At that point, they're just being stubborn but if someone wants to hold a grudge, it's their life. Kind of silly, especially if its over something that was so trivial. I was particularly interested in the Australian band, Frente's cover of Blue. They had a big hit in this country in the early 90s called, Accidentally Kelly Street but were never really heard from again apart from a surprise hit with an a capella cover of the New Order song, Bizarre Love Triangle. Blue is not an easy song to sing but the child like vocals of the lead singer seems to pull it off. I also love UK singer, Caroline Lavelle's cover of ACOY. It was the first Joni cover I ever heard but was unaware of these remixes. I always look forward to these volumes. We are very privileged. And how on earth can you determine the sincerity of someone's apology, especially via email which is completely impersonal to begin with. That's a very arrogant attitude to take. If I remember correctly, I made every effort to apologize but instead of having my apology accepted, I was sent email that was intentionally sent to offend me. In my case, I didn't mean to offend anyone, it was a misunderstanding, though I still apologized. It seems that this person can't accept the fact that I had no intention whatsoever of offending anyone. I've made every reasonable effort to move and on and get beyond this while the other person has chosen to "carry this on for as long as necessary" as he says. It's like he wants to be offended, wants to be a victim. I don't believe in sending out negative energy/vibes...life's too short. It's better to move on and let bygones be bygones. I have no desire to "carry this on". The only reason I brought this up was because it was posted that some people have a hard time apologizing. My point was, and still is, it is just as important to accept an apology. Refusal to do so does not mean the other person has not apologized. Victor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 10:36:50 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: A Case of You, and a wedding too I was playing a wedding gig last night, at the Bona Allen Mansion in Bufurd, and had the wonderful opportunity to play and sing "A Case of You" for the first dance. It was kind of an odd setup...I was playing in the grand room though she (the wedding coordinator) had me set up around the corner, kind of behind the edge of a wall that hung out, so I really did not have any view of the room...I was able to see just the edge. So when it came time to play "A Case of You, I couldn't even see the bride and groom dancing! But I thought it went really well...it was a fun song to sing as the words are so passionate. The bride told me when they first met, the groom had made her a mix tape of Joni Mitchell which is why they chose that particular song. She said she likes the Diana Krall version the best though he likes the Joni version the most. When my friend, a trumpet player, first mentioned this gig to me a month or so ago, I practically jumped at the opportunity. I love playing regardless, but getting to sing "A Case of You" made it even more enjoyable. Speaking of performing elsewhere, I've really got to get on the ball and line something up. Adding a little Joni to the repertoire never hurt...:) "A Case of You" seems to be a song that resonates with a lot of people, kind of like "River." Speaking of covers, afterwards, I went to see some friends play at a local tavern. Their band is called Deep Blue Sun and they are so much fun to see live. They do many originals but also throw in cool covers. Last night they played Led Zeppelin "Standing in the Rain" which totally smoked. They had three dummers, two trap kits and one Latin percussion, plus a really good bass player on a 5 string bass and keys, plus a couple of guitars. In their first set, which I missed, I heard they played "Help on the Way/Slipknot" by the Dead which if you're not familiar with is not an easy piece to pull off. Their music is great to dance to....a blend of rock, funk, a little rockabilly....more than anything else, they are really tight which really makes a difference. The Atlanta music scene is not what it used to be, compared to the eighties and early nineties but I'm glad there are a few bands around that still rock. While I'm writing this, my cat Jessica, a brown tabby, is sitting in my lap. If I try to put her on the ground, she hops back up. It's like I can't keep her out of my lap. That's what I love about cats....they are so sweet. Joni, the orange tabby, is in the other room, napping. I don't think she's too pleased that I have sports radio on at the moment. When my friend Amy looks after my cats, she says they watch "Grease" and other stuff like that. Amy went to Bonnaroo this weekend so I look forward to getting a good review when she comes back. You know, that's what you'll find. I just read a story that will make you smile, as an art teacher and a tree-lover. It's an interesting project a Masters of Fine Arts grad student at UConn is doing. It should interest all the fine arts majors/minors and photographers here, too. (Sorry for the length; if I go back to get the link I might lose this post as my computer is getting weird these days.) Unfortunately it's all about spruce trees -- no pinewood