If you're talking about stress & worry, I'd agree. Take each day at a time and don't stress about the future, but by the same token you HAVE to PLAN for the future - and that's the real source of the problems that Mia discussed so darn eloquently in her post. The "borrow and spend" mentality of our government (that began with Reagan) has long ago trickled down to the middle and lower classes (unlike the tax cuts for the rich that were supposed to). Corporations are now totally driven by the bottom line and outsource whenever they can see an extra dollar on the bottom line. The have-and-have-mores and the huge corporations now only want more & more, and they don't care about planning for tomorrow, or ten years, or twenty or forty. When China reevaluates their currency, when our energy policies FINALLY are forced to be revised, when Americans realize that they can't just keep running up credit card debt, massive economic changes will follow. Mia has children, as do I. When you raise someone who will be faced with that 40-year future, you tend to more concerned about it as opposed to just climbing into the tub and putting the blinders and headphones on. The REAL bottom line is that whether or not you are a business, thinking ahead is GOOD business. I think one of the most touching tributes came from Eddie Van Halen who after telling him something to the effect of, "If it were not for you, I would not be here..." he gave him a kiss on his head in gratitude. While we are debating, people are still dying in a war that we shouldn't be fighting because the people we are fighting for don't even want us there. It's quite a mess we've gotten ourselves into here. I liked past President Clinton. I still like him, but I'm not going to pretend he didn't do anything wrong. He did. What I do like about him is even if he never comes right out and says, "I really screwed up" (which he may have), he is trying to make his life count for something. I was on another discussion board speaking about how people who get into the spotlight very seldom come away unscathed. When you're there, you are going to do something to screw it up and as sure as you are born, someone is going to point it out to you. That's life and that's the way it is. Being a public figure puts you in a glass house and the rest of the world has their stones ready to throw. It doesn't matter if you're a republican, a democrat, an actor, musician, politician...it doesn't matter. You're out there. This a basic part of human nature I think we all need to step back and understand that. We seem to be fighting over the symptoms without getting to the heart of the matter. We're all like little children saying, "they started it first!" as an excuse and explanation for why we throw our stones too. It's the wise parent who sees past this sidetrack and says to both siblings, "Enough! Time out! Both of you...go to your rooms!" As part of human nature, I think what people abhor most is someone who will not own up to something they did wrong. I think that's why the world dislikes President Bush so much (and it's also my beef with him) Even if a he doesn't verbally own up to the wrong, if he lets his actions speak for him in a positive way, that would help appease some of the angst that the world has towards him. Even Paris Hilton got a break when she did that! Another thing that draws the ire of human nature is a person unwillling to yield or even compromise in any way. We had a president of Galludet University here in D.C. that caused such an uproar that students boycotted and protest even under threat of arrest. The story was that they felt she wasn't "deaf enough" but when probed deeper, it was her behavior that sparked the outcry. She had a history of being totally unbending, unyielding and uncompromising in her policies. That is what sparked the outrage over her appointment. Alumni came from all over the world to support the students in their fight to oust her and they finally won. You see, one thing that will not be denied in human nature is the need for respect. When people feel they don't have it from someone that should be giving it to them, they cry out and demand it. With our dual system of government, no one is ever going to be truly "happy" when a decision is made but I think what we have going on right now is beyond that. It is a total disconnect from the people. It is akin to a child putting their hands over their ears and saying, "La, La, La....I can't hear you!" You know how you felt when someone did that to you...you wanted to pop them in the jaw didn't you? That's what America and the world is feeling towards President Bush right now because they feel that's what he's doing to them and the rage keeps growing because it doesn't seem like he ever STOPS doing it. If he would just take his hands down and stop doing that, maybe we can all work something out. