When I saw Marion's challenge, I actually said: "Ich kann nicht wahlen!' -- right out loud! I enjoy reading everyone's choices, but I truly cannot pick. Again and again the same situation! I get crazy with too much choice. Besides, I'm working on another list when I have time on my hands -- a silly JMOCDed top ten list for Catherine, Monika, and Marianne. Bon dimanche! A few years ago, one of my nephews said he'd be interested in hearing some Joni music, so I put together a collection. I think I picked two from each album - it wasn't easy! If I did it again, many of my picks might be very different. Joni nails it again! In recent years, this song has always made me think of an annual event at my sons' former high school put on by the Social Justice Club. I can't remember all of the details, but it goes something like this: You pay $12 and there are three different meals served. You are a given a card to get your dinner. Depending on the number or letter on the card (in the cookie I read), you end up with: 1. a full course dinner (meat, potatoes, vegetable, dessert) with all the trimmings (a sweeter fare) 2. beans and rice and a tiny dessert 3. water and rice (Back in the banquet line Angry young people crying....) I heard a kid exclaim: "No fair! I paid twelve bucks for water and rice?" Good learning experience for everyone. My Joni beret is off to the teacher who plans this annual event. She is teaching the children well. And all of the money raised goes to a wide world of noble causes. I should call her and tell her to play "Banquet" during the next dinner. Simon is set to become the first recipient of the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, named in honor of George and Ira Gershwin. As the Mark Twain Prize has done for American humor, the annual Gershwin Prize will honor an American composer or performer "whose lifetime contributions exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins," the library says. The same producers who originated the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for Humor in 1998 have been working to establish a popular-music corollary since 2000. Simon will receive the prize in an invitation-only ceremony Tuesday in the library's Great Hall, followed by a gala concert Wednesday at the Warner Theatre. Garfunkel, with whom Simon has had an off-and-on-and-off-and-on relationship for almost 60 years, will be there, along with such collaborators as the Dixie Hummingbirds, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Philip Glass (who 15 years ago argued that one had to look to Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin to find talent comparable to Simon's), as well as Stevie Wonder, Yolanda Adams, Alison Krauss, Stephen Marley and James Taylor. Pals Bob Costas and Lorne Michaels will serve as presenters, along with former poet laureate Billy Collins. The concert will be recorded and broadcast June 27 on PBS." Mark your calendars, red ribbon runners! The whole article is here: http://www.courant.com/entertainment/music/hc-simon.artmay20,0,6338997.story I thought it was very interesting. And another, on his thoughts on the the songwriting process: http://www.courant.com/entertainment/music/hc-simonlyrics.artmay20,0,1612430.story First paragraph from that one, to reel you in: "For Paul Simon, songwriting has always been a meld of craft and inspiration, intellect and emotion, a process of endless revising, rewriting, arranging and production in pursuit of a more perfect union of lyric, melody and rhythm - all to ensure that his songs do not come back and haunt him "in shades of mediocrity."" Like I said before, I can't judge the newer BSN but I can say this. You're absolutely right that the orchestral BSN has a lifetime of experience behind it which helps project its meaning. It fits, doesn't it? As for the '69 version, well that has something interesting about it too. Joni first wrote that, what? When she was 21 or so I believe I have read? Are you really experience at 21? Do you really know all that much about life and love or even are able to say you don't know anything at all about them? Yes and no I'd say. I don't know if you know much or don't know much about life but at 21 you DO THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING. Believe me when I say that. I know. It's such an interesting age and period in your life.
