I like Bjork and Tori. Bjork wins that celebrity death match for me anyday. For me Joni, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Nina Simone, and Bjork are those that rise to the top in music. I've been developing a thing for Igor Stravinsky too but i don't think it's the same thing:-) I like Scarlet's Walk a lot, great moments include amber waves, a sorta fairytale, wednesdaym, taxi ride, mrs jesus, and gold dust. but the Beekeeper, oh cheeses, give me back my twenty euro it sucks hairy apples. I finally got to see Tori on tour when beekeeper was released and i have to say that i would be reluctant to pay to see her again. the evening was bland, dull, and really rather tiring. The highlight of the show was when sang two covers that had been suggested by fans on her website - Feeling Groovy (Simong & Garfunkel) and a U2 song (i think it was new year's day). This strikes me as a very sad thing - an artist known for her songwriting and emotional performances impressing most when singing someone elses song. Unlike Bob, however, i love Boys for Pele and From the Choirgirl Hotel as well as LIttle Earthquakes and Under the Pink (both of which are essential). Bjork. I love most of her albums. I would recommend Debut to anyone. It is still one of my most played albums all these years later. Big Time Sensuality, Anchor Song, Violently Happy - come on, amazing stuff. Post is wonderful. Isobel idoes it for me every time, her voice is amazing and the tune is haunting (Even in those versions where it is almost hidden behind the beats). The album Homogenic is wonderful (and for me this is where i start thinking, mmm, some of this reminds me of the Jungle Line) but i might not recommend that as a first listen except that the a-bloody-stounding All is Full Of Love is in there somewhere. Vespertine would be a good first Bjork album, but Medulla and Selma Songs, you might want to leave them for a while (but definitely great albums - might be kind of like ercommening DJRD to someone as a first Joni album when they are familiar with Blue and Hits) I know many people don't like the idea of greatest hits albums but i don't hold any such standard. If you want a nice range of songs from Bjork take home a copy of greatest hits. This is probably a good time to pick up Bjork's new album, Volta, which was released last week. The reviews vary considerably but overall seem to tend towards this being worth the price. Bjork is headlining a festival that i have a ticket for a the end of the summer and i cannot wait. Very exciting. The Catalan press went overboard on Rickie Lee Jones yesterday (she plays here next week I think) in a big splash which included RLJ's opinions of all her albums one by one. The Joni Tribute Album was also reviewed (3 out of 4 stars) same as Bjork's 'Volta' and Patti's 'Twelve'. Sally Shapiro got 4 stars, anyone ever heard of her? The big feature of the magazine I read was Rickie and the cover was the ulgiest photo I've ever seen of her. She looked dreadful. As usual, full of references to Tom Waits (is there anyone out there who doesn't know this already, and if so, why is it important now?). But I digress, as I do. Garret went on, as he does... ;-) >>Bjork. I love most of her albums. I would recommend Debut to anyone. It is still one of my most played albums all these years later. The sticker on the cover says 'debut + play dead' as if it were a different version of something earlier. Anyway, it has 12 tracks and I guess it's the original track line-up. I already had Vespertine and Selma Songs so I am, not for the first time in my life, strolling backwards to Bjorkdom. FYI, the last paragraph of the review says 'Anything by Bjork is a fantastic challenge to the conventions of musical language, but although in Volta she has journeyed further than ever, she has returned more lost than usual'. >>Bjork is headlining a festival that i have a ticket for a the end of the summer and i cannot wait. Very exciting.<< Enjoy it, and thanks for chipping in. mike in bcn, rueing that Muller and I didn't get a chance to kick Garret and Stryngs arses (again) in the song game at fest 2007. Maybe in 2008? Hi Bruce, well I am not sure about Hejira, I got Clouds and LOTC and they had a sticker on them which said digitally enhanced or remastered or something similar... That's your HDCD isn't? Sorry I don't really understand all these terms! I am listening to the Plastic Ono Band! I need to listen some more but it definitely impresses me more than the Imagine album. I have to say that I am a bit sceptical about the whole peace movement with him and Yoko, and it does seem that the last years of his live he was psychologically not very well, so when he sings about them wanting to save the whole world it makes me uneasy. But I like his singing and the simplicity of the sound; and Working Class Hero is I think brilliant song-writing. I hear some of of him in some of the Brit-pop singers as well. The times were changing rapidly in those days too weren't they? I mean think of the early Beatles and then what happened later on, there is such a difference. As if Joni was extraordinary when it comes to changes in style.... The movie sort of more or less is informed in a general way by the career of Carole King. I believe that Man from Mars accompanies scenes from the early 70's -- King's Tapestry period. I daresay we're all on the same magic bus most of the time, even if there is no driver on the top. ; ) It's always best to write your review immediately after the show while it's all still fresh in your heart and mind and running all through your circuits like a heartbeat (or the "strike while the iron is hot" Neil Young philosphy) and you captured the evening beautifully. And yeah, nice T-shirt! And Woodstock? Right on! Stardust, golden. When I saw CSN in August 2005 they opened with this one (after I had shared, pre-show, with everyone in the seats around me that if they mentioned Joni I would go nuts, so lots of people pointed at me and smiled and said: "Who wrote that?") and when I saw CSN&Y in August 2006, they closed with it. (Old