You will find them in large stores and malls mostly but also at railway stations. At restaurants toilets usually are free. If you travel by car, I would advise you to use the pay toilets you can find here and there along the way. They are usually much cleaner than the free ones. Interesting, Catherine, that you had to pay different amounts of money in France depending on what your "business" was. I have never encountered that. I didn't know about this other event Walden Woods Project. It is almost criminal to think that it is not out there in the market considering how many of the music being peddled as great fail to move (at least me). Surely some music producers should have picked this concert for distribution, even in limited copies. Don't know much about some singers mentioned: Deborah Cox - I have seen her CDs in the Soul/Funk/Hip-Hop section of record stores (labels! labels!) so I am assuming she must sound like Gabrielle or Des'ree or even better, Ledisi. Now I wonder how she sounds singing standards. Reba McEntire is one name I always hear but have not owned an album of. Although my sorta intro to her voice was a rather odd one -- some dude was playing a countrified version of "South Pacific" in one of my fave record stores here in Chapel Hill, and a rangy-voiced woman was singing "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Awt-Tha Ma Hey ..." and I did a double take because I have not heard anyone sing in that confident key, in that arrangement. The guy in the counter told me that the album was a version of South Pacific with Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush. I thought her very different style brought out a different nuance to the songs. Nellie is more hillbilly and more motherly than what Mitzi Gaynor or Mary Martin (heck even Glenn Close) had me believe Nellie is supposed to be. So I wonder how Reba sang the song in the Walden Woods show Ethel Merman made famous. Norah Jones would have been great to listen to when she sings the standards like "The Nearness of You" which she sang in her mega-hit album. I like her sleepy and caressing voix while more than half of my friends in school do not like her. Or get her. Michelle Branch is a name I recognize because she, along with Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton were the three names that sorta defined the angry grrrrl music in the late 90s. I wonder if she sang the song assigned to her, straight or with lots of vocal embellishments. Same with Susan Tedeschi who I like very much. She was actually nominated as best New Artist the same year Xtina, Britney and Macy Gray were nominated. I like it when Susan rocks and tap her inner Angela Strehli rather than sing standards although from reports, she seemed to have acquitted herself. Twould be great to hear Joni sing in that setting again with a different group of gals aside from Sheryl Crow, Trisha Yearwood, Paula Cole and Stevie Nicks who also appeared in the first project. Joseph in erratic-weather Chapel Hill np: Melinda Doolittle - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart Mark-Leon Thorne a icrit : Hi folks. I was researching the Don Henley's Walden Woods Project and the Stormy Weather concert and discovered that the concert features a lot more than what appeared on the CD. Several more artists appeared in the concert such as, Deborah Cox and Reba McIntire. They each performed two songs - one jazz standard and one song of their own choice. Except Joni who, performed three songs. One of which was a reworked version of Woodstock with full orchestra. This was apparently to preview the album, Travelogue. This is taken from the Stevie Nicks fan site, www.nicksfix.com (not sure what the "(news)" means. Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Trisha Yearwood Sing For Walden Woods (11/14/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks (news), Trisha Yearwood (news), and Norah Jones (news) performed Wednesday (November 13) at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles for Stormy Weather, a benefit concert for Don Henley (news)'s Walden Woods Project. The all-female lineup represented rock, pop, country, blues, and R&B, also including Reba McEntire (news), Michelle Branch (news), Paula Cole (news), Deborah Cox, and Susan Tedeschi. Though the night was billed as an evening of standards, most of the performers turned to contemporary material. Each woman performed two songs, except for Mitchell, who closed the show with three numbers, including Bob Dylan (news)'s "Sweetheart Like You" and a new, orchestral version of her classic "Woodstock," that served as a preview of her upcoming Travelogue release. Nicks performed "Landslide," originally found on Fleetwood Mac's 1975 self-titled album, and more recently revived as a country-and-pop crossover hit by the Dixie Chicks. For her cover, she chose Etta James's "Sunday Kind of Love." McEntire sang "I Won't Mention It Again," off her 1995 release, Starting Over, followed by Irving Berlin's "I Got Lost In His Arms," from the Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun. Crow presented a re-worked "Run Baby Run," from her 1994 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, then covered Steve Earle (news)'s delicate ballad "Goodbye." Yearwood's vignette, "On A Bus To St. Cloud," was served well by orchestration. She also performed of "The Man That Got Away," best known from the Judy Garland film, A Star Is Born. Jones offered the Band's "It Makes No Difference" and Cole sang Tom Waits (news)'s "The House Where Nobody Lives," which she dedicated to the White House. On that note, Henley, who hosted the event, took his own swipe at the White