I didn't meant to give the impression I was appalled. It's just not really the type of thing I would discuss. I'm not a prude but I didn't read anything like that about one of Joni's songs. She may well have sung to her vagina at some time. It was a bit of a fad for a while. Although not necessary, it was nice of you to apologise though. Apologies seem to come harder to some people than others. Even when I didn't intend to, I will always apologise if someone is offended by what I say if I have offended them. Albums that blew me away were; 1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John 2. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac 3. Filigree & Shadow - This Mortal Coil 4. Gone To Earth - David Sylvian 5. Miles of Aisles - Joni Hard to narrow it down to just 5 and these are not a list of my favourite albums but albums that made me sit up and take notice. Bolan Boogie T.Rex The first proper LP I ever bought, albeit a Best of. Until then, Id only ever dared to buy, or could afford, singles and K-Tel / Top of the Pops compilations. It was only after youd purchased a TOTP that you found out it wasnt the original artists versions, but some copycat sound-alike. Then came the real Hot Love, Get it On, Lifes a Gas, Ride a White Swan all on the same record. The sleeve alone with Bolans glittered face was a joy to behold. To this day, Jeepster is my all-time fave pop single. The Yes Album Yes Every track on the album was a revelation and sent me on a teenage-long album buying spree. In those days, you were making such a statement by owning a stretch of 12-inch vinyls, alphabetised de rigueur. Oh yes, mustnt forget the matching posters of Jon Anderson and band on the bedroom walls. Such a scene, posing round school clutching a Yes album, Tubular Bells or a Ziggy. Oh the days. Court and Spark Joni Mitchell Well. My progressive rock days were numbered as soon as the needle dropped on side one track one of this beauty - Love had indeed come to my door. With the possible exceptions of Hejira and Blood on the Tracks later, no other album has blown me away with such awe and bliss. Like so many others, I knew only Big Yellow Taxi and a cover of Woodstock, and wasnt even sure if Both Sides Now was hers or Judy Collinss. Down To You - oosh! It wasnt long before Id added her previous releases to my collection. I made an exception for Joni - she was spared alphabetisation and was honoured with a space set aside just for her. And of course, this led to everything and everyone that was associated with Joni - CSNY, JT et al Californiana. Well, not quite everything - I never did hear Pink Floyds The Wall, nor have heard Jonis bit to this day. Blood on the Tracks Bob Dylan What an introduction to album Dylan - the master at his most ridiculously sublime. This is THE album that led me to wanting to play guitar and write. So much for that idea. We had a long and happy relationship. Poses Rufus Wainwright For years Id been listening less and less to music, then one fine day in 2004, I heard a song. Poses single-handedly brought me back from musical indifference. An acquired taste (so Im told), Rufus, not unlike Joni, comes in for a lot of stick. Who cares? Long live the queen. It puzzles me why anyone would insist on being offended, even after apologies have been given and it has been made clear there was no intent to offend. I know, I know, we're only allowed five, but this album or one I picked up called The Jobim Songbook, should probably be on my list. I heard bossa nova as a child of course, and discovered at age 12 or so the song "Wave" on an album by someone named Michael Dees (?), and became obsessed with it. Then Garfunkel covered "The Waters of Life" on his otherwise undistinguished solo album, "Angel Clare" in the 1970s. Woodstock-Permanently borrowed this from my uncle and from it discovered Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Havens, Crosby Stills and Nash and Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" which still gives me chills! Knew about Sly and the Family Stone but got my first chance to hear them live. I think I also worried my parents by the amount of time I spent listening to it. My brothers say that they got their Rock influences from me listening to this and other Rock music. 2. Home To Myself-Melissa Manchester-I saw that someone else listed this album and while I never owned it, my college roomate was kind enough to let me listen to it as much as I wanted to. I found the song, "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore" which I found out was written (I think) by Randy Newman (please correct if wrong). I realized when I heard her sing this that I too truly wanted to be a singer. 3. Court and Spark-Joni Mitchell-This was the very first Joni Mitchell music I'd heard and I still am in awe as I fondly remember my first reaction to it. