My kids both have I-pods (Mum can't afford one!) and I don't get it either. I think that I-tunes will automatically convert mp3s to its own format (whatever the hell it's called). I think the bottom line is that your mp3s will work, but also hope that someone that gets this stuff will confirm. What I've found is that if I go to listen to a piece of music on the computer (e.g. Muller's covers that I may just have downloaded), then I-tunes will open and sometimes it will start putting the stuff into one of the kids' I-pod lists without my telling it to, and then they'll wonder why they've got some song on their I-Pod that they didn't ask for. I know that these programs (windows media, I-tunes, Winamp and/or whatever-the-hell-other media programas you may have on your computer) like to compete with one another and sometimes they'll ask you if you want them to be the default, but other times will just take over without your having asked their opinion, but it's kind of irritating just the same. There's just way the hell more technology out there that makes less and less sense to me and I'm beyond the point where I even want to understand it, because it's just too much work to read the manuals (assuming that one's eyesight is even good enought to read the tiny print.) An Israeli lecturer who died in the massacre at a U.S. university saved the lives of several students by blocking the doorway of his classroom from the approaching gunman before he was fatally shot, his son said Tuesday. Students of Liviu Librescu, 76, a holocaust survivor who was an engineering science and mathematics lecturer at Virginia Tech for 20 years, sent e-mails to his wife, Marlena, telling of how he blocked the gunman's way and saved their lives, said the son, Joe. "My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," Joe Librescu said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out." Liviu Librescu, was respected in his field, his son said. "His work was his life in a sense," Joe Librescu said. "That was a good place for him to practice his research." The couple immigrated to Israel from Romania in 1978 and then moved to Virginia in 1985 for his sabbatical, but had stayed since then, said Joe Librescu, who himself studied at the school from 1989 to 1994. In Romania, the academic community also was mourning Librescu's death. "It is a great loss," said Ecaterina Andronescu, rector of the Polytechnic University in Bucharest, where Librescu graduated in mechanics and aviation construction in 1953. "We have immense consideration for the way he reacted and defended his students with his life." He also received a Ph.D from the Bucharest-based Academy of Sciences in 1969, and received an honorary degree with the Polytechnic University in 2000. At the Polytechnic University, his picture was put on a table and a candle was lit, and people lay flowers. "We remember him as a great specialist in aeronautics. He left behind hundreds of prestigious papers," said one of the professors, Nicolae Serban Tomescu. Librescu, who specialized in composite structures and aeroelasticity, published extensively and received numerous awards for his work. He also received several NASA grants and also taught courses at the University "La Sapienza" of Rome, Italy, and at the Tel Aviv University in Israel. In Monday's massacre, a gunman killed 32 people at the Virginia university before committing suicide. It was the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2007 12:59:05 EDT From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: NJC Shootings What are your thoughts on the Virginia Tech shootings? But I was horrified to notice, last evening, while looking at my "purchased music" playlist, that I have over 500 iTunes store songs. yow! how'd that happen. Very scary..I didn't even notice. They just make it sooooo easy to buy on a whim. And its kind of a rush. For instance, when that Neil Young "Live at Massey Hall" release came out a few weeks ago, I had to have it RIGHT then. And iTunes had it! I'm online=I buy music. Wish there were more options like eMusic.com. Would be cool if Rhino Records, for instance, started selling all the cuts they've released over the years, as good .mp3's for .99. I'd be all over that. Why? 1. Proprietary format is a hassle, you have to convert MP3s through itunes. 2. ipods have internal batteries that need to be recharged, and eventually replaced by the factory. 3. itunes uses DRM (digital rights management) for the songs, meaning your use of them is limited. Soon they will be going to a two tiered pricing system; they will offer DRM-free tracks for $1.29. 4. Everything about Apple is designed to lock you into their format, so screw that. On the other hand, if you want the sexiest LOOKING player, get an ipod. I paid $65 for my little Zen, it's cool enough looking for me. It's about the size of a disposable lighter, has an FM radio, plays on one AAA battery (use a rechargable if you want), and when hooked up to the computer via USB cable, the computer "sees" it as an extra 1 GB drive. You can simply drag your MP3s into it, and you can also use it as a portable HD to store pictures, or any other kind of files. itunes is not the only game in town-emusic is nearly as big, and Amazon will be getting into the game in the next few weeks. Further, I would stick with an inexpensive model (assuming you don't need to play videos) because technology is constantly improving, especially flash memory. (Flash memory= no moving parts=good). Today's miracle gadget will be outdated in a couple of years, or at least alot cheaper. Presumably with good mics and Rockbox firmware I could become one of those stealth tapers, but I'm both chicken and lazy. - -----Original Message----- From: Catherine McKay [mailto:anima_rising@yahoo.ca] Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2007 3:02 PM To: Richard Flynn; 'Em'; Bob.Muller@Fluor.com; pleader@nyc.rr.com Cc: 'Deb Messling'; joni@smoe.org Subject: RE: stupid question re iPod NJC - --- Richard Flynn wrote: > While I do compress CDs to .mp3 (usually at 256kbps) > for my teenage > listening device, Teenage listening device. I appreciate the people who do it, of course, while understanding that they're all nuts anyway. I think someone, someone not so lazy as I, could make a very interesting film or book about the world of stealth taping. How ironic is it (maybe it isn't) that good headphones often cost more than the listening device. Now it's more often likely that the reverse is true. Yebbut we don't want to listen to AM or 8 tracks now. The evolution