The interview was recorded just days after her Painting with Words concert when Graham Nash presented her with the R&R Hall of Fame award in a garbage bag (and the top piece broken!). She was also cover girl for WORD magazine two months ago. By the way, have you guys checked out the clips of Joni on the Jonny Cash show (c. 1972?) on Youtube. There was some great stuff there (like Joni jamming in studio with Herbie Hancock and others, doing Ol' Furry and Hejira, and a live version of Borderline), but most of it has been removed alas. The Jonny Cash stuff was only put up recently. Also check out her great vocal for Goodbye Blue Sky (Pink Floyd's THe Wall live in Berlin) - and you can also see her sneak onto Bob Dylan's set with Van Morrison to have a go at singing I Shall Be Released and laugh her way through it, during the Van-Joni-Dylan tour of the late 1990s. There was an early version of Little Green (live), too - with a very different melody to lines 3&4, but that was taken off ages ago (why do they do that?). But there's still an early live version of My Old Man with one verse not yet written. Anyway, check out what's there. RR ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 May 2007 20:25:12 +0200 (CEST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: Melinda Doolittle NJC Hi Jerry, I am familiar with the top 12 line-ups in previous years in AI but this is the first year that I really followed it up week after week. It is good entertainment and good TV and one that keeps me abreast with pop culture in that area. My favorite in the top 12 was voted a long time ago (Stephanie Edwards) but ever since Doolittle wowed everyone (including herself) with "I'm A Woman", "My Funny Valentine" and reached climatic crescendo after crescendo every week, I became an obssessive fan of hers. No apologies. I thought her best performance would have to be the week that showcased AI at its manipulative best -- Idol Gives Back -- where Melinda, armed with nothing but a vocal prowess that makes her above and beyond this rigmarole of a reality show, sang a soaring, gospel-tinged, hair-inducing "There Will Come A Day". The joy you can see from her performance, and the fervour that comes from singing such a jubilee made my hair stand. And I didn't even know Faith Hill sang that song as a post 9/11 homage. Then even the Bee Gees Night that had everyone say that she did not have a "wow" factor (or in Jonispeak, an "awk factor"), I thought her subtlety and finesse in rendering "Love You Inside and Out" was unfairly judged even by her most vocal and loyal of supporters -- the acerbic Simon Cowell. And how can we be not shocked by her elimination last night when she was first among equals in performance the previous night? But then I never really bought the "this is a singing competition" dreck since this reality show is equal parts personality and showmanship and medium-scale public pandering . I did not want Melinda to win the title but her graceful and polished exit last night will probably net her more admirers and fans than if she wins the crown. She definitely ended on a high note and will be remembered just like that NC dude whose name escapes me at the moment and who was also prematurely eliminated lastyear, and who, I heard, sold more albums than anyone from his peers. Sorry for rambling. I often wondered what wonders Melinda can do to "BLue Motel Room" or "Man From Mars". I think everyone who's been watching the show was shocked last night -- but if you consider the oddness of last night's show, I think they were prepping the viewers for it. Ryan Seacrest went to a commercial break, saying next up was "Melinda goes home." Okay, it segued into her visit to Nashville. But then they had Melinda stand alone on stage, acting as if her fate was to be announced, only to go to break again -- and then eventually start the real results process again, beginning with Jordin. Nonetheless, when the verdict was announced, my mouth dropped open and stayed that way for at least a minute. Then I was just annoyed. However, I don't think this is the last we'll see of Melinda Doolittle. She's an amazing singer. I hope she records a CD that includes ... well, just about everything she's sang over the last two episodes. (http://www.kcsm.org/jazz91.html ) There was a membership drive going on, and much banter about that, including a comment by DJ Alicia Clancy that the station plays "chunky" jazz. I liked that. So I was tooling down the freeway and realized that I was singing the words (in my head) to the song that was playing. After a few moments I realized the song was "Solid Love." I thought to myself, "This has to be David Lahm ..." although I have to admit to not having listened to "Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell" for awhile now (or much else from my CD collection, for that matter). Anyway, I was shortly pleased to hear DJ Alicia announce that we had just heard some Joni Mitchell, by way of David Lahm, and she named his 1999 album and also mentioned "More Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell" (2000). Before the segment ended, she mentioned "Jazz Takes ..." once again. Just a nice moment that I wanted to share with y'all, and especially say to David: It was nice to hear your work on the airwaves! I guess you have to consider the demographics of who votes (who does vote, by the way?) I'm guessing a lot of young kids, and a few grandparents. There's a website devoted to voting in the worst, but I can't imagine they'd have that much of an impact. Considering how long Sanjaya stayed in, I'd say the 12-year-old-girl vote had a huge impact for a while. Melinda Doolittle is an amazing talent and I think that NOT winning AI is probably better for her than winning. That way, she won't be roped into doing things their way (although there is that tour they do with the top ten.) She got to perform in front of millions of people and get her face and voice out there and I doubt she'll be going away anytime soon. Okay. Sorry, Hell, about the spoilers. Lori ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2007 04:38:12 +0000 From: "Michael O'Malley" Subject: Njc American Idol : spoiler I cannot believe that Melinda got outvoted this week. This really shows us what the demographic of the voting audience is. Her consistent delivery of outstanding showstoppers made her the clear winner, imho. However, the reason she probably lost was that a) she's 29, b) she's a conservative Christian from Tulsa, and c) she admitted on national TV that her hero was her mother. The media claim that her lack of charisma and her status as professional back-up singer disqualify her from the prize. Please. Let's not mistake bubbly personality and attitude for charisma, nor should we pretend that the other remaining contestants are complete amateurs - this is not the case. Oh well, the tribe has spoken. Nonetheless, MD is one performer I would love to see someday in concert. And while we're on the subject of the dumbing down of pop culture in America, one thing that really irks me is when I hear these 20-something singers on tv shows who say things like - I'm going to sing New York New York by Frank Sinatra or Sunny Side of the Street by Ella Fitzgerald or whoever. It's like, the singer most associated with the song has suddenly become the composer of that song. I feel this does a grave disservice to the lyricists and composers who crafted these works.