House's most famous resident, President George W. Bush, with whom he shares a Texas heritage. "He was an idiot then, and an idiot now," he said. Cox's performance included "This Better Earth," originally made famous by Dinah Washington. Blues singer Tedeschi went with a popular standard, turning to "These Foolish Things," while Branch bravely took on Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat." The evening also included an auction, conducted by actor/comedian Paul Reiser (news), along with Henley and his Eagles songwriting partner, Glenn Frey. Items auctioned included a trip on a private jet to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion (news) perform, a guitar autographed by the night's performers, and another signed by Bruce Springsteen (news) & the E Street Band. Also on the block was a chance to sing back-up on a new recording by the Eagles. Here, Frey quipped, "Who wants to buy that, besides Don Felder (news)," referring to the band's longtime guitarist who was ousted from the group in 2001. Love to hear Joni sings smoky jazz songs in her smoky jazz instrument of a voice. "In My Solitude" is not just a great Ellington tuine, its a great song, period. And Tina Turner and Corinne Bailey Rae and Norah Jones in one album? Too much. The listeners will have a great treat! Nice choice of vocalists -- esp. Rae and Tina T. Joseph in CH np: Mindy Doo - Nutbush City Limits James Leahy a icrit : Here is Herbie Hancock speaking about his new Joni Project: Q: You recently performed at the Joni Mitchell tribute at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame gala. Could you talk about your musical relationship with her? A: Joni is an amazing human being, as well as an amazing artist in general. She's a genius. I have a tremendous respect for her. As a matter of fact, my next record is all about Joni Mitchell, from my perspective - it's mostly her songs. We just completed pretty much all the tracks for it. There's still some vocals that need to be done on it. Norah Jones did one vocal, Tina Turner did one, Corinne Bailey Rae is doing one. Joni's going to sing one song and Leonard Cohen, he's doing a spoken word thing that I'm improvising on. I like Siri's voice a lot. She does not really sound like one singer but one could hear echoes of singers as different in styles as Silje Nergaard and Sheryl Crow to Fiona Apple (especially in Siri's "Puzzle") to Karen Peris of Innocence Mission. I may have to ask my friends in Bergen to get this album for me. You also mentioned Sidsel Endresen: wow, I have her album called Undertow and she is one of those singers whose voice seems to acquire a different color when you listen to her album repeatedly. Like Zizi Possi, the voice draws you to the song she is singing -- not background music for sure. Finally, thanks for mentioning the late Radka Toneff. I still get goosebumps when I listen to her version of Jimmy Webb's "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress". The simplicity and understatement in her voice when she sings ". . . but careful if you try / though she looks as warm as gold". Steve Dobrogosz's impressionistic piano offers subtle support. Hearing this song from her is a religious experience for me. Thanks again for the names that you provided for us to explore further the wealth of Norwegian vocal music. Joseph in Chapel Hill np: Melinda Doolittle - There Will Come a Day Oddmund Kaarevik a icrit : I have to add some music for you dear fellow-listers. Just recently being aware of the serch opportunity in myspace, I found one of my new favorites there. (Many thanks to the links that some of you have sent me here, the librarian (I know this is embarrassing) finally found out that it's possible to search for all kind of music... To my defence, I'm finnaly connecting to internet from my home pc, I can't dive into all the music I like while on work...) Siri Gjfre is a norwegian, some would call her Jazz singer, I don't know. Listenig to her latesy album "Survival kit" I would rathercall her life-singer (but I guess this may sound a bit pathetic), like Joni it's not easy to put her into a fixed box. I know she and her musican friends admire Jonis music. And for me it's easy to trace this admiration, even though no single track or her voice quality in any way quite resembles Joni, it's just the feeling, the flow, the taste. All of it. She is real. I like the thought about music being a survival kit. I think it has been that for me. In times that I've been really depressed music - albums - songs - or a single voice have been a great comfort for me. Last winter I had a period like that, and found grat comfort in both Joni's "Taming the tiger" as well as our own Sherelle Smith's "Do what you love" I think music can change your life, and in fact, music can make you live life. I guess some of you find this strong or offending, but it's true for me... I think of Joni, wnhen she worte A case of you. Such strong content. In an utterly elegant way she just puts it all in those two lines 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time... For me those lines has always been especially storng, but the whole song is so full of content, that my cuppeth runneth over... Well back to my thread, in popoular music today, well in norwegian popular music, we have the same issues like you have. Much music is just surface, and no content. When I listen to Siri Gjfres voice and her music, than I feel that she share some of her message to me, to all of humanity (parodon my strong word, this is definately a bit pathetic...) oh well, that just gives me hope, and hope is something I like to cherish and embrase, whenever found, especially