or arbutus or climbing banyans. One, Two, Tree: Counting The Spruces Photographer Sees Significance In Humans' Needled Neighbors June 12, 2007 By PETER MARTEKA, Courant Staff Writer The spruces of Willimantic stand tall on the corners of busy streets. Some tower above three-story apartment buildings. Some sit on patches of dirt surrounded by asphalt and abandoned cars. Within the city limits, there are wide ones, skinny ones, fat ones and narrow ones. There are ones that barely reach above the earth and there are those that appear to be scraping the sky. And Matthew Jensen has met them all. That's 2,183 Norway, white and blue spruce trees, captured on a digital camera. That's 89 miles of walking every street in town. And that's 2,183 thumbtacks Jensen placed on an oversized map of the town to mark their location. "I know it sounds odd and it is, I'll be honest," Jensen said on a recent tour of the city where great textile mills once dominated the local economy. "But that's why it's artistic. Everyone collects something. I just happen to collect pictures of spruce trees." For Jensen, who grew up in Danielson and now lives in Willimantic, it's not only a collection of digital images of trees he is seeing through his camera lenses. Since the trees are non-native, they had to be planted by someone, entailing both thought and action on the part of the planter. Over the past 100 years the trees have grown and accumulated, becoming what Jensen calls "the physical manifestation of many similar thoughts." "Therefore a map of the spruce trees becomes a map of human thoughts," said Jensen, a graduate student in the Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Connecticut. So each tree comes with its own story. It could be a story of a family who planted a spruce in a yard just to string Christmas lights. Or a spruce planted by veterans on the town green to remember fallen comrades. Or a spruce planted for privacy from a nosy neighbor. "I began to see them all over town and became fascinated with their form," he said. "Some are perfectly geometric while others grow in the most haphazard and unique ways. They began to personify many human traits and expressions, as trees in art have often been used; however, these qualities seemed more apparent in these particular trees." Jensen, 24, also sees his journey among the spruce as a way to learn about the struggling town, understand its makeup and create a portrait for others to see. Social Photography His work is called social landscape photography, an art form that uses detached images of urban and suburban life by capturing pictures of store-front reflections or structures framed by fences or posters and signs - - basically any image of modern life. "It's a use of photography as a kind of index of life," Jensen said. "Whether it's water towers or gas stations, these are banal things in every day. But when you collect them and amass them, they take on a different strength and vision." Since January, Jensen has spent every sunny day in search of spruces. He called the project "Every Tree in Town" and went down Bolivia Street, along Quarry Street and even walked Oak Hill Road and Elm Street. The exact location and type of each tree were recorded. He also noted whether the specimens were wild, ornamental or yard trees. "Each step of these long walks became an adventure," Jensen said. "The trees gave me a reason to walk down every street, through every park and around every neighborhood. I was able to look at every house, front yard, driveway and tree line. By photographing every spruce tree I have seen more of the town then I ever could have imagined." He believes that many of the trees were planted by immigrants from Eastern Europe. Willimantic has a significant Polish population and the word spruce has its origins in that country Ed Richardson, a Glastonbury resident also known as "big tree hunter of Connecticut," said spruce trees are some of the most popular trees in the state. Many are disease-resistant and fast growing and provide good windbreaks and privacy. "The Norway spruce are all over the place," he said. "They have no problems except for maybe winds or lightning. The tall one on the skyline is probably a spruce tree." Portrait Of A Town Jensen has placed all the photos in a two-volume book and will be displaying many, if not all, of the photos at the Windham Arts Center and Gallery from Aug. 10 to Sept. 15. That's if he can find a big enough wall to fit all of them. "He's very sensitive to the outdoors and what is out naturally occurring in the landscape," said Jane B. Homick, executive director of the center. "It's so unique and with any installation [of a show], there's a certain amount of intrigue." Janet Pritchard, associate professor at the University of Connecticut's Photography and Digital Imaging School of Fine Arts, said Jensen is "full of energy." "His project is perhaps a bit broader in scope and ambition in ways typical of our times," Pritchard said of Jensen's social landscape photography. "The photographs give an appearance of having been made by a neutral observer. ... However, through his inclusion of information beyond the photographic image, both found in objects and data, Matt is striving to make his concern for social issues more obvious to the