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a lover of peace. Not just peace from the war, but peace of mind. I hate the anger and ire that comes from when people are divided. I wish it were physically possible to do that exercise where you sit in a circle and when handed an object, you are allowed to vent all of your frustrations you feel. While you are venting, no one is allowed to interrupt. It teaches people to listen to one another. We don't truly understand each other's reasonings and until we do, we're never going to come to a solution. I am trying to explain without malice why I am upset with President Bush right now and I hope that those who defend him and the war are able to listen and hear what I'm saying. I also hope that those who want to end the war and are extremely angry with the president also listen. I'm trying to find a solution and without true communication, that is not possible. She says that theatre they were in was really small--the cameras made it seem as if they were at the Gorge or some big Broadway theater. Either way, the Beatles were extraordinary. Sorry to be running behind the times, just like..... I think it was Monika, Catherine, and Marianne who said they don't have cellphones. Is that right? I'm not completely sure.....I have CRS. Anyway, Ladies of the JMDL Canyon, I worry about you sisters on a night ride home alone w/ no cellphones. So, here's a list for you. (ringTONE = silly) Top Ten Reasons to Own a Cellphone: 1. If you are on a lonely road and you are travelling, travelling, travelling, looking for something and you can't find it, you can call someone to find out where it is! (Even if you've got road maps from two dozen states -- sometimes they don't help.) 2. If it is a night right home, darkness darkness no color no contrast, and you dream flat tires that become real, you can call AAA or a friend of spirit and sing "Help Me." 3. Along the same (white) line(s), if you drive your car into a ditch, you can also call AAA or a friend of spirit. (And if you drive a car appropriately named "Mort", you are very likely to need one!) 4. If you're caught in a crowd (whether you are holding some honey who came on to you or not), you can call friends caught in the same crowd, and find them. True story: I was supposed to meet up w/ two h.s. friends at the intermission of the CSN concert two years ago. I could not reach them due to the noise. Finally I ducked into a corner and screamed into the phone: "Eddie! Where ARE you?" He screamed back: "I'm at the top of section A202, waving a bottle of Bud." Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear, standing right next to me, but a man waving a bottle of Bud! Ha....did we ever laugh and toast to nothing! 5. If you're in the CitiGroup Cafe at Carnegie Hall before the Joni Mitchell Tribute begins and you have to meet someone outside to give them their tickets, you can stay with all the pretty people there and drink sweet champagne and listen to sweet (song)birds you are Jenny and Sherelle sing and you know there may be more pretty people there (everywhere there was a song and a celebration), until the person who bought your extra Tribute tickets calls your cellphone and you go out underneath the streetlights to find him, and you hardly miss any Joni action at all! 6. You're settling down into the clickety clack on the train to NYC for the Joni Carnegie Hall Tribute and you are overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation and you can hardly WAIT and your cellphone rings and it is Julius telephone screaming: "Where ARE you? We just met Judy Collins!" and you can reply: "I'm running behind the times, just like this train!" 7. If you're sitting in a dark cafe and you don'twantnobodycominovertomytableigotnothintotalktoanybodyabout, you can just shut the damned thing off and let voicemail take a message until the phase is over and you get your gorgeous wings again. 8. If you're driving into town with a dark cloud above you, and a Joni song suddenly comes on the radio, you can pull off the fine white lines of the free free way and dial in the number of a Joni friend who's bound to love you for calling. 9. If you're on a lonely road and you see that a roof is ripped with hurricanes and power lines are overloaded And the sparks are flying And loose wires are lashing out and angry young people are crying, you can drive right past that tragedy and then pull over in a safe zone and call 911 for help. 10. If you're driving across a burning desert and your car overheats, again you can call AAA. And you know..... Love, Patti P., tethered to a ringing telephone P.S. I wrote most of the above two months ago and never completed it or sent it. Then today, I just an email about cellphones so I went in my draft box and dug it out. And here is the info on cellphones for anyone interested. A friend of spirit just got this service and she is really happy with it. (And she loves and has met with and has talked to Joni so she has a broader sensibility!) She was happy to tell AT & T to f@#k off with this action, too. "A great new phone that does great things. Glad you got to see it-from the 3 or 4 songs they did at Live Earth, it was clear that they have gelled into a single, vibrant unit. Copeland is one of the greatest drummers ever, Sting's a great bassist, vocalist and songwriter, and Andy is a first class guitar player-was watching him do some difficult fretted harmonics on one of the songs, as well as some tasty/nasty licks. Very few guitarists can effectively make a trio work so well. With those three, what more do you need? Driven to cheers? The "Les Paul: Chasing Sound" show was