Other signs of aging, here in Dayton are * At 43-45 or so, the need for bifocals kicks in, if you live this long. My eye doctor said it happens to everyone. * At 45, I couldn't tolerate Diet Coke anymore. Asparatame can cause strange problems. For me, it was like a runny nose, except it was in the sinuses. Also, 15 minutes after I drank one, I felt nauseated. I thought it was stress at work because I was always back at my desk when it kicked in. Fun stuff. * At 48, when on the phone, my ability to tune out a conversation in the same room was shot. Back in the 1980's, I worked in an open room full of people troubleshooting problems. Sometimes, I was able to overhear information while on the phone with my own customer. Those days are gone forever. I should just let 'em go but... * At 49, I had worked for the same company for four years. On a Monday, they hired a new guy. On the same Friday, they let me go saying there was "a down-turn in the business cycle". They said this with "straight faces". It might have been tough to take except they kept someone who tries to quit every six months. Living well is my best revenge anyway. * At 51, I couldn't tolerate more than 1/3 cup of coffee anymore. In a word, the problem was intestinal. It's special fun to figure out what's wrong when your co-workers are aware of the problem. * At 51, without changing my diet, I began gaining weight. I read the American Heart Association's book "No-Fad Diet". (ISBN 1-4000-5159-2) They say, beginning at 50, you need 10% fewer calories because your metabolism slows. Don't wait for age 65 to start ordering from the "senior" menu. The strange thing is that noone warned me about these upcoming changes. My doctor didn't say, "Welcome to your 40's. In 2 - 5 years, you'll need bifocals. Welcome to your 50's. You may no longer tolerate foods that you now take for granted and your attention span will evaporate." Anyway, I'm thinking about what work I'll do when I can not solve problems anymore. Luckily, that's seems to be waning slowly. Jim In a post about Beyonce, Catherine said in part, >And most of the lyrics don't say anything interesting. I think a lot of it has to do with aging. I find it difficult to differentiate when there are a lot of sounds or conversations going on around me, so I end up tuning everything out. I don't know if I'm losing my hearing or if having difficulty differentiating between too many stimuli is part of growing old. A similar thing is happening with my vision, which has never been very good (I've worn glasses since I was 7 years old and have never yet met anyone with a prescription as bad or as weird as mine). I often walk along the street not noticing the people around me and I'm sure I pass people by that I know and they probably think I'm snubbing them, but I just don't see them.> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 May 2007 10:31:34 -0500 From: "mia _" Subject: re: NJC state of music business <> I have to laugh, Catherine, 'cause I have the same difficulty - but not due to age. I've been like this my whole life. I do have a bit of hearing loss, but I don't think that's my problem. The more people in a room talking, the more I tune out. Sometimes I don't know if people are talking to me unless they say my name (gosh, I sound like a dog or something). I've even been questioned as to why I've been ignoring others. It's a bit embarrassing. I often wonder if Joni has the same difficulty, as she wrote in People's Parties: I feel like I'm sleeping Can you wake me You seem to have a broader sensibility I'm just living on nerves and feelings With a weak and a lazy mind And coming to peoples parties Fumbling deaf dumb and blind Mia _________________________________________________________________ Watch free concerts with Pink, Rod Stewart, Oasis and more. There was a scene where the divorced couple dances to Joni's Both sides now (new version), and if you haven't seen it I can highly recommend it. Another thing altogether: I wonder if anybody on this list remembers a novel by James A Mitchener (from the 70's) that had a Joni-mention. I don't remember the novel at all but I do remember this one paragraph where the main character is driving along some beach and runs into a group of young people in a Volkswagen (a bug, what else:_) and he is captured by the beautiful voice singing on their radio and later learns her name: Joni Mitchell. I cannot for the life of me remember the title of that novel, so if anybody does, I'd be thrilled. I know there is information on Joni in films and books on jonimitchell.com but I haven't found any on Life as a house or the Mitchener novel.
