You will find them in large stores and malls mostly but also at railway stations. At restaurants toilets usually are free. With each new song I write, I try to turn up the personal heat just a little more each time. I have the CD "Artist's Choice: Joni Mitchell-Music that matters to her" and I love what she says in it about the group "New Radicals" and their song, "You Get What You Give" which I also fell in love with not knowing how Joni felt. She said, "It was the first thing I had heard in decades that seemed to be inspired by something greater than personal ambition. It was sassy and smart and had real emotions. It rose fromthe swamp of 'McMusic' like a flower of hope..." This lets me know where she is coming from musically and what is important to her. I'm always running behind... but how could I resist this thread? I can't actually say any albums changed my life (a pretty bold statement) but the following five certainly had a major impact on it (in chronological order, as it seems to make the most sense): 1. The 1963 World Open Drum & Bugle Corps Competition championships, Volume Two (produced by Fleetwood Mobile Recording), including The (NY) Skyliners, Reading (PA) Buccaneers, (Long Island) Sunrisers, and Pittsburgh (PA) Rockets. I've loved drum & bugle corps music/marching & maneuvering since my cousin was in a corps (in the 1950's & 1960's) and I've bought quite a few albums over the years. The very first record I bought was actually just an EP (produced by Stetson D. Richmond) with one corps on each side, and it included my cousin's corps, the Selden Cadets Golden Lancers, recorded at the 1959 Dream Contest (at the time, the most prestigious event in that genre). 2. The Who's TOMMY; I was impressed by "the world's first rock opera" and it was released just before Ro & I held our Psychedelic party (in 1969) featuring body painting, black lights, and several of our friends (in a quasi band) playing live in our basement. Ahhh. THOSE were the days! 3. NAZZ, NAZZ (on red vinyl), the second album by the Nazz (Todd Rundgren's first REAL band) from 1969; it introduced me to the strange and wonderful world of Todd, who's musical magic has given me so much inspiration & enjoyment over the years. 4. 1974's COURT & SPARK; it introduced me to Joni... 'nuff said! 5. 2003's THE WIND, by Warren Zevon. A 55 year-old musician is told he's dying of inoperable cancer and has six months to live. So, what does he do? He makes one final album. And I think it's a good one. Certainly had an impact on my life. Now, a few SONGS that changed/affected my life: 1. "For A Dancer," Jackson Browne (when I die, I want this one played at my wake, just before the priest gives his final little address to those in attendance). Contains the line, "in the end, there is one dance you'll do alone." 2. "Does Anybody Love You?", poetic philosophy off Todd's 1973 A Wizard, A True Star album, containing the line, "love between the ugly is the most beautiful love of all." 3. "Down To You", by Joni; a graphic novel conveyed by song. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. - ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #185 ********************************* - ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe - ------- Siquomb, isn't she? Their original purpose was to prevent junkies from shooting up in them because they are on a time limit. Too bad if you have a bowel disorder. A self cleaning cycle begins within a few minutes and if you're locked in - too bad. The big topic of controversy in Sydney lately has been revenue raising via parking fines and new meters everywhere so, it's not such a leap to include coin operation to the automated toilets. Also, wouldn't NRH have been written in the late 80s or very early 90s (not the early 80s as mentioned)? And...the "while Muslims stick up Washington" reference really isn't outdated. It's an historical reference, which is something different altogether. Usually a lurker lately, Bryan From: "Gerald A. I think about this often. This is just morning ramblings....just returned from taking Beegie and Sammie for a half-hour walk....now other dogs are on their morning outings and my guys get flipped out. I'm gonna be a night walker. I have a vivid memory of the night a Philly radio station played (uninterrupted) "The Hissing of Summer Lawns". I was living in a building with 18 floors and I was on the 14Th at the time. I wanted to be alone. I sat down on the floor and hardly moved throughout the entire album. The big deal was that the album was due to be released that week. Each of Joni's albums are a marked departure from all others. It's as if she put a period on the last sentence of a chapter in her life and shares (just a little) of the next. I usually don't fall