many times over the years. That said, all newcomers should KEEP ASKING them! Glad you're all here, glad I'm still here too ... You know what? You and I share the same story, as far as discovering Joni. But the first time I heard Joni's song was when I was on a carousel at the '68 World's Fair, "Hemisfare." They were playing, 'Both Sides Now'. by Judy Collins. I got the album and saw the Joni Mitchell name as having written the song, and the rest is the same as your history. You wrote your version of experiences so pretty. And guess what else? I'm less than a breath away from turning 50, in just a few days. (yikes!) My sisters and I are going to celebrate it at my favorite Persian restaurant (yippee!) I got that sign up letter for AARP, too. I need to read the letter to find out what it's all about. My mother told me everyone gets it when they turn 50. Does that make us senior citizens? Maybe we can use it for senior citizen discounts. Any discounts are fine by me because President Dum-Dum and his bright ideas have hurt the economy with his bloody war and free for all monies for the richest of the rich good ol' greed boys like him. I do hope to meet you, Susan and Everyone, someday soon. I know we'll get along once I overcome my shyness and let myself be me. Love, Jeannie Bob, let me take your place as hillbilly, okay? Love to all my old friends and the new ones I still have yet to meet in person! Peace, Susan jeannie wrote: The warmth expressed towards Wally is making me cry, as some sort of bitter-sweet release. Why members that were so close at one point that they actually appeared on Joni-related tapings, are no longer here, I just can't understand. Why would the old listers even leave? Were there certain issues or problems? Well, it's cool and kind that Wally lives on within y'all in such sweet warmth.
