I was enchanted by the album and Mandy. When we broke up I asked her to put on Trouble Child as it seemed a fitting closer. Then I was loaned FTR and absorbed every note through a million listenings. It's still up there in my top two with Hejira. But the first Joni I actually owned was HOSL which my mom read a review of the week it was released and gave it to me for my birthday. I was intrigued by it but didn't love it for a while as I was preoccupied with jazz fusion bands who could play fast complicated stuff, which is what I thought was cool as an emerging drummer. As the years piled on and my tastes mellowed and I learned about my own songwriting it became obvious that Joni was the template for how to write a perfect song. And here we are today about to do another full-on Joni concert, opening with a choral S&L in all its HOSL wierdness (not the gospel type arrangement the Persuasions did). It's not like no one cared about me but sometimes it just doesn't help to have friends, especially if they are good friends and you can't lie to them and say that all is well when nothing that matters is really well. And when you tell them what is wrong they don't agree because THEY think you are going to succeed and THEY think the guy is an unworthy arsehole. So I thought, what can I do? I reckoned that if I sat down and listened carefully to some Joni then maybe I'd find something. She got me through a really bad day and made it end up in a really good way. That is how I ended up here, I thought, there has got to be something down that road. And there really was... ;-) Anyway, I of course moved out of my little cold room and left my friend with a HUGE electricity bill because I had been plugging my electric heater in all day. I'd say that was a good move. I did, as you know, submit my diss, and I guess I'll find a job somewhere. As for the guy, well, its all very sad, but I'd be nothing if I didn't have love, right? I wonder where I had been if I had not had you jonipeople to talk to, and meet up with? I used to listen to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on the radio and heard "Help Me," which was too sophisticated for my young ears, and "Free Man in Paris," which annoyed me because she says "I was a free man" and she was a girl! I listened to FM rock radio a lot and really liked "In France They Kiss on Main Street," but not enough to buy the album. I was fascinated by C&S and Hissing as album titles, cause I would hear them when Casey announced the Top Selling albums of the week. Ditto with Miles of Aisles. I also liked the MOA "Big Yellow Taxi" and "You Turn me On," which were often played on FM rock radio. After Hejira, rock radio dropped Joni and I lost all awareness of her. Then in the early 90s,a friend told me that she was his favorite artist. I remember my dad had found a vinyl Ladies of the Canyon in the garbage a few months earlier, which he gave me, so I spun it. I immediately became fascinated by it and wondered why a pop music connoisseur like me was unaware of gems such as "Morning Morgantown," "For Free," and "Conversation." I then ordered the MOA CD off Columbia House record club's Bargain Bin for four bucks. Became obsessed with that as well. So much so, that I became determined to buy everything she ever issued on CD, which I promptly did. I fell in love with one after the other. First Hissing, then C&S (fondly remembered from youth), then the new at the time Turbulent Indigo, then Hejira, which the record store owner said was one of his faves ever and became mine too.....then the earlier ones, then Blue, For theRoses, Don Juan and finally the remainder of the Geffen years. I even loved Dog Eat Dog and liked Chalk Mark very much. The only one that leaves me a little cold is Wild Things, though I love Chinese Cafi. In 94, I got in contact with Wally and Les and joined this list. In 97 I began writing for sonicnet/vhi and had many opportunities to review Joni shows such as Stormy Weather (which I flew to LA for), A Day in the Garden, where I met the very nice Sue McNamara who represented this list, a Dylan/Joni MSG show, orchestral Joni at Radio City, and the TNT Joni tribute. I waited with bated breath for TTT, which I was slightly disappointed with. I felt I already knew the best songs from the Canada show bootleg CD which featured "Facelift" and "Crazy Cries of Love." I was also disappointed with its sales. I really liked BSN, but was less excited with Travelogue, though I love some tracks. Also disappointed she chose to repackage some of the material with the relatively recent theme albums, but kinda understand wanting to target potential new fans in a different way. I'm a huge fan still and am VERY excited for the new album. Whenever anyone mentions the best artists of all time, I always defend Joni. I was just emailing Oddmund about my fascination for Scandinavian music and how the starkness and elegiac beauty speak to me in ways too compelling to articulate properly. My former housemate is from Bergen, Norway and she told me that Sondre is from Bergen and is huge not only in Norway but in Scandinavia as well. I have to say that that fame even extends up to the Philippines where I first 'discovered' his music. A lot of people were confused about the film, and I never posted this, but I remember thinking, no, that film is exactly how it is: clues everywhere, but whenever you follow the lead, no matter how obvious it may seem, it leads you nowhere. Mom! Joni Mitchell is playing!!! So, I tried to find a speaker in the ceiling to get under but don't hear anything from it. Inbetween songs... I thought what he heard had gone away never to be heard by me. He goes off, I get my coffee (soy latte decaf grande with 2 pumps of hazelnut) and then it comes on... the next song on the CD: Ladies of the Canyon sung by Annie Lennox, and it blew me away!!! He had heard Blue and recognized it as a Joni song, my intelligent 9 year old. How many kids his age would know this and be excited about it I have to wonder? I listen; they absorb. I don't usually like Joni covers unless I'm at a jonifest, but this... I didn't know it was the Tribute CD until I asked the lady at the Starbuck's counter, and she called the music people and told me. I sat down to drink my coffee, but I couldn't stay seated. So, me and my coffee danced back to the music area singing Ladies of the Canyon as if the coffee was laced. By the time I got back to the CD section, Magdalene Laundries was on. I asked to see the CD, and the lady said pointed saying there is more Emmylou Harris over there, and I said that's okay, NO, I'm big into Joni and I want the CD of Joni songs that's playing... NOW! Give it to me! Grabbing it out of her hand the hunk of gold it is. The Boho Dance. All of my 3 kids asked, who is singing that? A Case of You... Prince! Way cool! Help Me... k.d. lang. Help ME! Whilst the mandolin is an instrument I had never seriously played (my brother kills on it) I did eventually buy a Mid Missouri. The staff at Mandolin Bros were the greatest. I spent about 3/4 hour with their technicians Leroy and Rocco. I took about a dozen images in the store and walked out with really nice mandolin. Had my photo taken in the big chair surrounded by guitars. What a shopping experience. When they say it is one best guitar shops in the world they ain't kidding. It was a long way from home (Sydney Australia) but I'll be going back again.