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! Hissing of Summer Lawns has to get an honorable mention in this thread because I heard both at the same time but Court and Spark spoke to my spirit because of Joni's brutal musical honesty about love and life. I've tried to follow her example and wrtie that way every since I first heard her. She truly changed my life. 4. Shadows and Light-When I was thinking about getting into music again after a 20 year hiatus, I talked to a friend who was a bass player in a local Wheeling, West Virginia band. He said, "If you are serious about this, you will go out and buy "Shadows and Light" by Joni Mitchell. So I ordered a tape of it the next day. All I had was a tape player at the time. Life was a bit tough then. I'll never forget the first time I heard Jaco Pastorius and Michael Brecker play together with Joni's vocals on "Black Crow". It was the first song I listened to. It was a jaw-dropping! Then to hear Pat Metheny do his guitar solo on "Amelia" made me speechless. I immediately "got" what my friend was trying to teach me; this is real music. This is the quality and caliber of music I should be doing. I never forgot the lesson. It's funny how things come around full circle. 5. Blue Obsession-Michael McDonald-The first time I heard "Obsession Blues" (which is going to be included on an upcoming Jeff Bridges movie soundtrack), I let out a sigh of relief and said "Thank you God!" While I love everything that Michael McDonald does (even if I can't always get the lyrics...smile), this song written by him and guitarist Bernie Chiaravalle struck home with me as a combination of Rock, Blues, and Soul and was perfect for the kind of emotion Michael always puts into a song. It's what I felt he should have always been doing. He does another hauntingly beautiful song up there called, "Where Would I Be Now" where Amy Holland McDonald sings backup vocals with him. There's a song up there about the Ebola plague called "Kikwit Town" where the lyrics just bring me to tears and the funkiest rendition of "Ain't That Peculiar" you'll ever hear. I've long wanted Michael McDonald to just "do his own thing" and he does on this CD. I can tell this CD was a labor of love for him though it didn't garner the attention I hoped it would. At the intimate Two River Theatre, after a lengthy acoustic set (including "I Am a Patriot," "Late for the Sky," "In the Shape of a Heart," and "The Pretender") Browne was joined by his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductor, Bruce Springsteen, for two songs: "Running on Empty," and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" The pair also performed together the previous night, even more low-key, when Springsteen was on hand for a _World Hunger Year_ (http://www.worldhungeryear.org/) benefit dinner honoring Browne and Jon Landau Management. For a little music at the end of the night, Springsteen joined in on Harry Chapin's "Circle," grabbing a guitar and strumming along. Sometimes I contemplate on trying him out and ordering something of his from the library but it just never happens (the desire is not strong enough but one day). But this is the first album I heard that actually taught me how to play acoustic guitar by listening over and over again. Never before did an album have a needle dropped in so many different places. (although Stairway to Heaven had many needle drops, too - no stairway allowed - lol) 2. After the Gold Rush - Neil Young. I was hooked instantly and became an avid fan. 3. Deja Vu - CSNY. Loved the harmonies. Plus this is the first time I ever saw Joni Mitchell's name - as a credit on Woodstock. 4. Ladies of the Canyon - Joni Mitchell. Court and Spark was actually the first album I owned, and though it is a great album, it didn't make me want to run out and buy her catalog. Ladies of the Canyon did, however. It made me think "This is what I have been looking for my entire life. What took me so long!" 5. American Thighs - Veruca Salt. American Thighs is in my car, at home, and at work. I'm totally addicted to the harmonies and fuzzy power chords, which motivated me to pick up my first electric guitar. Plus the girls in Veruca Salt are members of my generation... kinda rare in the types of music I listen to. Mia - who still isn't a great guitarist but loves what she loves. ps. The table is laden high, but the foundation is the Beatles' and Joni. My sweetest fare. And with a love like that You know I can't be bad! Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. YEAH! Wishing you all a tres bon weekend, Patti P. P.S. I just know it's going to be such a great time. I will be arriving there unbelievably early to make sure I get to stand on the floor front and center. It's the best for me or nothing at all! Rain or shine here I come. - -Monika NP: Word Game- Stephen Stills ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2007 00:42:15 EDT From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Re: 5 Albums That Changed Your Life In a message dated 6/16/2007 1:31:41 PM Eastern Daylight Time, loveuconn@hotmail.com writes: P.S.S.
