She won't be wrong. I'm wondering if you're Canadian?? Because, I've lived on the Canadian Prairies all of my life (40+ years), and I definitely think Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot should be honoured with a stamp. Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot are Canadian icons. Canadians grew up with Anne Murray; she's been a fixture on television here since the 1960s. Gordon Lightfoot is equally admired. Although he has had a lower profile than Anne Murray, he is admired for his artistry and especially for his songs about Canadian historical events (Canadian Railroad Trilogy; Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald). I also think they hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians because, unlike 90 per cent of entertainers who make it big outside of Canada, they have continued to live in Canada. Joni gets a free pass in this regard because Canadians are not stupid, and we know the impact she has had on the world stage. She also lives part time of the year in British Columbia. Who shouldn't be on the list?? Paul Anka, of course. Not only because he is a hack, but because he has had a contemptuous relationship with Canada in general, and his hometown Ottawa in particular, since the beginning of his career. He should be something like 573rd on the list, somewhere after people like Celine Dion and Nickleback and all the other schlock-meisters. My list of Canadian musicians deserving of the honour -- 1. Joni 2. Neil Young 3. Gordon Lightfoot 4. Anne Murray 5. Leonard Cohen 6. The Band 7. Stompin' Tom Connors (No, I'm not kidding) 8. Oscar Peterson 9. Glenn Gould 10. Stan Rogers Honourable Mentions -- Wilf Carter; Hank Snow; Don Messer; Guy Lombardo; Ian & Sylvia; kd lang; Bruce Cockburn; The Rankin Family; Blue Rodeo. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2007 10:57:02 +0100 From: "Jamie's Box of Paints" Subject: Re: Original photos from Joni's visit to Mandolin Brothers in 1976 You can tell why Joni held so many men mesmerised. Gene, did I know you're around Sacratomato? (LOL ... I hadn't heard that one before and I love it.) I was in Sac just last weekend, am there frequently as that's where my partner's mom and sister live. I would be curious to know your take on how Sebastopol has or hasn't changed in 30 years. If you do decide to go to the show, let me know because you'll need a map -- or GPS -- to find Studio E. It's out in what's left of the apple orchards. Very country, very small, feels like someone's house (although it looks more like a barn from the outside). The place might hold 100 people. The first time I went, Nina Gerber was backing Audrey Auld Mezera. They were excellent together. Yes, Nina is frequently at Studio E. O' my Monika, that would surely be one of my dreams come true, if only I wasn't so darn shy! Who has met Joni? Those of you who have, how did y'aqll react or feel? I'd be myself completely, once I'd fight off my tears and fears and just be the person Our Father meant for me to be. The other person I'd love to meet would be Ry Cooder. I'd have 1000's of questions ask him concerning him concerning the development of his unique style nobody else has. He has two voices. His physical voice and his innermost voice through his guitar. I hear it all and it is unbelievably beautiful to see and feel..just like Joni's. Jeannie After attending this year's Jonifest I was made aware that quite a few people have actually met Joni. I was just emailing with a colleague across campus on offical business and SOMEHOW I started talking about Joni (imaginez-vous!). Well, you'll like what he wrote back: "Joni nut, huh? I know all about that. One of my best friends in California was obsessed with her and her music is a kind of mental soundtrack to those years of my life in the early 80's. I love her too." Spark! Zap! Electricity! Since he used the word "obsessed", I went on to tell him about JMOCD, etc. (in Jonispeak "etc." = AYKTMBM, for Catherine). Hey, all you California aging children....did any of you have a best friend in the early 80's who now works in CT? Nah, that's a dumb question. There must be thousands of Joni Mitchell fans from California. Or a half a million.....strong..... Love, Patti P. P.S. Don't forget prayers for peace at 9 pm. It's the very same Penryn! My family actually lives in the house that Griffith Griffith built in 1867, and which was owned by his great-niece Enid until she died, at which point my parents bought it. It's right next to the Valencia Club actually...lots of drunk rednecks around on Saturday nights, but we live with it. The Valencia Club is right across Taylor Rd (old Highway 40) from the granite quarry itself, where there is a tiny museum. Most of the stuff in the museum came from this house when my parents were cleaning it out. Oh yeah, and the palm trees! A hundred and some odd years ago, lots of Washington fan palms were planted as property line markers...you can still see them along some roads, as well as lining our driveway. I'm a graduate of Penryn Elementary and Del Oro High, so really a local girl. Hi neighbor!
