If you are in possession of a Joni original (or lithograph) and are willing to lend it for this event, please contact me. You will be given credit (on loan from Fabulous Joni Fan) and I promise I will be VERY careful with your treasure. We will pay for postage. http://www.jonimitchell.com/news/index.cfm If you don't know about the event I'm talking about there is a new news item at the main site where you can check it out. I'm very excited about the fact that Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers will be there (editor of Acoustic Magazine). Jeffrey wrote an in depth cover article about Joni's masterful acoustic style including a long interview with Joni. This article is at the website at this link: http://jmdl.com/library/view.cfm?id=38 I consider this article a primer on Joni's guitar style and I treasure my copy (the photos from this article are great, too). I asked him about setting up a site for himself on My Space Music and he replied that he thought it would be a good idea. I was so blown away by his playing on "Hotel Room" and he reminded me so much of the talent of Jaco Pastorius, I just felt strongly in my heart that the U.S. should know more about him. My Space Music is becoming a place where artists are getting much needed recognition and a golden opportunity to promote one's self. I am so excited that he is going to put a site up there and I wanted to tell you about it! Now my prayer is that Joni will play with him at some point and time! Waaah! That would be too much!!!! The words "folk" and "jazz" seem to circulate alot around Joni. But she's got some rock in her too. She's just something above labels. I think that would be more accurate than saying she's this or that or a little this and a little that. Although it's funny because I just had a friend message me on MySpace saying he's been wanting to listen to country. This was the friend who I had posted about a while back after I went to his house to watch some YouTube. We watched "Both Sides Now" and from the beginning guitar strum, he said, "I didn't know you listened to country. Cool (something along those lines)." So I guess he thinks I listen to country..... Anyway, now to the point. What do you think is Joni's rockiest song? And in rockiest, I mean heaviest...good ol' rock-n-roll. Raised On Robbery maybe? I've always thought (since I first heard it) Night In The City is very rock oriented despite its bare to the bones instrumentation--guitar, some keys, and bass. But the rhythm of that song has a rock feel. And of course Stephen Stills' bass playing adds another melodic rock component to it. But I wouldn't call this the "rockiest" song. Just saying. - -Monika ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 21:46:52 +0100 From: Chris Marshall Subject: Re: Message from Pedro Aznar (njc) On 17 Apr 2007, at 17:43, Sherelle Smith wrote: > I apologize for being way behind on digests so I don't know what is > going on in Joni-land but I wanted to jump in tell you of an email > reply I received from bassist Pedro Aznar. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Well, you have to qualify if you're limiting yourself to Joni's versions or expanding the discussion to Joni's songs. If the former, than you still have to qualify whether or not you're going to limit yourself to the studio versions or whether you're going to include Joni's live versions. She rocked up a number of her songs on her '83 tour (with mixed results imo), songs you wouldn't necessarily think of as "rock" songs, like "Banquet" and "Song For Sharon". If you're talking about any interpretations of her songs, it's hard to debate against "This Flight Tonight". Nazareth plugged into it and made it a standard in their repertoire (there's even a cover of it on a Nazareth Tribute CD) and it's since been similarly metallisized by a variety of groups. Likewise, Roine Stolt found the rock groove in "Sex Kills" and turned in a tremendous cover of that song, giving it the edge that it needs. And there are several rockin' takes on BSN too, one of which is coming up on Volume 88 in a couple of weeks. If, however, you limit yourself to the official Joni albums, then "Raised on Robbery" is probably THE likely suspect for Joni's dalliance with what most folks would call 'rock', with perhaps "Lead Balloon" right behind (plagued by production, which unfortunately sanitized the rock out of it). Of course, as we all know, trying to label Joni's music and fit it into neat little compartments is an exercise in futility. RoR could have been recorded as a slow jazz ballad, and any of her songs could be rocked up as far as that goes. I hope things are ok. Keep us posted. GARRET We're ok. We decided to stay and as it turned out the Raritan River did not rise much more when it crested at 38 ft about 2PM. This is about 10 ft above flood stage. During HurricaneFloyd in 1999, the river crested at 42 ft. Our unit was spared again, as we are on a second floor, however others were not so lucky. I feel bad for people who were flooded during Floyd and are now going through this again. The scene is all too familiar. Neighboring towns such as Bound Brook, Milltown and Manville were hit hard again. Main Street in Bound Brook was flooded with about 10 feet or water. Residents had to be brought to dry land by rescue teams. Lots of photos here. The good news is, no reported deaths as of yet. _http://www.c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/tngallery?Avis=B1&Dato=20070417&Kategori=PIX 02&Lopenr=704170801&Ref=PH_ (http://www.c-n.com/apps/pbcs.dll/tngallery?Avis=B1&Dato=20070417&Kategori=PIX02&Lopenr=704170801&Ref=PH) Thanks for your concern Garrett. Is there a cd, a soundtrack made from this concert or a live album or whatever, where I can find Neil Young doing Helpless with Joni providing her fantastic backing vocals (and of course the Band providing a good backing)? I really like this version, even with Neil being so visibly and notoriously out of it. - -Monika ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 22:39:53 -0400 From: "Patty Wieloh" Subject: Perpetula Joni Covers,Volumes 71-83 I currently have the covers and would like to send them to anyone interested. I'd like to cast a vote for "In France They Kiss on Main Street." In addition to rocking, this song is very much about the essence of rock 'n roll -- adolescent rebellion. It also has five of the most descriptive words in all of rock 'n roll-dom: "Amour, Mama, not cheap display." I can't think of five words in rock lyrics that do a better job of succinctly conjuring up the 'speaker' (Joni), the person being spoken to (Mama), and their conflicting generational attitudes. - --Leadfoot Smurf .
