Read the liner notes for "PAUL SIMON". He hired David Spinoza to play acoustic for the tricky bits on "Run That Body Down" and "Me and Julio". No shame in that; it's his record. I like the colors that Spinoza added to JT's music too. But yeah, I like how Paul Simon played that loose-string bit on "Armistice Day". I think he's a pretty good songwriter. He got some unusual sounds on that record ("Paranoia Blues", "Peace Like A River"). The funny thing about Simon (for me) is that "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". He's an okay songwriter, just passes as a singer, but he has a great ear for throwing away stuff that doesn't work and putting different textures on a record. "Me and Julio" is a great example. For someone raised in NYC, those sounds are completely off the wall. For AM radio, it was completely weird but wow, what a fresh, catchy song. It's not a folkie's track. It's a producer's track but it's not over-produced. Not all new sounds were created before 1985. "Extraordinary Machine" by Fiona Apple (and her bassist/collaborator Mike Elizondo) has lots of new ideas. She'll never break through because she looks terrified on TV. More's the pity. (Thanks for recommending it, RR.) Jim L. >If you listen to Paul Simons acoustic Guitar playing on his first Solo album he is playing wonderfull finger picking guitar that hardly any artist in todays bands could duplicate !!!!!!!!! he wasnt the best, but he sure out plays Year 2000 band acoustic guitarists ( those that are in the Charts ) all they do is strum strum.> ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2007 08:06:13 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: NJC Rolling Stone's list of Guilty Pleasure Bands On Apr 13, 2007, at 10:55 PM, Motitan@aol.com wrote > > Those of you who proudly listen to Rush at top volume in your car > all summer > long, (ie thereby displaying the total lack of guilty in your > pleasure), > take note:? Rush I can see why all of these bands would be on here except for Rush, let alone putting them at number one. There is nothing cheesy in their music, the three of them Alex, Geddy, and Neil are all on the top tier as far as proficiency at their instrument (Neil is often considered the best drummer of all time in the rock genre), they have never made a mockery of themselves as other bands have, and they're still creating great music. There's not even a reason to feel guilty for listening to Rush. Putting them on this list is like telling a joke that's not even the slightest bit funny....more like huh? I remember the first time I heard him in the mid 80's. I was walking past a bar on the East Side of Milwaukee and the door was cracked open. (This was a night after CSN played here.) He was playing Neil's Ohio with some other people up on stage harmonizing. It sounded so good, I wanted to go in and listen. My sister who was with me refused. So I made it a point to come back to see him. I even requested a Joni song and he played Big Yellow Taxi. Willy is an amazing talent! Is that DVD a good Joni buy? > What are some of the highlights? > -Monika I prefer "S&L" because I enjoy that particular phase of Joni's career more, and the artists she performed with - Pat Metheney, Jaco P, Don Alias, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker - a dream team if ever there was one. I love the jazzy stuff. She does some live ones from "Mingus." I have to say that when I first heard "Miles of Aisles", I loved it. I hadn't bought it, but my sister had it. This is going back quite a while. For some reason, I never did buy it until a few years ago, around the same time as I bought "S&L". "MOA" is a bit more poppy and it's nice, but I far prefer "S&L". You really should get the DVD too. It's a lot of fun seeing them perform. Jaco is amazing to watch. And Joni has some really cool outfits and shoes. (I think I'm a bit of a shoe-aholic.) She also looks stunning. As far as the "Painting with words and music", you can also buy that as a set with the "Woman of heart and mind" DVD if you don't already have that one, and it's cheaper to buy them together than separately. Not sure if the stores sell them that way or if you'd have to buy from Amazon or some other online store. I hope you got lots of cash for your birthday! Well, a year a half late but i have finally posted my pictures from the fest in France that Laurent organised in August 2005. Some of them are a bit grainy and others are difficult to see owing to the sharp contrast of shadow and light (i'm still a camera with film person so they have been subjected to my dodgy scanning skills too). Follow this link and choose "Garret's Album". Should bring back some nice memories for some. http://www.hatstand.org/gallery/v/JoniMitchell/jonifest2005/ Any Joanna