I have a blackberry, but it's a work one, so I'm not supposed to use it for personal things - at least, not when I'm out of town, as I discovered to my chagrin when I got back from Jonifest in France and was hit with a $300 bill for using the BB in France (I mistakenly thought that, because e-mails were being received, that maybe we had some kind of plan that would cover us away from home - which, in retrospect, makes very little sense, since I work for the Province of Ontario and it's highly unlikely I'd need to go to France for business and then, if I did, it would require the approval of more senior bureaucrats than you could shake a stick at). I'm amazed at how casually people use their cellphones. I don't even like using the regular telephone - I'd rather communicate in person or in writing, and somehow the phone feels very awkward to me. And I don't understand how people can afford them either, but I come from a background of people who'd hiss at you to get off the phone! - it's long-distance! so I get really cheap about some things. I've got a long-distance plan for the home phone, which I rarely use, so it's a bit of a waste of money. There are times when I want to phone up complete strangers in other towns just to get my money's worth - - but it's just too much of a hassle. I suppose I could call some other town and order a pizza or something. I can call anywhere in Canada and probably in the US too for x minutes for y dollars a month (I don't even remember). Maybe I should phone some of you just to show Bell that I'm not really a sucker after all. I find cellphones a bit too high-tech or something. I don't understand the concept of text messaging. WTF is that anyway? and the cellphones are so small I can't see anything on them. _________________________________________________________________ Like the way Microsoft Office Outlook works? You always have the option to NOT answer the phone or to turn it off. This is an option that I exercise frequently. I only answer my home phone if I know who's calling (and i want to speak to them - e.g., if my ex calls, i don't answer, but the kids are free to, if they want to; or if it's a friend that I know talks a lot and I'm not in the mood, then I don't answer.) I don't answer if it's an 800 number (because it's telemarketers), or if it says "unknown name" or "private number" (because that's often telemarketers as well and, if it's not, and it's important, the person is free to leave a message and I will call them back.) Given the percentage of time I DON'T answer compared to when I DO answer, I sometimes wonder whether having a phone is any use at all? I dumped my landline a while back and > haven't had to deal > with a telemarketer for years now - oh, sweet bliss. I've considered doing that - in some ways, each of us (the kids and I) having a cellphone makes more sense than having a shared landline that we often just let ring. However, there are a few things that you can't do with a cellphone. For example, in our building, if someone wants to come up, they call a code number that rings to our phone - this doesn't work with cellphones, but, if we're expecting someone, we could work around that. I think there might be a few other things that don't work with cell phones, but I guess I could deal with that from my desk phone at work - heh-heh. Don't you have something in the US where you can have your name taken off the telemarketers' list? They were supposed to introduce legislation to do that here, but it never came about (and that reminds me - I must bug my MP about it!) > And I don't take it with me everywhere I go - I > don't delude myself into > thinking that I'm that important. > I remind myself of that all the time, especially as relates to work, because I live in an environment of workaholics who seem to believe that everything they do is so important and so wonderful (my mind doesn't work that way). The point is, if one of us went away, the work would go on and no one would remember us after a short time. While I like the people I work with well enough, it's friends and family that count more to me. Yeah, it's great to have a cellphone sometimes - it came in mighty handy when Laura called a friend for directions when we discovered we had gone the wrong way heading back to the New York thruway on the way to jonifest. But I guess, if we didn't have that, we'd have had to stop and (gasp!) check a map or something! And the funeral of her mum, and one other family member, all in a 2 year period. There's a lot of introspection on this album. Both of my parents are on a slide so it's oddly comforting. The songwriting is all first-rate. Dear Joniamigos: In (a) case (of) you don't know, tomorrow is a big day for our Smurf (a.k.a. Robert "Bob" Murphy). Not only is it his burfday, but he is also having shoulder surgery. Let's all send up our prayers that his surgeon will have impossibly gentle hands as he fixes his rotator cuff. We love you, Smurfy, Oh yes we do, We don't love anyone, As much as you, When you're not with us, We're BLUE, Oh Smurfy, We love you. Pardon the sophomore jive; it's all I could come up with tonight. Joni does not sing too much about shoulders, except for "sun on my shoulders" and this: You looked so grand wearing wings Do you tape them to your shoulders just to sing Can you fly I heard you can! Can you fly Like an eagle doin' your hunting from the sky So, fly silly Smurfbird, and know that we will all be awaiting to hear that you are well on your 29th birthday.