excellent-so much archival material. What an amazing guitarist he was and still is. It was obvious, once they pointed it out, that Django was a big influence. McCartney said they played "How High The Moon" at their first gig in Liverpool. Also amazing that he has all the original equipment he made/ modified to make those incredible records that still sound (overused word of the day) amazing. Fookin' amazing. Loved the show-the dvd has extra stuff on it. Rent it if you can find it. RR From: "Sherelle Smith" > Kerry, I actually got to see part of this program last night quite by > accident! Possibly that yearly show somewhere around August, maybe? Would you please give details? That would be nice. Off or online is fine by me. Thanks! When I was a Junior in high school, I was one of Sister Pauline's prized Latin students. She took about 5 of us to a statewide competition held at UTAustin. Austin was still small and quaint back then. We stayed in some of the dorms. I was so excited to be there in the college scene, UNTIL, I picked up the school's newspaper and saw the Blue album cover with Joni's high cheekbones enhanced with the shadows and light. Joni was playing that very night and I could have gotten in with someone's school ID but Sr. Pauline would not let me out of her sight. That had to have been a Friday night, because the next day was the competition. But, my position in life at that moment with Latin and Sr. Pauline came down like a lead balloon. Poor Sr. Pauline knew what I was going through that day, but she just could not let me go, unless we all went. I couldn't imagine myself with a nun and some nerdy girls at the concert but something was better than not seeing Joni at all for the very first time in my life. Well, it happened that Sr. Pauline could not fancy our way in because we needed student IDs and I told her I had gotten a hold of two student ID's for my best friend and me, but it was a "no"-show because of her responsibility with us girls. I understood. :( ::::::: jeannie Still :( after all these years. PS Is there a list of every concert Joni ever gave? That had to have been 1973 and was basically non-announced. Even afterward, there was no mention of that Joni concert in either Austin or San Antonio. It was alike a big blurry dream--kind of like a dreaded dream come true. Absolute truth!! Weird, huh? :( Donna Binkley wrote: No, unfortunately she's not going to be there. But I will! There is a tribute band doing her music and I have posted the link below. I had NO idea the war with Iraq was being financed by China now. This is terrible! If China becomes more powerful than us in the near future and they start acting the way Bush is acting towards the "have something but we're gonna cohersively take it all away from you" countries, imagine how they would treat us if they invaded us. The torture and the conditions they'd have us under would be awful if they don't change their ways based on animal stewardship. And most probably, Bush's, Cheney's, Rumsfeld's, Rove's, etc., grandchildren, along with ours, would be among those having to pay for their forefather's mistakes. Not one person is exempt when the walls come tumbling down, like those of Jericho, even down in Uruguay, Chile and Argentina, where all these guys have purchased land. You think they'd actually defend this country under those conditions. Like Cheney said, "Not just, "no,' but hell no." It's very sad. These men are the axis and the poles of true greed and evil. And they think that the Earth belongs to them. Oh, Great Spirit, come help us. We're so alone and nobody's stopping them. They are like children let loose at a ToysR'Us store and all the "have mores" are being told by the master Bush, "Grab 'em while you can. Leave the whole fucking place empty. We're heading down south any how, the land from where Che Guevara saw us coming. Har, har, har." Jeannie NP: Tiempos ~Ruben Blades~ I love him!! Mia said: Each and everyday the lives that are taken and affected by this corruption, er,, ineptness are mounting. The debt to pay for this immoral occupation in Irag, which has become a haven for terrorist recruits, has to be financed by China. We don't have the money, because all Bush's "haves and have-mores" (yes, Bush really said that, it's on video-disgusting behavior) have gotten huge tax breaks and no money is coming in. Meanwhile, the corporate cronies, especially in defense and oil, are making out like bandits. When Warren Buffet is shocked that people like him are getting more corporate welfare, something is definitely wrong. Each and everyday, the debt and deficit are mounting. Where is all the money going to come from to take care of our elderly, disabled, children's education, etc... when it's all been pissed away. Yeah, sure, things appear fine now, but when we have to pay the piper, interest rates will go thru the roof affecting the economy and jobs, ... all this stuff makes me sick to think about. I'd like to say, oh well, we get what we deserve; but it's our children, grandchildren, and so on that will have to pay for our mistake - our blindness. What a waste! It really is, as Joni said, the beginning of survival, unless we change course soon. I must go find a happy place now. Got any suggestions?
