Problem is, I don't know how to copy a record to CD. I am almost positive the station has an equipment to do this so I'll inquire about it. I have been fascinated lately with turntables and vinyls. Much of it has something to do with the fact that I play a good number of LPs in the station because so many records have yet to make it to the CD format. The other is my recent discovery of a place that sells cheap LPs that carry very good titles. I will be asking about the right equipment but I thought I'd ask it first here on the List. Can you buy a turntable that has a built-in design within its system to copy records to CDs? I would appreciate any leads. Reply to me offlist or on the List in case others also want to know. Last night it occurred to me that, more than a year ago, I bought Melissa's first two albums on vinyl via eBay. I'm kind of disorganized at times ("I'm just funny that way"), and so I finally opened the package last night! The album covers show a little wear, but the vinyl is in excellent shape. I don't have my turntable hooked up right now, but it was just a fascinating trip down Memory Lane to pull the albums from their sleeves and see the old Bell records label ... (Memories of Partridge Family albums filled my head.) The albums are "Home to Myself" and "Bright Eyes" and I think I'll have to connect the turntable this weekend and continue that trip ... The all-in-one solution, if you already have a stand-alone CD burner, would be to get something like the Vestax Bob mentioned. There is also a new breed of turntable that plugs directly into your computer's USB port. If you don't have a stand-alone CD burner, this might be the cheapest way to go. Here's one for just over $100: http://www.amazon.com/Ion-iTTUSB-Turntable-USB-Record/dp/B000BUEMOO Audio Technica also makes non USB models that plug into your computer, a $94 model http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MEYVIG/ref=pd_cp_e_2/104-6844730-3076732?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=0C7PJQVVK9V64DYC4F8M&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_i=B000BUEMOO and a more high end $178 model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NOAY6I/ref=pd_cp_e_3/104-6844730-3076732?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=0C7PJQVVK9V64DYC4F8M&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_i=B000BUEMOO You can also assemble the needed equipment yourself. You need a turntable, cartridge (magnetic or moving coil, avoid the cheap ceramic type)(this is your "needle") and a preamplifier to amplify the tiny signal from the cartridge. This plugs in to the input jacks of your stand-alone CD burner. A big thanks to Monica and Garret for their assistance with this volume. Here's where you can go get it: http://tinyurl.com/2q2vwd And here's what's on it: 1. Takada Ren - California: I suppose at some point I would have been shocked and amazed upon hearing that there was a Japanese slide guitar player who covered "California" but after everything I've been exposed to in the past 7-8 years since I started this project I have to say that pretty much nothing shocks me any more. But I still get amazed, and I find this lazy (in a good way) laid back guitar and drum instrumental pretty amazing. 2. Chris Thomas King - Big Yellow Taxi: This is from Chris' 2006 release titled "Rise" - he's a New Orleans artist and most if not all of the songs dealt with his reaction to a post-Katrina world. I'm sure he was drawn to BYT for the whole "don't know what you got til it's gone" mindset. It's a nice recording, featuring a very full and lively sound. 3. Sonido Electrico - Woodstock: From south of the border comes this electrified CSNY-wannabe cover off of an obscure LP. It actually sounds a bit like The Little River Band doing the song. 4. Bert Bailey & The Jets - Both Sides Now: It's impossible for me to see the title on this one and not think about Benny & The Jets - what makes it stranger still is that these guys are a West Indies band and John-Taupin wrote all of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road while they were in Jamaica. Perhaps there was some influence there....anyway, this is a fun little mostly organ instrumental, has a little Caribbean flavor to it but not a lot. 5. Andy Gilbert - Blue: One of my favorites on the disc, from a comp that came out last year. Has a very atmospheric Peter Gabriel feeling to it with some vocoder vocals, synths and such - this one may not be a favorite among the purists but I enjoy its originality. 6. Emborg/Larsen Quintet - All I Want: More great Joni coverage from Denmark. She reminds me a little of Dionne Warwick. The backing is mostly piano but there's also some mighty fine bass and sax featured too. I think you'll agree that this is one of the highlights of this collection. 7. doa - Woodstock: OK, here's another Japanese entry - this time it's a classic rock cover band and they do quite a few CSNY songs. They're young punks so they bring a nice amount of energy to their treatment. 8. Jensen Singers - Both Sides Now: An acapella version that takes direction and arrangement from the Singers Unlimited version, which means it is light & playful. These guys and gals are from Germany. 9. Ron Mesland's Zang Voor Vriendschap - Strenge Vorst: A Dutch-language on "River" (Strange Frost). It's very nice, and unless I'm mistaken he also sneaks the Case Of You riff in there as a bonus. 10. Bridgette and Friends - The Circle Game: A by-the-book treatment of the fireside classic with some simple accompaniment. Nothing overly wrong with it, and nothing too exciting about it either. 11. Sing-In Boulder - Woodstock: It's our friends from Boulder once again, this time doing a full blown psychedelic version of Woodstock with lots wailing harmonicas and the whole 9 yards. 12. The Mike Abene Orchestra - Both Sides Now: Now this one is really bizarre - it's an early karaoke-type LP from the early 70's, you're supposed to put it on the turntable and sing along with the record - only thing is, it's really tricky to find the place where you're supposed to come in. Listen and see if YOU can figure it out, but I warn you - just when you think you've got it made, bad news will come knockin' at your garden gate. 13. The Jazz Circle - Goodbye, Porkpie Hat: The Jazz Circle is a small 'big band', this is a nice jazz stretchout of over 11 minutes with Joni's lyrics from their 2006 release. The singer is no Joni but he holds his own. 14. Tricia Corrigan - All I Want: Another nice version, poppy & playful as it should be. Comes to us courtesy of Ireland - Tricia typically writes her own stuff but she obviously knows a good song when she hears it. 15. Roy Peters and Friends - Woodstock: Whoa! Is that Mark Knopfler playing guitar? It's Joni Mitchell meets the Sultans of Swing. 16. Claus Ulrich - River: Another entry from Germany, an original arrangement by Claus and some nice slide guitar work too. A nice compliment to track 1. 17. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Both Sides Now: A little misleading, this is NOT actually the Band but rather is a solo guitar version by Randy Scruggs, pretty much the same thing he would recreate on his solo album. 18. Linda Foster - I Don't Know Where I Stand: So what do you get when you cross Linda Foster with a song by a flower child? Why, a Foster Child of course! Sorry about that. Anyway, Linda is from Rochester, NY and is a cabaret singer which bodes well for her delivery of this emotional song. 19. Jerney Molenaar - Woodstock: And we wind things down with a lovely unplugged version of the Eva Cassidy arrangement. Jerney, like Eva, has a powerful yet pretty voice. So there you have it - 18 tracks, 78 minutes - who else fills up a CD like me? Hopefully you find something here that you like, at least the couple of you that will go get it. And now, I'm off to the beach, but I'll have another NEW batch in a month and maybe some more fun surprises betweeen then & now. Not even up to a high school assembly performance level. She mumbled, mugged in the camera, sang very little and hung on the mike stand like she was drunk. As for Jane Siberry, I think she is one of the greats. She always has provided music to push her, and her listeners boundaries of song form and the exploration of inner emotions. Yes she misses with some material, we all could use an editor, but I expect more great efforts from Ms. Siberry. She is one whom I would relate to Joni as having the same experimental spirit in songwriting, voice and attitude about her art.