when found in popular music. Norway has been blessed with several gifted Jazz-singers. Radka Toneff stands for many of us as some sort of queen, but new vopices like Solveig Slettahjell, Sirig Gjaere and Live Maria Roggen are also amazing. As well as the experimental and ever changing Sidsel Endresen, she is an experience...Well, we could talk about Martha We could talk about landscapes...And I guess I just could go on and on talking about norwegian music, but I won't, 'cause I guess you other things to put your mind into. And I don't want to cause any "Boring ! The old man is snoring" situation here...:-) But before I go I wil leave you with to links wort to check out: Siri Gjaere: http://www.myspace.com/sirigjaere Both songs here stands out, also on the grat album Survival kit. And since this is the JoniMitchellDiscussionList, and even though this is Mr. Bob Mueller's domain, I want to share the coolest Woodstock cover I know, by the band Tuba, consisting of Live Maria Roggen and her partner. Mr.Mueller has of course already added this to his great cover base, and I'm sure he can inform us in wich compilation it may be found, but for newbees or the corius ones, pleas check i out : TUBA DUO: http://www.myspace.com/tubaduo And song two "Woodstock" That's all for now, and I know this was long. Being on "digest", I'm probably the last one to chime in on this ce soir (surely someone else has mentioned Brian Wilson today....I'll put eighteen bucks on Jerry -- Hi Jerry!) On a long night ride home tonight, I was lucky to tune into a station that was doing a tribute to Brian Wilson, on his 65th birthday. Yeah....Beach Boys! I was singing my heart out along with "God Only Knows", "Darlin'", "Surfing U.S.A", "Little Surfer Girl", and you know there may be more. I was back in Santa Barbara in 1967....Summer of Love...driving up highway 101...pickin' up Good Vibrations. Wishing you all Good Vibrations! Patti P. P.S. Just had to google a bit, and share (this is from Wikipedia): Recording Originally composed during the Pet Sounds sessions with original lyrics by Tony Asher, Wilson recorded the song in sections, at different studios in order to capture the sound he heard in his head. Building upon the layered production approach he had begun to use with the Pet Sounds album, Wilson devoted months of effort to this single track. The first version of the song was recorded on February 17, 1966. It was described in the session log as #1 Untitled (or as Good, Good, Good Vibrations), though on the tape Brian Wilson distinctly says "Good Vibrations, Take One". After 26 takes, a rough mono mix completed the session. Rough guide vocals are recorded the following day. By February 25, Wilson placed the recording on hold in order to devote attention to the Pet Sounds album. The track was to be revisited on May 24 1966, and worked on (with Asher's lyrics) until June 18, at which time he put it aside again until August 24. The various sections were edited together in a sort of musical collage, similar to The Beatles' later "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "A Day in the Life" records, both inspired by the works of Brian Wilson (according to Paul McCartney). _________________________________________________________________ Make every IM count. I'm always running behind... but how could I resist this thread? I can't actually say any albums changed my life (a pretty bold statement) but the following five certainly had a major impact on it (in chronological order, as it seems to make the most sense): 1. The 1963 World Open Drum & Bugle Corps Competition championships, Volume Two (produced by Fleetwood Mobile Recording), including The (NY) Skyliners, Reading (PA) Buccaneers, (Long Island) Sunrisers, and Pittsburgh (PA) Rockets. I've loved drum & bugle corps music/marching & maneuvering since my cousin was in a corps (in the 1950's & 1960's) and I've bought quite a few albums over the years. The very first record I bought was actually just an EP (produced by Stetson D. Richmond) with one corps on each side, and it included my cousin's corps, the Selden Cadets Golden Lancers, recorded at the 1959 Dream Contest (at the time, the most prestigious event in that genre). 2. The Who's TOMMY; I was impressed by "the world's first rock opera" and it was released just before Ro & I held our Psychedelic party (in 1969) featuring body painting, black lights, and several of our friends (in a quasi band) playing live in our basement. Ahhh. THOSE were the days! 3. NAZZ, NAZZ (on red vinyl), the second album by the Nazz (Todd Rundgren's first REAL band) from 1969; it introduced me to the strange and wonderful world of Todd, who's musical magic has given me so much inspiration & enjoyment over the years. 4. 1974's COURT & SPARK; it introduced me to Joni... 'nuff said! 5. 2003's THE WIND, by Warren Zevon. A 55 year-old musician is told he's dying of inoperable cancer and has six months to live. So, what does he do? He makes one final album. And I think it's a good one. Certainly had an impact on my life. Now, a few SONGS that changed/affected my life: 1. "For A Dancer," Jackson Browne (when I die, I want this one played at my wake, just before the priest gives his final little address to those in attendance). Contains the line, "in the end, there is one dance you'll do alone." 2. "Does Anybody Love You?", poetic philosophy off Todd's 1973 A Wizard, A True Star album, containing the line, "love between the ugly is the most beautiful love of all." 3. "Down To You", by Joni; a graphic novel conveyed by song. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #240 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