in a loving state with a new album. There's always one or two songs I want to hear again but it takes some time. But, of course, there's always Joni's voice...her lyrics. But each song has a personal complexity that I integrate into my world and translate the lyrics to fancy things that are going on within myself. In some ways I feel that Joni has been a shield for me. Or maybe she lends me a different coat each day with pockets filled with the armor each day requires. I've wondered why I'm so emotionally attached to Joni. She lives within me through her art, her music, the thoughts she has shared through interviews. I am in a constant state, even after all these years, of complete awe and respect for our gal. She is so multi-talented and touches multitudes of people in crystal delicate ways....deep within you, she's capable of gently rattling your cage or gently rocking you off to dreamland. I can't ...how can I put it..I can't ...shit...I can't explain it. Almost as though I can't let go of Joni...not that I can't and don't listen to other artists...of course I do. But I've never felt the same intensity that I feel when I listen or read Joni. She's a generous spirit with a need ...an urgent need for privacy. I'm rambling. Here's some 'other artist news'...I mentioned Ane Brun a long time ago. I finally picked up a copy of her only CD. Quite good, I think. She's been 'compared' with Joni...all of these comparisons make me feel ill. Inspired by...okay...but 'the new Joni Mitchell??? Uch!!!! Sherelle, this is for you...I don't remember reading what happened to you but I would imagine it was some sort of personal violence? This is what happened to me and how I saved my life. REHEARSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was at my front door, shoulder bag on my right shoulder and packages in my left hand as I was anything but graceful trying to open the front door. I was living with Richard on this little tiny center city Philly street. I looked up toward my right and about a third up the block, turned in the exact opposite direction than me was a man. We sort of shared a three second stare. I didn't have a good feeling and wasn't anticipating a friendly 'hello'. This guy ran toward me....in leather shoes and I remember thinking, "that's stupid...he should have on sneakers". He gently touch the strap on my shoulder bag and I "introduced' myself in such a manner as even Satan wouldn't want to have coffee with me! And this guy actually puts a gun in my mouth! He said, "Come on, now." And I said, "ooohhhh baby, baby...I know something that resembles the shape of a gun that would feel so much better in my mouth." Then I threw my hands up and declared that I was living in the WILD WILD WEST and I shouted, "I surrender!" I mentioned, casually that I couldn't recognize him because I was looking down and thinking of (a bunch of his body parts)...then I said, "Whoops, gotta pee"..."Whoops, gotta poop"... as I gracefully lowered myself to the ground. I started singing...sooner than I expected he just grabbed my pocketbook and ran. He probably thought I would be too much trouble for the effort. I would have been the third woman he raped and killed that night. There's much more to this story but people...PLEASE REHEARSE!!!! Think about what you'd do in a similar situation and REHEARSE. You have to come off calm and authentic. Now you see...Joni would have come up with a fabulous song about that encounter. I have only bland sentences. I positioned my computer right in front of my bedroom window where I can see my little garden. It's quite lovely. Well....I'm wondering what today will bring...and hoping that today brings all of you something very dear and special. My take on NHR is that she had a great time in Hawaii, and she'd be returning on Friday........but as we all know, her lyrics are "what it means to the individual". Laura, I saw her on TV last week and was amazed! I love this clip as it is her first attempt to move on to the next round and you could feel the energy in the audience as she sung it a cappella. She even has Joni's hairdo doesn't she? I would imagine that Joni sounded similar. There is a real passion for music and singing in this little girl and I could also hear strains of Eva Cassidy's vocal talent while she was singing. I'm so glad that they included some of Eva singing the same song. It brought tears to my eyes as well. I like the way the opening chords of "Do What You Love" served as intro to you and your music. I got goosebumps listening to them speak about how great they found your album and the great shout-out to you. I am so happy for you. Maybe you should devote a page in your website that lists the radio stations that has played your music. Way to go, Sherelle!
