Put on your anti-army boots, Mother McKay! Put the newspaper right in his face. Every day. Don't stop. And talk at him (even though they appear not to listen, something gets through, I think). Maybe you want to print this story out for Mathew: http://www.gsfso.org/DeathofAMarine.html or leave this poem by his cereal -- the author was not much older than him when she wrote it: A Nation Rocked to Sleep by Carly Sheehan Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son? The torrential rains of a mother's weeping will never be done. They call him a hero, you should be glad that he's one, but have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son? Have you ever heard the sound of a father holding back his cries? He must be brave because his boy died for another man's lies. The only grief he allows himself are long, deep sighs. Have you ever heard the sound of a father holding back his cries? Have you ever heard the sound of taps played at your brother's grave? They say that he died so that the flag will continue to wave, but I believe he died because they had oil to save. Have you ever heard the sound of taps played at your brother's grave? Have you ever heard the sound of a nation being rocked to sleep? The leaders want to keep you numb so the pain won't be so deep, but if we the people let them continue, another mother will weep. Have you ever heard the sound of a nation being rocked to sleep? - ----- I saw a very moving documentary last week that had my eyepaint running down. I think it was called "A Soldier's Story" but I can't find it anywhere right now. Lots of dead and bloody bodies, and PTSDed soldiers. That would be a good DVD for Mathew to watch. I'll look around for it. If you need any more "ammo", let me know! Peace, P. Margaret Elizabeth _________________________________________________________________ Download Messenger. I could care less where they sit in the rock pantheon of great bands. The reason I go to see any band is to see/hear a good performance. I'm also going to see Rush in June and am excited about that as well. When I saw them a couple of years ago they played for nearly three hours and sounded as good or better than they ever have. Vienna Teng is actually playing in Atlanta this Tuesday at Variety though I have a possible conflict and may not be able to make it. I imagine she would put on a fabulous show. Victor ps. Go Lightning!!! pps. I saw Depeche Mode back in '96 or so w/ Stabbing Westward. They were okay...we had free invites and there was an open keg so I don't remember terribly much about the show really. Their music has never particularly engaged me much so the alcohol probably helped me enjoy it. To each his own... No, but neither are synths-at this point they've been in popular music for forty-some years, just a little less than electric guitars. If you really want original music, you will have to invent a totally new instrument. And then play it well! Call me naive...call me idealistic but I think the guitar has a world of possibilities! Sure, I do agree, no one right now is doing anything original with the guitar but every now and then a "swoop" comes along bringing something special in it. I just can't give in to believing that originality and art is dead. No way. Maybe it's hibernating, but it's certainly not dead. The same goes for synths and keyboards. There's no end to these instruments. Something new can be found. Musicians just have to look! But some probably think, why look when we can sound like some other band, have a hit, make some $$$ and that's it. I think it's all about the "buck" rather than the "bang" these days as far as popular music goes. The record industry is to blame a bit for that as well. They just want another "Nickelback" to give 'em a hit, dump them, and find yet another "Nickelback." That's how I see it anyway. I mean, I see more originality going to open mic nights and playing at shows with fellow musicians/bands than I hear in the Top 40 today. That's just my opinion though. At least half those mentioned had traditional elements to all or some of their music. The answer is keep on keeping on. Just play as journeymen (and women) - and one of these decades somebody'll think of something new. In the mean time, you have to dig deeper to find the excellent. Its no longer handed to us on a silver platter, as back then. The last Red Hot Chili Peppers album had some guitar and bass and production stuff I've never heard before. New textures and ways of playing. All within the rock and roll context (thank you jesus) but still way diff. There's just lots to wade through. Some one who came up with her own style in the last 10 years or so is Laura Love. There was nothing like that before, on the whole. Whole new fresh ways of layering sounds and mixing styles. New recipes! I'll be the 1st to agree that the 60's and 70's spawned amazingly fantastic stuff, but there's still good new stuff - its just alot of it is not on mainstream radio. So you gotta hunt! But maybe people should HAVE to hunt. Then when you *find* it makes it all the more sweet and like a miracle. I would love to be able to go to some of what are thought of as "folk" festivals, but really some kick ass original songwriting is coming through there. Wish to go to Falcon Ridge someday. Would get to see Richard Shindell! there's a case right there. Proof that fine songwriting is not dead. And the man plays some very tasty guitar, too. Also, what did Paul Simon do on guitar, specifically on guitar, that was so different? I mean, yeah, in his early days before he hurt his hand, he did a competent "Angie".....but from what I understand it was all the rage to learn that tune back then. Otherwise his guitar playing was a tool for getting the songs across, and beautifully, but not sure I'd put Paul out there as a guitar god. If you do, can I request a favor from you? Pretty please. The little jazz musician/vocalist wannabe over here would love to have the Joni version copy of Goodbye Porkpie Hat. Or Dry Cleaner from Des Moines. Heck, I'd love them all, but I know I can't be greedy or nuthin'. So GPPH or DCFDM would be just fine. GPPH is my first choice however. I'm pretty skeptical on it even being in the songbook because of the fact that she technically didn't write it, but it is so different from Mingus's that I am hoping she did put it in there. You know who I need? Larry Klein. Anyone got his number? Or hell, maybe even Joni's would be fine. heh heh So, I must admit, I am a little surprised that not one person replied to my idea for a summer Jonifest in Vermont. From what I know Henry just has some kind of natural gift with photography. I don't think he does anything special to enhance the photographs. He just has something that is magic. I wish I could learn it! Last I knew a few years ago he was still taking photos with his 40 year old Nikon camera. Those old Nikons were something else. I inherited a similar one years ago and the photos are like nothing I have ever seen from any other camera. My Nikon still works but needs some work but no one will touch it because they are so valuable. Many years ago some of us jmdlers from SoCal went to his exhibit in Newport Beach and were just blown away. I called him the Ansel Adams of rock photography. About a year later I was on the CSN list and some people from L.A. were planning a get together at a dive bar by the airport to see a good CSN tribute band. I was mostly a lurker on that list but thought maybe I should venture out and meet a few people from that list. I dragged a friend along and when we walked in this group of three guys greeted us. Turned out they were Henry Diltz, Dave Zimmer (who wrote two of the CSN biographies) and Scott Oxman (the official archivist who has provided most all the photos and other artifacts for the CSN box set, Buffalo Springfield box set and several Neil Young among other projects). Talk about hitting the mother lode! ;-) It was one of the most fantastic nights of my life. We sang and drank and danced and closed the joint and had the best time together! It was a warm night and my friend and I were wearing sandals. Henry spotted this interesting wood inlay logo on the floor featuring billiard balls and pool cues. He asked my friend and I to step into the logo and took several photos of our pedicured sandaled toes framing the logo. I have met Henry a couple of times since and have always wanted to ask him if I could get a print! But I figure he probably takes 1000s of shots all over and it would be burdensome for him to try to go back and find those negatives! I have always raved about him here. He is a truly fantastic person - very friendly and warm and completely without any pretensions or affectations whatsoever. I'm not sure if the video Kenny saw was the Under the Covers DVD or part of something called his "slide show" which I've heard is something else. At any rate, he told me once that he would be happy to come over and do the slide show if we ever have a SoCal Jonifest event! I still have his card so maybe someday! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2007 07:11:42 +0200 From: "ron" Subject: Fw: top 20 concert lineups n(NJC) hi one of the top 5 classics from may 2003: The Top 20 Concert Lineups We'd Like to See 20..