viewer. "The final result has yet to be fully realized," she added. "But the project is proving an exciting venture as he reaches out to form a more complete picture of Willimantic, a town exemplary in so many ways of the old mill towns in Northeastern Connecticut, through images, objects and community." Jensen is hoping to move on to other mill communities across the state and Northeast and chronicle the spruce trees in those towns such as Danielson, Jewett City and Norwich. "This has become a way for me to portray the community through its trees," he said. "There are a lot of layers and history. This is kind of where history meets contemporary living like an old house, but it now has vinyl siding and a satellite dish, but you can still feel the history behind it." A tree is a story told.....an outdoor tree museum.... Or take a walk A park A bridge A tree A river Love, Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ Dont miss your chance to WIN $10,000 and other great prizes from Microsoft Office Live http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/aub0540003042mrt/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 13:37:40 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: local musicians njc Last night I went to see Bob Burger play at McLoone's Pier House in Long Branch, NJ It a restaurant, banquet hall right on the boardwalk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean...beautiful view as the oceanside in windowed out on the ocean. I know she and her musican friends admire Jonis music. And for me it's easy to trace this admiration, even though no single track or her voice quality in any way quite resembles Joni, it's just the feeling, the flow, the taste. All of it. She is real. I like the thought about music being a survival kit. I think it has been that for me. In times that I've been really depressed music - albums - songs - or a single voice have been a great comfort for me. Last winter I had a period like that, and found grat comfort in both Joni's "Taming the tiger" as well as our own Sherelle Smith's "Do what you love" I think music can change your life, and in fact, music can make you live life. I guess some of you find this strong or offending, but it's true for me... I think of Joni, wnhen she worte A case of you. Such strong content. In an utterly elegant way she just puts it all in those two lines 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time... For me those lines has always been especially storng, but the whole song is so full of content, that my cuppeth runneth over... Well back to my thread, in popoular music today, well in norwegian popular music, we have the same issues like you have. Much music is just surface, and no content. When I listen to Siri Gjfres voice and her music, than I feel that she share some of her message to me, to all of humanity (parodon my strong word, this is definately a bit pathetic...) oh well, that just gives me hope, and hope is something I like to cherish and embrase, whenever found, especially when found in popular music. I really enjoyed it too even though he had an acid flashback and messed up the words. I don't care for Father's Day - it's what I refer to as a "Hallmark" holiday, like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and such. A concocted event to move product. If you love and appreciate someone, you should make it known to them everyday. I tell Nathan that with him for a son, every day is Father's Day for me. All that being said, I'm going over to my Pop's house in a minute to watch a movie and hang out, but I do that every so often anyway. Better buckle your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Reminds me of all the times people would request "The One I Love" by REM and dedicate it to boy/girlfriends. On the other hand, if ignorance is bliss, they are starting their lives together quite blissfully. Also a much better concert/recording IMO than the Jericho one which was reviewed here. Mostly Norwegian music Hi Oddmund, Thanks for the links - Siri sounds a lot like Sheryl Crow, both in style and vocal quality. Don't mean that as a dis since I like Sheryl. I love that cover of Woodstock - just tuba & voice - very creative. Woodstock has more than any other Joni song (including the franchise) opened itself up to a wide variety of treatments. And if you ever want to know what volume a Joni cover appears on, just click on the little blue square to the left of the title and it will give you additional information about it. Better buckle your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Now that you mention it, that is kind of funny... Then there was the man who walked by and said, "Do you know any Lynyrd Skynyrd? Play Freebird, that will liven up this party." I knew then that I was definitely in Buford, Georgia! At the expense of commercial success, Mitchell discussed environmental issues in her songs. "We've got to get ourselves back to the garden." I find it amusing that my eye-rolling friends start noticing Joni references in spite of themselves. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com http://www.sensibleshoes.vox.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 22:17:34 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: njc, Fathers' Day wishes acid? acid?
