I went ahead and picked up a cashier's check for $100 and gave it to Mihaela. She was a little surprised but very happy and said that it made her day. It feels good to know that some actions that are wrong can be corrected and set right. I think a few good vibes can go a long way. She was especially blown away that people who she doesn't even know were willing to step in and make a difference. I told her a little bit about the jmdl and I think she is going to write something that I will forward to the list. thanks again, Victor ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 22:46:26 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Covers Hi gang. Please excuse the long post. I don't often write lengthy posts but, I am in musical heaven. I know I'm on the tail end of this thread but, I had to give it some thought because I am a big fan of covers. Probably not as much as Bob Muller but, I see covers as a huge compliment to an artist and can bring a whole new audience to a song. I have become a fan of so many artists through them that I would never have even heard otherwise. It was probably a cover of Joni that I would have heard that got me into her music in the first place. My sister performed Big Yellow Taxi back in the early '70s as part of her repertoire. She never really thought much beyond its quirkiness or investigated Joni's music further. It was that memory when I then heard Joni's original and sparked my interest in what else this woman has written. That and Judy Collins' cover of Both Sides, Now. I have an enormously wide range in my music taste and will not say any genre that I'm not into. I used to say things like, "I'm not really into Grungel" for example and then I heard Tori Amos' cover of Nirvana's, Smells Like Teen Spirit. To hear that song as a deeply felt ballad woke me up. Sometimes it's just the age bracket that you're in that causes some artists to just pass you by. Too young or too old. I guess my musical appreciation period is mid '70s to mid '80s. Not that I won't listen to music outside of that period, it's just that I was just effortlessly soaking up the music from that period. Now I have to go seeking. Some artists who make their way by covering other artists are often belittled for having no creative talent of their own but that's only because there are too few who put their own creative spin on these songs that they hold up so high. I know that Bob is turned on by people who are totally creative in their approach to covering a song. I can appreciate those who set about trying to reinvent the song but there is a fine line between giving a song a whole new life and revealing its flaws so badly that you begin so dislike the original because of it. There is one band who turned the idea of a cover version into an entirely new artform in itself and in turn reinvented every song they covered and gave it a new respect and turned a whole new generation and culture onto some otherwise, obscure artist or one they never have listened to otherwise. That band was This Mortal Coil. They were created as a sort of super group of disparate artists from varied backgrounds and talents. These people were gathered together by Ivo Watts, creator of the 4AD label in the UK in the 1980s. 4AD was more than a record label. It was a vision for creativity. It nurtured some of the most creative people in Britain and beyond. Not only musical artists but graphic designers too with it's 23 Envelope graphic design arm. This Mortal Coil recorded three albums between 1983 and 1991, each album with a different line up of people. They came mostly from 4AD's signed bands but also from other sources too. They were all beautiful soundscapes, flowing between styles, effortlessly. Each one a journey from soaring violins and cellos into dark and angry rhythms, piano solos, danceable beats and eerie vocal techniques. They came from disparate sources such as Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Coloubox, Clan of Xymox and solo artists. The majority of their songs were covers. Sometimes of very obscure songs, from rock to country and folk, metal and pop. All reconstructed to flow with emotion. It was through This Mortal Coil that I learned of artists such as Tim Buckley, Roy Harper, Emmylou Harris and Mary Margaret O'Hara. Elizabeth Frazer's vocals on the Tim Buckley song, Song To The Siren is now legendary. I was so taken away with the accompanying video as a 19 year old that I went out and got my nose pierced. I wanted a tiny stud just like her because, like the song, it was subtle and beautiful in a very gentle way. From Emmylou Harris' song, 'til I Gain Control Again to Pearls Before Swine's, The Jeweller (reportedly based on Pope John Paul's novel) to Gene Clark's, The Strength of Strings, This Mortal Coil knew how to weave these songs together into a single musical journey that can be totally unexpected with innovative synthesiser techniques and vocal styles. It's unfortunate that they never covered a Joni song because I would have loved to hear what amazing things they could have done with her powerful lyrics. I urge people to get lost in this. The three albums were, It'll End In Tears (1983), Filigree & Shadow (1986) and Blood (1991). My favourite is Filigree & Shadow with the inclusion of African/American dance diva, Alison Limmerick thrown into the mix. Her vocals on the Talking Heads song, Drugs will blow you away. So, I will try to come up with my top 20 covers. 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Tori Amos (Nirvana) 2. Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil (Tim Buckley) 3. Another Day - This Mortal Coil (Roy Harper) 4. My Father - This Mortal Coil (Judy Collins) 5. A Case of You - Brian Kennedy (Joni Mitchell) 6. Landslide - Dixie Chicks (Fleetwood Mac) 7. Blue - Sarah McLachlan (Joni Mitchell) 8. Mad World - Gary Jules (Tears For Fears) 9. Tracks of My Tears - Go West (Smokey Robinson) 10. Stairway To Heaven - Far Corporation (Led Zeppelin) 11. Black Betty - Spiderbait (Ram Jam) 12. Wish You Were Here - Wyclef (Pink Floyd) 13. Heroes - Icehouse (David Bowie) 14. Alfie - Everything But The Girl (Dionne Warwick) 15. Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Judy Garland/Louis Armstrong) 16. Same Situation - Christine Collister (Joni Mitchell) 17. Bizarre Love Triangle - Frente (New Order) 18. Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash (Depeche Mode) 19. Jesse - Joan Baez (Janis Ian) Mark in Sydney NP I Must Have Been Blind - This Mortal Coil featuring Richenel (Tim Buckley) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 09:09:05 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Joni + Neil Young on Helpless There are a couple of different LW soundtracks out there. Originally it was issued as an edited version of the full concert, with the only song from Joni's set being "Coyote" and "Helpless" is on it as well. It's basically what you hear in the film - hence referred to as the soundtrack - - duh! Probably due to the fact that the entire show was making the rounds on the bootleg circuit, it was re-released a couple years ago with the ENTIRE concert, including Joni's full set: Coyote, Shadows & Light (a nice reinvention of that one), & Furry Sings The Blues. She also provides backup vocals on their performance of my favorite Band tune, "Acadian Driftwood". And she contributes to the finale "I Shall Be Released" too. When I saw Joni live in Boston on 7/20/83, she left the stage in the middle of Song for Sharon and took a break so that "everyone can find their seats and we can do this thing". When she finally came back 20 minutes later, she and the band ripped through what I have always come to call "the rock and roll joni" part of the show, and that was WTRF. I mean, Michael Landau was just shredding away during his solo and the band was just pumped to be letting loose like that. I know that the studio version isn't anywhere near that ferocity, but that live version definitely earns the 'rockiest' title for me. Back to lurkdom.... Seven year old Shane Bernier is a cancer patient at the hildren's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and he is asking people to send him a card for his birthday on May 30th. Shane wants to set a world record for the most number of cards received! I just saw him on the news, and the newspeople were talking to his mother, who says he now has over 300,000, but I think he's trying to get at least ten times that many - I believe he needs to have 350,000,000. And he's trying to get them by May 30, his 8th birthday. You don't have to wait for his birthday to send your card. Start sending them today to: Shane Bernier Box 484 Lancaster Ontario CANADA K0C 1N0 It doesn't count if a bunch of people sign one card - it has to be individual cards. There's info here and, if you don't want to buy a card, or don't have time, you can print one from the website, but they do want to receive them by mail. I think it would be great if everyone on the jmdl and the NortheastJonifest group were to send him a card. http://shanebernier.ca/ thanks, everyone, for listening.
