I think he's from Virginia (like my friend Sarah) so maybe Bob Muller or someone in that area may know something. On the train to Madrid I was reading Patrick Humphries' biography of Nick Drake (Hi again Victor). Anyone here read it and/or have anything to say about it? I also picked up 'Pink Moon' a week or so ago and was less than overwhelmed although I'll give it more time to grow. The book goes a long way to explaining why the album came out as it did, but...twenty-eight minutes is a very short CD. While in the same bookshop/record shop I picked up a Trilogy of the Pogues early albums and was surprised to learn that 'Thousands are Sailing', a wonderful track for all people of Irish extraction (Hi Kakki), was not written by Shane MacGowan, as I had thought, but by Philip Chevron. Humphries' biography of Drake mentions that MacGowan, far from the image of the working-class waif forced to give handjobs down the 'dilly to pay for the Tuinol, was in fact educated at Westminster public school (Public in the British sense, i.e. elite, private, expensive). Bejaysus, whatever next. Live and learn. Other former students at Westminster are Martin Amis, Helena Bonham-Carter and A.A. Milne, who wrote Winnie the Pooh, which became the source of inspiration for the Kenny Loggins CD mentioned earlier. I have snagged the Jason Isbell, and I agree with your assessment. As for DBT gig, sorry to be a douchebag but as you know it comes so easily for me. The funny thing was when I went on the DBT website the day after the show, I was reading their tour schedule and the Asheville show was SUPPOSED to be an all-acoustic "Dirt Underneath" show, but they had a note: "This MIGHT turn into a rock show". Yeah, it sorta did. I have to tell you about the second encore...firstly, a fair number of people had left - eith er they thought the show was over or it was too late for them - - I knew there was more coming - the band comes back out, one of the roadies is playing Patterson's guitar, he's smashed and launches into a raucus medley of "Buttholeville" and Springsteen's "State Trooper". The others in the band were working hard to follow him, looking at each other for cues, Hood is on his hands & knees shouting "MISTER STATE TROOPER.............PLEASE DON'T STOP ME"...what a great rock and roll moment. And of course to share it my son made it even better. Jason Isbell will be coming around here shortly so I may have to go check that one out. I'm anxious to hear about the Ryan show...I didn't like "Easy Tiger" AT ALL but it is getting good reviews. Thanks for checking in. He organized a COW (CT Opposes War) mtg. on campus, and I run into him at rallies and stuff, where we always wave and smile. (npimh: "I see him in cafes....") I was pulling into a paved paradise and saw him. He waved and smiled and came over and said: "Hey! How are ya? Hey, I like your bumper stickers!'' ("War is not the answer" and "Endless War" -- with the "less" crossed out and it says "this" over it). We laughed and toasted to our anti-war activities and I pointed to my hatch back and said, "yeah, i have signs, too, wanna have a demonstration?" (I'm racing so forgive all errors please.) We went on to talk for over half an hour in the middle of the parking lot, exchanging ideas and energy and enthusiasm. Input, output: ELECTRICITY!!! He just came back from a youth conference in SF sponsored by the World Can't Wait Foundation. He was chock full of ideas for getting this campus moving. We agreed on so many things....how we just can't wait for Sept. 15th or the end of Bush's term....too many people are dying to wait. It was a wonderful conversation....our lights just got brighter and brighter as we fed off of each other. He's going to be in charge of the young people, and I'm supposed to fiddle and drum up old people....LOL! Maybe get some teach-ins going and stuff.... Have you heard about http://www.worldcantwait.net/ Part of the Bill Moyer's video is here, too. It seems to be a serious site. Starting Friday, July 27th, people are going to start wearing orange stuff. If you see people standing on a noisy corner waiting for the walking green wearing ORANGE, you'll know why. Join us! Jason gave me one of his orange bandanas from the conference. I treasure this! It says: DRIVE OUT THE BUSH Regime. www.worldcantwait.org" He says you can buy them on the website but that they are expensivito (5 bucks). Any old orange will do. Orange you with us? Apples and oranges are fine together! Hillbillys welcome, too! LOL.... "Declare Yourself: The urgent color of orange - the color that has been assigned to those detained and tortured with no due process - must become the color of