One of our own, Mark in Sydney, has just revealed to me in our email correspondence that he is in dire financial straits after losing his job several months ago. His house and car are in real danger of repossession in a couple of weeks and we can probably all imagine the hardship that would be for any of us. I have recently been asking him to do some design work for me as he is a first rate graphic designer (though not yet officially in a professional capacity). He has done two CD covers, a business card. a logo and a poster for our upcoming "Joni" concert. All of them have been beautiful, creative and pro in every way. You already have seen his Joni wallpapers. My request is this: if you have any graphic design needs-- invitations, business cards, logos, CD artwork, brochures etc-- please contact Mark first (mark-leon@iinet.net.au) about doing the work. It can all be done electronically so geographical proximity is irrelevant. He would never make this request himself as he is too modest about his talents but I want to personally endorse his excellent work and see him get on his feet again. I left off NJC in order to reach the most people possible; not proper form I realize... thank you all Dave Blackburn p.s our next big all-Joni concert is July 21st in Fallbrook, CA, between San Diego, Riverside and L.A if anyone could see their way to coming down for the show as guests of honor! Thanks for that tip, Bob. I love the library and was there just two weeks ago. Since my book (now finished) is due June 12, I have to return by at least that date, and I won't have any excuse not to ask them for info! : ) And I know what you mean about trying and needing to achieve that balance. But anyway...you mentioned the flat tax...there are several candidates on the conservative side who are proponents ..but they have no chance of winning. And how serious would they be anyway about really seeing...leading the bandwagon....on getting a major overhaul of tax codes in this country? The flat tax...imo ..is a beautiful thing....easy..fair.... But bureaucrats don't love easy things. Didn't you know they have fetishes about reams of paper? The late Paul Tsongas ...a democrat... was a flat tax guy. The "Fair Tax" ideal is another beautiful thing....basically the more you consume the more you pay. The IRS would become history. Revenue goes to the state you reside in.....you want a yacht....go for it..but you will pay a high price for that consumption. I can't afford a yacht... but I'm not helping to pay either for the guy who can afford the yacht. The "Fair Tax" is unambiguous. Nothing hidden...no value added...the straight deal. I tell you ....if any civic leader or politician out there would make tax overhauling his baby... truly have the conviction....the power of persuasion....the fire in his or her belly about radically changing the way we pay taxes in this country....the world would be their oyster. Callin' out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat? Summer's here and the time is right for prayin' in the street. Prayin' in Chicago (prayin' in the street) (Hi Jack!) Down in New Orleans (prayin' in the street) (Hi Paz y amigos!) In New York City (Hi Patrick and Kay and you know....) Can't forget the motor city (c'mon Gary Z and Cassy!) And down in DC (Sherelle!) And you know there may be lots more in LA. Everyone up on the peace train! I will do it 9 p.m. EST daily. That's a promise that I made. KATE: "Thanks for all the deep passion about peace Patti." P: You're very welcome, but I'm really just "The biggest fool that ever hit the big time and all I gotta do is act naturally!" K: " I watched the video & cried. My son in law has recently left the army to start a new career (he has a wife & 4 kids). He thought he'd be a career army guy (went in before Bush was in office) but this war & his time in Iraq changed his mind about a lot of things he once supported. We celebrate that he is safe." P: I'll say! Thank God he could get out. I was just talking to a woman whose son is still in the Army. He survived Iraq (although two of his buddies did not -- she pointed them out in the group photo, saying: "This one is dead. And so is this one.") but now he has, in my opinion, an possibly more morally reprehensible job. He's a recruiter. And guess what? If he doesn't meet his quota for the week, they make him work weekends, which means he doesn't get to see his 3 kids. No pressure there, eh? Pro-family administration, you know? (And people wonder why I would not let my son within MILES of aisles of a professional recruiter! There's no way in hell's the hippest way to go that any recruiter is getting near MY baby lions! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!) I have another little military madness story. (Graham TIC! That reminds me - -- when he sang Military Madness last year he changed the words to "I hope George Bush discovers, what's driving the people wild..." and the crowd went WILD!) Anyway, this same woman's son was visited in Iraq by our state's only Republican congressman. It was all cheery, happy clappy, rah rah rah, and the congressman took pictures and said he would send them all copies (and/or their families, I can't remember exactly). Time went by and no pictures, so this woman called his office to ask about the pictures. No reply. A few weeks later she called again (politely, of course), and still no reply. Shortly after that she heard from her son and he BEGGED her to PLEASE leave the congressman alone. One of his superiors heard about it and he got in trouble. Can you believe that? It's not like she was calling to protest the war or anything, she only wanted the freakin' photos of HER SON THAT THIS MAN PUT IN HARM'S WAY that they were promised. (Sorry for yelling but that pisses me off big time.) She shared these stories with me as she was cutting my hair, the afternoon of last week's demonstration. I was telling her all about it, and she was understanding, and rather wistful. She told me these things I'm telling you now Watched them buckle up In my brow She was explaining why she could not join in the peace movement. It might hurt her son. Oh, my aching back. Support the troops, how? But it really was a wonderful conversation. A rich exchange. We saw where each other was coming from, and why we do what we do. It wasn't like the angry confrontation of that morning with one side against the other. Now that I think about it, isn't that what diplomacy is? Sitting down and trying to see eye-to-eye, and reaching understanding? But our Decider won't do that with that axis of evil out there. Yeah, cuz