of sound systems was always towards improvement in quality until digital compression came around. CD's were better than LP's, which were better than 78's....now we are going backwards...hopefully it is temporary. The next generation's legacy will not be tin ears, it will be hearing loss. Loud headphones, rock concerts, and deafening car systems will usher in a generation with damaged hearing. This issue is not emphasized enough to young people, and is preventable-tell your kids and grandkids that if their ears are ringing, they are permanantly damaging their hearing. Immediately following it was a promo for "24" with Keiffer Sutherland (good guy) and some bad guy working out their problems with handguns. Same tense music, slick graphics, etc. Apparently no one at the network gets the connection. You make these shows about sick fucks with guns (and doesn't everyone see themselves as the good guy, or at least the oppressed underdog?), because America loves it's guns, and, gee, some kid imitates what he sees how many times a day. I think there may be other issues. I have read some stuff that says he may have been on antidepressant drugs (like the Columbine shooters) which are known to have side effects of violent behavior. We'll see. Obviously he was sexually conflicted-his language reflects a "sex is bad" mentality (religious background), yet he stalked girls and took pictures of them under their desks with his cell phone-obviously they found him creepy. A hooker might have been able to solve the problem. This is freaky-I googled "ipod sucks" for my former post, and found this video this kid made in his dorm room where he goes on a tear about ipods and Apples, in the same kind of whiny, big baby voice as Cho, and he looks like Cho, and he talks about wanting to shoot himself or just shoot something-maybe the next headline. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3450073443917612084 RR ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2007 22:01:25 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: RE: stupid question re iPod NJC As a non-audiophile, I really relate to what you're saying, Bob. CDs were/are handier than LPs, CDs reduced the chances for pops and hisses and skips, but CDs also reduced the depth and warmth of the music - -- you can hear this even on an average stereo system. Go ahead, spin some vinyl tonight and listen to the difference. Sometimes I really miss LPs. (And let's not even get into the cover art differences ...) As for mp3 players, before iPods became so wildly popular, my partner bought me a Rio Sport as a gift (at my request; I wanted it to use while running). I think it cost $169 or so in 2003. Here's my Rio on eBay, starting at $6.99. (Sheesh!) http://cgi.ebay.com/Rio-Sport-S30s-64-MB-MP3-Player_W0QQitemZ230117946900QQihZ013QQcategoryZ75452QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem My Rio is very light, fits in the palm of my hand but also has a belt clip, and an FM tuner, a clock, and a stopwatch. It plays standard mp3 files. The hard wired storage doesn't hold much, but there's a card slot. Theoretically, I could store a bunch of tunes on different cards and swap them out. I've never bothered, as I'm happy with the selection of 50 tunes I stored in the thing a few years ago. (Okay, truth be told, I listen to my Rio when I run across it. Things in my house tend to move around and I don't always know where a given thing is, other than car keys, cell phone, laptop, and wallet.) The only complaint I have about my Rio is the ear buds. They're not comfortable. I switched them out with a pair of folding headphones by Koss. I'm not an audiophile, and the set up sounds good to me. The outspoken lefty will perform a televised concert April 27 for about 300 patients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The hospital in Washington, D.C., which has been under fire in recent months amid reports of inadequate care, opened its doors to Mellencamp despite the Indiana rock star's vocal stance against the Iraq war and the Bush administration. "I don't pretend to understand decisions the government makes," he says. "I'm sure in light of the circumstances, their first inclination would have been to say no. But they want to give their patients something special." The catalyst for Mellencamp's appearance was his brief acoustic set at the opening in January of the Center for the Intrepid, a physical rehab facility in San Antonio for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Disturbed by the Walter Reed scandal, Mellencamp initially considered staging a large benefit show and funneling proceeds to the hospital. "Then it dawned on me what I really wanted to do is lighten the load of the soldiers and workers in the hospital, so why not just play for them?" he says. "The amount we'd raise in an arena concert is peanuts next to what the government throws around." In a statement to USA TODAY, Walter Reed spokesman Steve Sanderson said "warriors in transition" are eagerly awaiting the show. "Unique events like this provide a great forum for these soldiers to relax and enjoy themselves." For the past two weeks, Mellencamp has been rehearsing hits as well as songs from his current Freedom's Road album. He says he'll avoid such hot potatoes as 2003's vitriolic anti-war tune, To Washington. Nor will he orate between tunes, he says. "I'm not entering any political realm. That's not what this is about." The performance will air at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT on HDNet in the channel's first broadcast of a live concert. HDNet chairman Mark Cuban, founder of the Fallen Patriot Fund to aid families of soldiers killed or injured in Iraq, was eager to televise the event. "Sometimes we forget about the people who put their lives and health on the line to protect our country," Cuban says. "This was a chance to bring much-needed attention." The rocker is an ideal messenger, Cuban says. "John's music reflects the American spirit." The hour-long set, in a small assembly hall where Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante and Martha Raye performed in the '40s, will be raw, energetic and "with just enough light to see the band," Mellencamp says. "It won't be glitzy." The event proves "you can support the troops and not support the war," he says. "If I can entertain these kids and get the people watching to think about who's making sacrifices for their country, well, mission accomplished." ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #160 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