a gathering sentiment to end all this. This spreading of orange is part of seizing the moral high ground and showing our collective determination to bring these crimes to a halt NOW by Driving Out the Bush Regime. A groundswell of orange, assisted and amplified by the voices of prominent people and musicians wearing and promoting orange on TV, radio, and on stage at concerts can break people out of this conundrum where millions are just furious but still paralyzed by the paralysis of the loyal opposition Party and by the anaesthetizing effects of the presidential elections." Encore une fois: http://www.worldcantwait.net/ Everyone up on the impeach train!!!!! Love & Peace, Patti P., going back to my little ranch house on the hill that has no computer in it....waaah! I guess it's time for me to come out of my latest few months of only-joni lurkdom I to answer that question. I was at the taping and actually was able to wangle a spot independently of the JMDL. It was truly a magical evening I will never forget. Nor will I forget the 3 times I've been lucky enough to meet Joni in person as a result of the wonderful people I have met on this list. I have left and come back quite a few times not because of the list itself (although flame wars have flared brightly at times) but because of personal circumstances which limited the time I had to devote to it. I've been lurking because I just barely have time to delete and skim right now. I guess if I'm honest, me believing Joni when she said she had finally retired played into it as well. Just to depressing for me to talk about her when I thought there would never be anything new. I logged back in when I checked the website after a long hiatus and saw that a 3 ring circus going. Anyway. I'm baaaaaaaack! How: Like many others on the list - I'm sure the newfangledness of the Internet and having the ability to type in Joni's name and finding links is what actually connected me to the list. Why: I didn't think I had a choice. How could one not sign up? My friends and acquaintances always associated me with Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and most all the "sensitive singer songwriters" -- and since that was one of the least offensive parts of my personality - I cultivated it. My wife was recently asked by one of her friend's daughter (who's about 25 years old) how we met. She told her that I used to wear a Joni Mitchell T-shirt and she thought that was cool and made it a point to meet me. (Oh how I wish I still had that shirt - I wore it out ... really wore it out.) My wife then told her I still loved Joni as much now as I did then. The young woman replied "Joni Mitchell - that's an unusual shirt for a boy to wear ... but if Tim's been in love for thirty years with another woman it's good that it was Joni Mitchell. You made the right choice." But really, having a group of people who not only understood her music but genuinely knew it and loved it made me feel at home. Many would say ... oh yeah I like Joni Mitchell, but only know Taxi or Help Me - at least in the 90s. In the 70's and early 80's the people I hung out with really did know her better. I don't post much, but I read the digest every day. And finally, while this seldom poster is pouring his heart out ... let me reveal the Tim paradox: I love Joni. I love making compilations and have made about approximately 1,456,908 of them. I never put Joni on one - that is - except my running mix ... which includes DJ's Reckless D (my all time favorite - - bar none- song to run to). Thanks to all on the list for years of enjoyment, great musical advice and interesting thoughts. Very sweet, but I am sure it was all just the company we keep and I am just a mere conduit thru which many good things pass. Jack Neilson named me the conduit. It was 1 year ago today that Jack passed thru to the great beyond. For those who have not hear his music please check out his website at www.jackneilson.com or cdbaby. com/jack neilson he official date of death was 7/21/07, but we think he died sometime the night of the 19th when he was house sitting for some friends. I have alot of funny memories of him at Pazfest. Thanks again Jerry. I love you Jack! How great. Some of us "old farts" forget the new people didn't know him, his accomplishments, and the touching weekend he spent with Joni. One of the most wonderful moments in list history is the moment of silence at the Howling Wolf at Pazfest for Wally's passing while Tiger Bones played on sound system. In fact, the whole Pazfest was one of the greatest times I've ever had filled with dizzying memories. Of all of many successful Paz projects, for me this will be his legacy!
