The last time I was harsh on him because he sang, "I Did It My Way" a few years back on one of those late night talk shows and it was kind of out of line for a Vice-Presidential candidate, plus he needs to practice on his voice. I still give him a thumbs-up for going against the grain and it suits him betterto sing and do the artistic things that bring him fortune and fame. I also said he should quit the political scene and get a job like Jerry Springer's. I was upset like you are and I didn't calculate my emotions right, either. So, that's it, Doc. Settle down, Patti. At first I didn't quite understand the JMU thing until I realized why I am on this List. ;-) Hope you (hi Sherelle!) like St. Vincent -- although its okay if you don't. ;-) I am learning French by the way so: (1) I can talk to you with perfect Francophone accent, (2) I can read the writings of French scholars from Foucault to Baudrillard to Barthes whose book we were made to read in English, (3) to focus on what's happening onscreen and not have to look at subtitles when watching the films of Godard, Varda, etc. ;-) Plus French just sounds beautiful when spoken or sung. Have a meaningful summer, y'all. Joseph Patti Parlette a icrit : Cher Joseph and all: Baby, I'm amazed at your post and all the musicians you reference. I must confess that I have never heard of most of them (I hope "humble makes pure"), so I have to thank you for educating me. I don't know what the future holds for you after your PhD, but I humbly suggest, and hope, that you will always be a teacher. Maybe head of Film Studies at JMU! You know, life is for learning. Your posts always remind me of something my Music History professor once said, that really stuck with me. "It's what you know that exposes you to a miracle." In other words, the more you know about something (nature, science, music, films, whatever....), the more you can appreciate it. Your knowledge of film and music astounds me. Sorry, I don't mean to make you blush. Oh, what the hell. Since you're already blushing, I'll add that you you ain't bad looking, and I like the way you hold your drinks in the Citigroup Cafe and Seppi's. I joined the list last November and posted for the first time in December, incidentally in contribution to a discussion on FTR. 2. I found the list through jonimitchellcom. I had googled for Joni and found the website. 3. I had been out of touch with Joni's career for some years for different reasons, my collection of her albums stopped with WTRF. When I came across the WOHAM dvd at the library last autumn I realised Joni had been recording all these years and I wanted to catch up. Also I became interested in her as a person, not just her music. I wanted to learn more about her reunion with her daughter so I googled and found the website and the list. I joined the list because the idea of so many Joni fans in one place fascinated me. All my life - until I found the list - I have never encountered anybody who was into Joni's music as much as I was so the prospect of talking about Joni and especially her lyrics with people who know and appreciate them was very attractive to me. And what I found is more than I could ever have hoped for! Not only are the members of this list Joni-gurus but they are also very friendly, genereous and including. We have a core quintet plus two backup singers and it's a tight well-rehearsed ensemble of players who LOVE Joni music. Some original arrangements and some note for note renditions (down to the smallest detail!) As usual we're tackling some challenging tunes but you just gotta hear the choral Shadows and Light to believe it...it ain't the simplified Persuasions version! We've added Blue, Talk to Me, FMIP, Cherokee Louise, Amelia (with two swirling guitars and vibes) and an arrangement of Woodstock that is Bill Frisell-meets-U2 since the last show. The finest drummer in our area is with us this time and he and the extra singers take the whole thing to a new level. If you are in driving distance of Fallbrook CA which is between San Diego and Riverside off the I-15 we would love to have you come and hear what we've been developing for two years. It will certainly be the best $15 you ever spent. Tickets and more info at http:// robinadler.com/ or email me off list for directions or questions. Meanwhile, I think she might be referring to the Crucifixion - but then again, why should she feel like she was being crucified at that time? She had had tremendous success with Blue, after all. Yet, the song is about the downside of showbiz - "they toss around your latest golden egg, speculation, well, who's to know if the next one in the nest will glitter for them so" - so the lines you cite could also mean that she just got used to and was starting to enjoy her success and the admiration it earned her when the record company put pressure on her to keep on creating new success for them - bringing out the hammers, and the boards and the nails envokes in me an image of hard, physical work, like a carpenter's work. The band she was watching on tv "seemed so much confetti" - had not done serious work? Again, the image of Crucifixion might also have been in her mind for what might symbolically happen to her if she let the industry down, if she did not live up to what "they" expected of her or if she refused to live up (or down) to standards other than her own. In an interview I read she said that FTR was her first swan song, so she must have been fed up at the time, if for personal or professional reasons only she knows. Maybe both. Sometime in the late nineties we got the internet and my hubby at the time looked up Joni Mitchell for me, and that led to this list. Like many of you, I didn't know anyone else who was as moved by Joni's music as I was, who found it so incredible. Until that day I had known not one soul who liked Joni. The PC and the list changed my life radically. For the better. Incredibly so. The downside: whilst I knew nothing about my two favourite singers, (or very little) Joni and Carly, and knew no one else who liked them, they both remained fantasy figures-perfect. I found that not only did they have feet of clay but so did their fans. They both(Carly and Joni) helped me survive my young days and whilst I miss the magic and mystery of them before the PC, I would not turn back the clock. - -- bw colin www.colinknits.blogspot.com/ www.tantra-apso.com www.designyourownsweater.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 23:15:49 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: The JMDL... I have been trying to reply to this "inquiring minds want to know" thread, but have been slammed. Getting ready to go back out for 9 days thru the Northeast, including Boston area, Ct., Schenectady area, Pa. and then on to Traverse City Michigan. I joined the list not to long before the video taped gathering in Burbank. My mom passed in 1996 and after that I dove into the computer and of course one of the first things I looked for was Joni Mitchell and participated with various online boards about Joni. I started gathering unreleased music and live recordings by her and eventually came to the mother ship. I submitted a story about a love affair I had in Paris with a lady named Julie who turned me on to Joni's music and the magic tunings. Wally Breese sent me a signed copy of the lyrics book cause he liked my story and because he was such a beautiful man. It also led me my first Jonifest in Topsfield and the rest as they say is...music sweet music and such wonderful friends. I tried to search for the stories but I think they are buried in the archives somewhere. My best friend David Mingus (who's in the hospital right now, so ya'll send some good vibes) was an absolute Joni Mitchell nut. He didn't have a computer, so I would print all the information on Joni's bio pages and give them to him. It was the beginning of 1998 when Wally Breese started a writing contest, a fictional story about Joni, but you had to be a member of the JMDL in order to enter. My friend David loves to write, so he wanted me to sign up for the JMDL so he could enter his short story. There were some great stories submitted by the JMDL, and Bill Dollinger's hilarious story won (I think). Anyway, I got hooked on the JMDL and eventually Mingus got a computer and joined the list too. I don't post that often anymore, but I try to read a lot of the post.
