She doesn't like > cellphones. She's out of > touch with the breakdown of this century. > She's not the only one. I don't own a cellphone. I have a blackberry, but it's a work one, so I'm not supposed to use it for personal things - at least, not when I'm out of town, as I discovered to my chagrin when I got back from Jonifest in France and was hit with a $300 bill for using the BB in France (I mistakenly thought that, because e-mails were being received, that maybe we had some kind of plan that would cover us away from home - which, in retrospect, makes very little sense, since I work for the Province of Ontario and it's highly unlikely I'd need to go to France for business and then, if I did, it would require the approval of more senior bureaucrats than you could shake a stick at). I'm amazed at how casually people use their cellphones. I don't even like using the regular telephone - I'd rather communicate in person or in writing, and somehow the phone feels very awkward to me. And I don't understand how people can afford them either, but I come from a background of people who'd hiss at you to get off the phone! - it's long-distance! so I get really cheap about some things. I've got a long-distance plan for the home phone, which I rarely use, so it's a bit of a waste of money. There are times when I want to phone up complete strangers in other towns just to get my money's worth - - but it's just too much of a hassle. I suppose I could call some other town and order a pizza or something. I can call anywhere in Canada and probably in the US too for x minutes for y dollars a month (I don't even remember). Maybe I should phone some of you just to show Bell that I'm not really a sucker after all. I find cellphones a bit too high-tech or something. I don't understand the concept of text messaging. WTF is that anyway? and the cellphones are so small I can't see anything on them. One thing they did give me recently at work is a bluetooth ear-thingy to use with my blackberry and I do sort of like that, because then I don't need to press the BB up against my ear and then my hands are free and I can write stuff down if I have to much more easily. It's kind of ironic, because most of the phone calls I do use it for are ones to and from home - the kids calling to ask me where the hell I am; me calling them to find out if we need milk and so on, the kind of stupid, boring conversations that I hate hearing other people talking about as they're out grocery-shopping. However, it comes in useful when you need a seat on the bus and you want people to get away from you because they think you're crazy because you're talking to yourself. My only phone is a cellphone and I prefer it to a landline. Especially, during the school year when I'm never home, I can make whatever calls I need to where ever I am. And just because you have a cell phone doesn't mean people can reach you. If I don't want to answer I don't..especially, if I have it on silent, I don't even notice it ring.