he's a uniter, not a divider, right? (Sorry, I'm not usually so bitter and sarcastic. This administration just brings out the worst in me.) K: "I understand how Cindy feels. She needs to have a peaceful life herself." P: Yes. I feel so much for her. Hey, I just had an idea! She spent all of her own money on her peace activities. She lost a lot of money before she quit this crazy scene. I think I'm going to send her a check to buy her some peace and quiet, maybe some tea and lemonade to sip in the shade as she tries to relax. It would be a message of gratitude for lighting my candle from her giant torch. She has done so much for the cause. K: "It is amazing how much hatred, those who stand for peace, can attract. Maybe our collective prayers are the better option." P: Amazing is right. Defies logic, doesn't it? Look what they did to the Prince of Peace! Maybe hatred, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder? That's the only way I can make sense of it. Nice having this conversation with you! Although I gave my permission to Dave Blackburn to reveal my situation to the list, I find now that I am highly embarrassed for so many people to know my financial circumstances. I'm very sorry that this is not Joni related. I'm a bit of a stickler for Joni content and am on the Joni-only digest. I kind of regret giving my permission now but very much appreciate Dave's kindness and concern. The situation may not be as dire as it has been now. I have had difficulty in getting back into work for about 6 months now which, is ironic with the government constantly patting itself on the back because of the lowest unemployment rate in 80 years or something (now at about 5% nationally). I am applying for an early release of my superannuation. They tell me that I am eligible. This should take care of the immediate problems. Of course, I would love any paid graphic design work that comes my way. I am not qualified and have just taught myself the software. The rest is just purely my imagination. Dave has given me my first ever paid graphic design work for the poster for his upcoming show. I urge anyone who can get to Fallbrook, California to go see this show. I only wish I could. A trip to California seems like a lifetime away but a little piece of me will be there - my artwork. I wish him and his beautiful wife the best. Nobody knew. What dummies!!!!! Sheesh! SPOILER ALERT: If you want to watch the show later and don't want to know who won, close your eyes and scroll down. (You can close your eyes, it's all right.) They are great kids, I don't know who loves who more, but I sure do look forward to Fridays when I go in there and read. I try to implement *interactive* reading and involve them in the books; what's going to happen next, etc. I draw on my theater experience and ham it up, of course, using a bunch of different voices. I know I've done a good job when they ask me to 'read it again'. Last Friday a girl told me that a book was 'too short' which I thought was pretty cool. It comes down to the old "give a man a fish" analogy...if I can turn them on to reading books early on, it can give them a leg up when they start kindegarten. SC has a big literacy problem as you can probably imagine. Truth is, I LOVE reading out loud to kids so my motivations are a little selfish too. I also participated in the making of a video for Lapsits that they're going to use for promotion and fundraising. Maybe they'll put it on the website; if so, I'll let you know. Thanks for asking. I don't feel like I do enough but I try and do what I can. **** That's wonderful, Bob. I'm sure you are really good at it. There's a wide world of noble causes. And now this child comes out to wonder: what do other jmdlers volunteer for? (NPIMH: Volunteers of America/JoniMitchellville) When my boys were younger I did lots of work for their hockey association: president and/or treasurer for 15 years. One day I had checks and rosters and stuff spread all over the kitchen table and Michael asked: "How much do you get paid for doing that?" I said: "Nothing." The look on his face! Then he asked: "What do Scott and Jerry (his coaches) get paid?" I gave him the same answer. Well, the years spin by and now the boy is twenty-something, and guess what he does? He coaches youth hockey, real good, for free! Now that I have time on my hands and no childs to raise, I have two main volunteer activities: 1. I belong to the Ministry of Caring at my old church (I say old because I had to stop going there when it got too right wing. "And all these peace activists. Who are they to judge?" HUH?). I visit the sick and elderly and bring them Communion, and conversation and comfort.... and laughs, lots of laughs. I love it. For 6 years I have been visiting Irene (98) and Edna (99 1/2). Both these ladies have so much wisdom of the ages. Sadly Irene passed away in January. I miss her. I'll never forget the last time I saw her: she wasn't sick or anything, and I didn't know it was our last visit. The very last thing she said as I went out the door was: "Patti?" I said, "Yes, Irene?" She said: "Be happy." I still see Edna every Sunday and it's great: free hugs that we both need! 2. I'm a "facilitator" in the UConn Connects program, where I mentor/cheerlead 2 or 3 students a semester who are on academic probabation. The facilitators have monthly luncheons/workshops where we share ideas and stories and our own areas of expertise. You get to meet and know some really nice people. And it's fun to work with the kids: keeps you young! Only once in 10 years did I have a student I couldn't click with. He was snotty from the beginning. When I called to explain who I was, that I was there to be his "friend", he said, coldly: "I have plenty of friends". Alrighty then! Then we met and it was during the 2000 presidential election and ummm, well, he was not "hooray for our side". He was chairman of his town's "Elect Bush" committee and we parted ways. He then went on to become the become the youngest-ever elected state rep, as a Republican. I can take no credit whatsover for his success....LOL! Oh yeah, and then sometimes I work for anti-war Senate candidates, and do a little peace promotion stuff on the side. Just a little! And sometimes the causes overlap: I brought Irene and Edna absentee ballots. (No coercion, I swear!) Does anyone put some time into ecology or anything? Curate covers for a discussion list? Maintain an awesome website for grateful fans? (Hi Les!) Love, Patti P. NPOMTV: The Spelling Bee thing. Hey, Bob, maybe one of your kids will make it on to that someday! What is that saying?