friends, like bookends....Joni's presence....love it!) The CSN&Y show last August was THEE best concert of my life, (impossibly gentle) hands down! (Of course, that does not include the six times I saw Joni.) And I can go there over and over and over again, my friends, because our dear Ashara sent me the entire concert on CD last fall. Thank you again, Ashara! I never got to share that experience (re-living that concert on CD where I swear I can hear my own hoots and WOOO HOOOOs!) with you all because it would just take me too long....maybe someday...it is just too intense for words....some semblance of the garden. Now some news about Stephen's friends: 1. David Crosby must have recovered from his pneumonia, which forced the cancellation of the C & N tour this fall (which Monica and I both had tickets for, in separate states) because he is playing with Jackson Browne on June 2 in Santa Monica, California (Oh, but California.....). Details are at jacksonbrowne.com. Kate Bennett, surely you will be there, non? And you know.... 2. Crosby and Nash have another fall tour planned. I see they are going to be in Cleveland, Monica -- is that near you? And Westbury NY, where you were last night, Kenny. The closest venue for me is Worcester MA on October 24th. Do any of you sweet birds north of the CT state borderline (or some mark of inbetween) want to go? I'm not sure what Neil is up to. Nothing popped up in my inchoate (Hi, RF!) glance at his website, but I sure love the video docs about the creation of Living With War. This email came through weird, with squares in place of apostrophes and maybe other things, so it was hard to read. But I will say that while I am not a lyricist, I am a poet, and would never want to be held personally accountable for things I've written in poems. Some of it is autobiographical, some of it's historical (ways I once felt, things I once went through), and much of it is some combination of the two above and _completely imagined_ circumstances. I have no idea of JM's writing process, but I do know that most of my poet friends tend to start a poem with an image and while much or some of a poem may be personal, very seldom is all of it. Also I remember a well-known critic in a review of my first book criticising the book because the speaker was too 'passive' too and prototypically female in some poems. Sometimes writers reflect reality--their personal reality or the reality they perceive around them. Finally I think that complicated people tend to get in complicated relationships. A lot of art gets made out of obsession and grief and difficult relationships. Just last week I got a lit mag in the mail with a review of my most recent book. The review was very positive about the book as a book, but had a completely different take than I did as the writer (or than Publishers Weekly did for that matter). - --AJ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 May 2007 17:44:16 -0500 From: "AJ" Subject: Re: Re: NJC Nick Drake and Way to Blue - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joseph Palis" >I agree. > Everytime I play Nick Drake's "Way to Blue" in the station, I think of > Victor. > > Joseph > np: Chuck Mangione - The Hill Where The Lord Hides OMG I listened to that Mangione album with Feels So Good on it obsessively for about a year in the late 1970s. To me it's not as confessional as it is universal. I mean, haven't you ever ended a relationship where you had to suppress parts of yourself either because the other person asked you too or because you couldn't feel like you could truly relax and be yourself around them? Matter of fact, I would submit that there is a degree of that in EVERY relationship. This is Joni's way of saying that now that the relationship has ended, she is able to be what she wants without having to suppress anything. I didn't understand much of Hejira when I first heard it, but I sure knew exactly what she was saying here. No cringes from me. Even Costello's voice with its sometimes wide vibrato, really sang the songs convincingly. I love "I Still Have That Other Girl" and "What's Her Name Today" plus that lovely lovely "This House is Empty Now". I love all the versions done by other artists of "This House is Empty Now" from Siobhan Pettit to Anne Sofie von Otter and you know there might be more. I can't say I love "Lost Horizon" but who can resist the cast? Plus the book it was based from was written by one of my earliest favorite novelists -- James Hilton. AJ, heard of Anais Mitchell yet? I could listen to "My Thief" from that record for a week > straight. I think I have, actually. I, too, have listened to this record for days on end. It has such strong associations for me now I have to be careful when I listen to it. I now need to get the new Bachrach album suggested in a previous post! Listen, I'm so pathetic I bought a CD called The Reel Burt Bachrach just so I could have a song called Long Ago, Tomorrow (love them from a bad 1970s movie) and the title song to Lost Horizon. If they can tap into its fierce winds, the world's entire electrical needs could be met, they say. The trick is figuring out how to harness the energy and get it down to the ground cost-effectively and safely. Dozens of researchers in California and around the world believe huge kite-like wind-power generators could be the solution. As bizarre as that might seem, respected experts say the idea is sound enough to justify further investigation. The jet stream typically blows from west to east 6 to 9 miles over the northern hemisphere at speeds up to 310 mph. By lofting generators into the upper atmosphere, scientists theorize they could capture the power of the jet stream and transmit the electricity along cables back to Earth. A wind machine, floated into such a monstrous force, would transmit electricity on aluminum or copper cables -- or through invisible microwave beams -- down to power grids, where it would be distributed to homes and businesses. Unlike ground-based wind generators, the high-altitude devices would be too high to be heard and barely visible against the blue sky."
