In a case of Joni, I daresay it's more valuable if it's revoked but not yet cancelled. Tee hee heee!!!! This is very exciting Joni news! "She's hit the big time!" And here I was yesterday, on digest, blathering away about trivialites like the war in Iraq and saving the planet, while something *really* important is happening in Jonimitchellville. This makes me remember the headful of quandary I had a few years ago in the Mansfield Post Office. I needed a 60 cent stamp and the nice clerk offered me two choices: a map of Canada, or a picture of Amelia. How to decide? I explained my dilemna to him and he was actually respectful and open. I asked him he knew and/or liked Joni and he said: "Sure. She's cool." (or something positive like that). I think I went with the Amelia stamp. Have a good day, everyjonibody! Love, Patti P. P.S. Hi Thea, I'm glad you are enjoying the thread! When you talk about "The Jungle Line" you just have to put it on don't you? I heartily agree with what you say about Joni's voice being both divine and sinister at the same time. That is so cool! I also love the story about your family friend growing poppies just for the beauty of the flowers. Glad to hear your boyfriend was blown away too! Sherelle Thea wrote: I must say, I am really enjoying this discussion of Rousseau and Jungle Line, though coming into it a bit late. Jungle Line is one of my favorites, and like Jack, I remember it being the first song on THOSL that I really loved. Then, of course, came the day when I listened and finally 'got' the whole album...I still don't know what changed. There is definitely something about the interaction of the guitar, drums, synth, and Joni's voice on Jungle Line that is both divine and weird in a sort of sinister way. I get what you're saying, Monika, about it being "ugly" in a deliberate way. Maybe creepy is a better word...certainly dark. It's jarring, and so are the lyrics. One of my favorite parts: There's a poppy wreath on a soldier's tomb there's a poppy snake in a dressing room Poppy poison, poppy tourniquet It slithers away on brass like mouthpiece spit I love how Joni lays out all of those images, with that duality and such vivid pictures - Rousseau-like, indeed. Also reminds me of a family friend who used to grow opium poppies in her yard simply for the beauty of the flowers. The authorities weren't too happy, but god! those blossoms were gorgeous! And maybe all the more so because of the darkness/poison behind the flowers. I made my boyfriend listen to Jungle Line on a train home once, and he was blown away, without having any context for the song. Many subsequent hours were spent in my room, listening to the entire album. I'll make a Joni fan out of him yet! It's a powerful song. Peace, Thea, up late in California with golden poppies outside her door, a different sort entirely! But still beautiful. Hi Warren, Well see, that's where I get a little confused. She starts the song "Rousseau walks on trumpet paths" and then there are the lines, "In a low cut blouse she brings a beer...Rousseau paints a jungle flower behind her ear..." and "with his hard edged eye and steady hands...he paints a cellar full of ferns and orchid vines...and hangs a moon above a five piece band...hangs it up above...The Jungle Line...". I can't help but think that she is referring to Rousseau in these lines. I see what you're saying about the song being about heroin, the plight of the black race (which she explores again in "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat") and Jazz music. I clearly hear these references but was not sure if they were images in paintings Rousseau once created or what. I agree with you though that the song is truly a wonderfu marriage of image and sound. I think that's why I like it so much as well. Sherelle Warren wrote: Nobody has said anything about the lyrics, what about the lyrics? I don't think the song is about Rousseau at all. Joni is only using him to set the mood. I think the adjectives flying around are dead on. I mean the lyrics are talking about the plight of the black race, jazz music, and heroin! I have always loved this song, it is the perfect marriage of images and sound. A little bit scary...but fun! It's very interesting to see all the "we all come from different sets of circumstance/reactions". I don't get HBO so I didn't see it. However, what Em just said reminds me of a true life experience. Remember all the hype about who shot JR in 1980? The TV show "Dallas"? It was all the talk. After months and months of hanging on that cliff (ha....Cliff Barnes, remember him?) it was finally the night to find out. Anticipation! I was at my brother-in-law's house with a bunch of people for a big Dallas party, and halfway through the show the power went out. For real! We went nuts. I immediately called the power company and they told me a car had hit a pole and knocked out the power. I cried to the lady: "But we were just about to find out who shot JR!" My bro-in-law went out to fiddle with his car radio and he actually found some static-y version (TIC! Who needs the static?) but it wasn't the same as seeing it on your TV set. For you younger ones, here is what that was all about. Someone may bring it up some day and then you will know what they are talking about (life is for learning on the jmdl!): "Who shot J.R.? was a mass media-manufactured open question in 1980. In the CBS television series Dallas, the character of J.R. Ewing, played by Larry Hagman, was shot by an unknown assailant in the final scene of its 1979-1980 season, which aired on March 21, 1980 and was entitled A House Divided. Viewers had to wait all summer, and most of the fall due to a Hollywood actors' strike, to learn whether J.R. would survive, and which of his many enemies was responsible. During the summer of 1980, the question "Who shot J.R.?" was asked in everyday conversations across America and worldwide. T-shirts printed with such references as "Who Shot J.R.?" and "I Shot J.R.!" became common over the summer. Ultimately, the person who pulled the trigger was revealed to be the character of Kristin Shepard (played by Mary Crosby) in the "Who Done It?" episode which aired on November 21, 1980. Kristin was J.R.'s scheming sister-in-law and mistress, who shot him in a fit of anger. It was, at the time, the highest rated television episode in US history. It had a Nielsen rating of 53.3 and a 76% share, and it was estimated that 83,000,000 people watched the episode. [1]. The previous record for a TV episode, not counting the final installment of the miniseries Roots (TV miniseries), had been the 1967 finale for The Fugitive. "Who Shot J.R.?" now sits second on the list, beaten in 1983 by the final episode of M*A*S*H, but still remains the highest rated non-finale episode of a TV series by a wide margin. The great success of this 1980 stunt helped usher in the practice of ending a television season with a cliffhanger." -- Wikipedia (the first google hit I had). I never watched the Sopranos but we watched Carnivale on DVD. I thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out. Yeah, so they leave you with the Rev whatzizname not really being dead after all. That kind of stuff happens all the time in horror or supernatural-type movies. But what would/could possibly happen next that wouldn't simply be a rehash of the same stuff that had already happened in the first and second seasons? I loved the first season, but got a bit tired of it about halfway through the second season. Sometimes it's best to quit when you're ahead. There were a lot of unanswered questions, but often the answers to those questions prove disappointing. Or maybe I've just got a really short attention span. I was never interested in watching the Sopranos. In the beginning we didn't get the channel it was on. I'm not sure if we have HBO here or not. It was probably on some other pay-per-view type of station that we didn't have. We might even have it now, because I signed up for satellite a few years ago. But I have no idea what stations we actually have and which we don't. How pathetic is that? Why am I paying for this? I could probably get by with basic cable, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Often it's just the same stuff on a bunch of channels but there's the time-shifting option of watching the Vancouver or Edmonton station if I missed something on the Toronto one. I've heard it's good, but I'm not really interested in watching something about gangsters.