Newsom fans? Bruce Vaughn" Subject: Re: NJC Rolling Stone's list of Guilty Pleasure Bands Well, Victor, when I read that list I had quite a howl of laughter and just said to myself "Guilty as charged". Thanks to Monika for taking the time to share it for those of us who wrote Rolling Stone off years ago. If you look at that list of 25 and see how many of the artists/bands are from the "baby boomer generation" the poll obviously came from a sect of voters who could probably be described as "snot nosed little whipdicks in designer jeans" (a little Whoopi Goldberg line there). Alex, Geddy and Neil have been the whipping boys of the rock world for as long as they've existed and probably always will be. I have boxes of music publications in the garage that I've saved specfically because of the crappy reviews given albums I thought were great (Joni has quite a few in there herself) but one I remember a part of stated something to like 'listening to Rush albums is a poor man's white trash excuse not to listen to the Moody Blues' and I remember thinking That's Harsh and comparing apples to oranges as the only thing those two bands have in common is writing and recording tracks that go beyond the usual subject matter generally associated with the genre (in other words are you capable of thought beyond your genital anatomy?) E.L.O. making #2 made me smile. Jeff Lynne has more than justified himself with the body of work he's written, recorded or produced for others over the last nearly 40 years. If it's a guilty thing to listen to those albums then I'd rather be sentenced to any E.L.O. album or Jeff Lynne produced project with a pair of headphones on than listen to about 95% of the stuff artists serve up as music these days. Rush fans never die Victor but sometimes we have to justify ourselves... Bruce Vaughn" Subject: Re: Miles Of Aisles vs. Shadows And Light Monika, I'm another one who prefers S&L over MOA. The performances on S&L just seem so much more "Joni" than MOA did. I personally think that MOA was done at a time when Joni was "branching out" and wasn't 100% comfortable with it and still exploring collaborative efforts, by S&L she knew exactly where she was musically. You get Walter Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Lyle Mays, and Pat Metheny all sharing the spotlight with Joni and as the very wise Mr. Muller has already stated if you didn't "get" Mingus or in my opinion some of the tracks from DJRD, you will after seeing this live performance. The only detraction from my point of view on the S&L DVD is that it was "butchered" for some reason. A number of the tracks from the original vinyl issue and HDCD restored CD aren't on the DVD. Whether it was deterioration of the audio/video quality or Joni's choice to delete them, it is what it is, but worth every penny just to see Joni and the Persuasions perform together live on stage to end the show. Willy is one of my all-time favorite artists (even though he didn't show up until 1995 or so) I have turned a couple of listers onto Willy. He is currently touring some dates with Martin Sexton if anyone gets a chance to see this show it should prove to be well worth the price of admission as Martin Sexton is great too. Cassy and others -- I am a Willy Porter fan too! "Road Bone" happens to be one of my favorites on his High Wire Live album -- the other favorite tune is "Breathe". I first saw Willy a couple years ago when he opened for Eric Johnson. Eric was good, but I expected that. What I didn't expect was that I was completely blown away by Willy's solo opening act! I was an instant fan. But then... I saw him last November in Chicago and he was playing with a band. It was not NEARLY as good. In my opinion, he doesn't need a band - they only distract from his amazing and unique playing (and the keyboardist kept doing these really cheesy things - it was really getting on my nerves!)... So, if you do get to see Willy Porter, and if he has a band with him, try and catch him again as a solo act. Speaking of amazing solo guitarists -- has anyone on here heard or seen Tommy Emmanuel? Last year someone told me that if I haven't seen Tommy Emmanuel, I should drop everything and get tickets immediately, that he was not to be missed. I did what I was told, and wow, that person was right! There are tons of video clips of him on YouTube -- one of my favorites is this one: _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPe3NsUJ54o_ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPe3NsUJ54o) As good as that video is, it's still hard to see just how fast his had moves on the fretboard - it's way more amazing to see him at a concert - I couldn't believe my eyes, I really didn't think it was possible for a human being to play an acoustic guitar like that!
