I must say, I am really enjoying this discussion of Rousseau and Jungle Line, though coming into it a bit late. Jungle Line is one of my favorites, and like Jack, I remember it being the first song on THOSL that I really loved. Then, of course, came the day when I listened and finally 'got' the whole album...I still don't know what changed. There is definitely something about the interaction of the guitar, drums, synth, and Joni's voice on Jungle Line that is both divine and weird in a sort of sinister way. I get what you're saying, Monika, about it being "ugly" in a deliberate way. Maybe creepy is a better word...certainly dark. It's jarring, and so are the lyrics. One of my favorite parts: There's a poppy wreath on a soldier's tomb there's a poppy snake in a dressing room Poppy poison, poppy tourniquet It slithers away on brass like mouthpiece spit I love how Joni lays out all of those images, with that duality and such vivid pictures - Rousseau-like, indeed. Also reminds me of a family friend who used to grow opium poppies in her yard simply for the beauty of the flowers. The authorities weren't too happy, but god! those blossoms were gorgeous! And maybe all the more so because of the darkness/poison behind the flowers. I made my boyfriend listen to Jungle Line on a train home once, and he was blown away, without having any context for the song. Many subsequent hours were spent in my room, listening to the entire album. I'll make a Joni fan out of him yet! It's a powerful song. Peace, Thea, up late in California with golden poppies outside her door, a different sort entirely! But still beautiful. Grabster" Subject: Re: Last Sopranos (spoiler) sort of a little jc As a long time Sopranos fan, I thought the ending made a lot of sense in the context of the show and its rejection of traditional narrative. In the past, the gun they show you in the first act goes off in the second, and by curtain call everything is wrapped up in a tidy package- crime does not pay, good triumphs over evil, and the bad are punished. In the TV world of The Sopranos, as in real life, none of these things are true. The gun they show you may not get fired, things rare not wrapped up in a tidy package... crime pays pretty well, evil sometimes triumphs over good, and in general everyone gets punished, sometimes by their own inner demons. The final sequence was riveting, as creator David Chase built up the suspense to a boiling point. As Tony and family arrived at the diner, you kept waiting for something to happen. As each stranger walked in, you had to wonder if they were hit men. Apparently, one of the customers was someone Tony had ripped off in a previous episode... literally ruining the man's life, taking all his assets and forcing him into bankruptcy, to pay off gambling debts. The choice of music was brilliant- the Journey song associated with the White Sox victory in the World Series- both a suggestion of Tony's banal tastes and the audience's need for a "victory" at the show's finish line. As Meadow tried and failed time after time to parallel park, then ran across the street, we wondered if she would be hit by a car. Or would the diner explode in a fireball just before she entered? The final scene, shown from Tony's point of view, reflects how paranoid he must be, not knowing when or where or how someone might do him in, just as Phil Leotardo was killed earlier in the episode, right after telling his grandkids to "wave bye-bye." And, just as Tony and Bobby had discussed in a previous episode, when it happens you never see it coming. But what happened here was the audience got "whacked," which made everyone wonder whether the cable service had gone out at a critical moment. The audience and the show's creators made The Sopranos into a kind of hyper-reality, where, despite everyone knowing this is fiction, we want so bad to give these characters a real life of their own. For the rest of his life, the real James Gandolfini will be Tony Soprano to most of us. So, what better ending than whacking the audience? In the show's narrative, their lives go on- or don't, as we don't know what happens after things black out. We just don't get to watch any longer. There are lots of loose ends- an 80-90% chance Tony gets indicted for dumping toxic waste, Junior's stash still not found, etc. etc., but in real life there are always the loose ends. What other ending would have made sense? Other endings would have been derided as cliches- Tony getting killed in a bloodbath of violence. So they had the bloodbath the previous week, complete with a Scorsese-like homage in the hobby shop. The other plausible ending- Tony in witness protection- would have been criticized as a ripoff of Goodfellas, if they had ended the show with Tony picking up his newspaper and the audience seeing he's now living in some strange city. Chase and Co. are being criticized for leaving things open to a possible future movie. Maybe there will be such a movie, maybe not. The audience wants more Sopranos, but putting a film together would be a difficult undertaking. I wouldn't guarantee it will happen. It will take some time before it could happen, as the various principals are going to veer off in many different directions in an attempt to avoid being typecast in their Sopranos roles. Right now, all the pressure is going to keep them apart for the foreseeable future. I repeat, what ending did people want to see, and why would it be better than the one we do have? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 08:11:56 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Jonatha Brooke etc Greetings all, Just went to hear Jonatha Brooke last night with her wonderful band and she was as fabulous as ever. The turnout was pitiful even for a Monday night but Jonatha got into it, like doing a house concert and was very chatty. She really is of the most interesting and sophisticated of the Joni Mitchell offshoots and her alternate guitar tunings make Joni's seem simplistic. She does songs in alt tunings with DOUBLE capos and is able to find chords that no guitarist has ever used....very sweet. And her voice was nuance perfect the whole night. P.S the thread about The Jungle Line prompts me to reiterate something I discovered when remastering HOSL: I had always assumed Joni had hired the Burundi drummers and recorded them but I could hear the vinyl surface noise crackling throughout the song, at low level to be sure but brought out by the mastering tools, which revealed that she had used an LP of the drummers, maybe from the Library of Congress archives, and made up a song over it. On seven continents, millions of people will gather for Al Gore's Live Earth concerts to stop the climate crisis. Can you host a party that night for folks in Mansfield Center? We want MoveOn members everywhere to have front row seats for this historic event, so we're throwing a "Party for the Planet." We'll hear a special message from Al Gore, tune in to the concerts, and see the presidential candidates answering your questions on the climate crisis (see below to vote on which questions they answer). We'll invite the guestsall you need is a TV, a DVD player, and a space where people can gather. Can you share your living room on Saturday evening, July 7th and be part of Live Earth?" I know you and Marianne and I would vote for him....anyone else? I read a few snippets from his new book "The Assault on Reason" and it is so refreshing and HONEST and hopeful. But that's just my opinion. Here is a little of what he says on Amazon: "Never has it been more vital for us to face the reality of our long-term challenges, from the climate crisis to the war in Iraq to the deficits and health and social welfare. Today, reason is under assault by forces using sophisticated techniques such as propaganda, psychology, and electronic mass media. Yet, democracy's advocates are beginning to use their own sophisticated techniques: the Internet, online organizing, blogs, and wikis. Although the challenges we face are great, I am more confident than ever before that democracy will prevail and that the American people are rising to the challenge of reinvigorating self-government. It is my great hope that those who read my book will choose to become part of a new movement to rekindle the true spirit of America." Yeah! Power to the people! Could he be the leader Neil and the rest of us are looking for? (NPIMH: Looking for a Leader) We need somebody with SMARTS. I don't know, it's too early to say, and you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm hoping he will jump into the race after the other boxers in the rings knock each other around. (TIC! Oh come let's run from this ring we're in Where the Christians clap and the Germans grin Saying let them lose, crying let them win Oh make them both confess I'm with Doris Kearns Goodwin who recently said (I'm paraphrasing) that Gore really took a bruising in the 2000 election, but that adversity like that can build real character and "life is for learning" kind of growth and now he's smarter and stronger than ever. She quoted Hemingway (and this is one of my faves): "Life breaks us all. And some of us grow stronger in the broken places." A few years ago I might have said: "Nah. He already lost once. We don't need a retread." I have since changed my mind. (I can do that, can't I? It's a woman's perogative, and as you know, "a woman must have everything!" ) Yikes, I really wanted to write about Jungle Line on this lunch hour, but I got pulled into this after that Party for the Planet announcement. A bientot! Please forgive all errors and inaccuracies...no time to proofread, racing away..... Love, Patti P. Al Gore certainly is winning over people around the world including Australia. He toured here for the opening of the film and it was a huge success. He has a commanding personality and was a favourite on the talk shows on TV. If someone cares this much about the planet, has the right balance of domestic issues and global perspective, he deserves to win the Presidency. I'd vote for him for World President. He's a Democrat, right? I'm a Democrat voter in this country even though they are a minor party. This is a wonderful project, taking in 9 cities. I can't wait to see what Shanghai and Istanbul comes up with. It would have been even better if more cities were involved like, Toronto, Milan, Barcelona, Paris, Moscow and Los Angeles. Apparently Tokyo is doing two shows at two different venues. As you said, much of Joni's album has environmental themes, it would have been the perfect showcase to debut the album. I believe she is a Democrat voter too, right? Something like this is bound to have some surprise appearances so, who knows? She may turn up after all at the New York show. Nobody has said anything about the lyrics, what about the lyrics? I don't think the song is about Rousseau at all. Joni is only using him to set the mood. I think the adjectives flying around are dead on. I mean the lyrics are talking about the plight of the black race, jazz music, and heroin! I have always loved this song, it is the perfect marriage of images and sound. A little bit scary...but fun! There is simply no comparison with the last ep of The Sopranos. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 17:35:21 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Last Sopranos (spoiler) njc > I repeat, what ending did people want to see, and why would it be > better than the one we do have? I didn't have any certain ending in mind...the writer's job was to surprise me...and in a sense they did, but it felt like a cop-out, a Seinfeldian ending that's not an ending. Like they ran out of time and someone just came in with a pair of scissors and cut the film. You are right about the build up of suspense, and as an audience we have a Pavlovian response that something is going to happen, and when nothing does, it's almost like they are saying-'see, it's only a movie' which makes the whole exercise seem self conscious and awkward, and even a little amateurish. I do like your perspective on it, and glad it worked for you. I have no idea how the public in general responded to it, but I can only think this must be a set-up for Sopranos II.
