It seemed a kind of sad moment and although I never bought any of his own work I am sure that many of my LPs have his name in the credits. Apropos of nothing at all I was thinking of my lunch in Grand Central Station's 'Oyster Bar' on the last day in NYC before returning from fest last Wednesday. That lunchtime I ate a nice plate of scrod and it was a fish that I had never (knowingly) eaten before and last night I resolved to check out the Webster's to see what it was. My fingers dived into the text in the 'S' section and, lo and behold, at the top of the first column on page 1348 was the following entry: 'sneaky pete' - slang, "a homemade or an inferior commercially produced liquor or wine". I did see a Diltz exhibit here in downtown San Diego where he was there chatting with people. (Ask Kakki to chime in on her experiences with Diltz). The movie "Almost Famous" was out around that time and I remember gazing at those beautiful photos in Henry's exhibition and thinking, 'No, no, forget that made-up movie. *This* is the real experience!' I also visited his retail store in Hollywood not too long ago (right after going to the gallery to see her "Green Flag Song" exhibit) and then I know he has another store in La Jolla right near me. But at no time did I see any video footage and now I'm completely jealous. Dang! Now I have to fly to Florida?? BTW, has anyone had the experience of getting some kind of notice that the Joni Mitchell website has expired? It is my default setting and twice now when I've opened the internet, I've gotten that notice. I thought Les said he'd received enough in donations from the Fest to keep the site going another six months. Send the money, Les! My heart can't take this! Twice while in Starbucks, "Help Me" has been playing. It's along the lines of, "I'm stupid and ugly and no one is ever going to love me, so I might as well join the army", which is not unlike his wanting to run away from home at the age of 4 or so because people were "being mean" to him. I had the same experience when I purchased, some years ago, Lucinda Williams' Car Wheels on a Gravel Road or whatever it was called. I bought it because everyone on the list loved it so much, and it was listers who turned me on to Lauryn Hill and Radiohead, so I was greatly disappointed when I heard it for the first time - I quickly renamed it Fingernails on a Chalk Board. Ditto the same disappointment with the Magnolia soundtrack. I actually was a big Til Tuesday fan, and I still think "What about Love" is severely underrated, but OMG, Magnolia was such a snoozer for me... It makes you wonder "what is it that I am not getting?" Anyway, I too will add that other than Pirates, I own nothing else from Rickie Lee - Wait, I had another one I got on clearance - Pop Pop or some stupid title, and hated it. I think I actually gave it away. So I don't get the Rickie Lee thing either, but feel like I should. All of this started when people berated Joni for using Synths on her previews of her new album some of which I think were early mixes What is wrong with using Syths on her albums ??? its not as if playing Guitar is anything new or original, Is it?? I mean do music lovers of the last 6 years think that Guitar music is original to the Century 2000 Of coarse some of you say its boring to play Guitar solos for 2 or 3 minutes, no all we get is Strum Strum Strum Strum VERY BORING !!!!!!!!!! The plain fact is that many bands cant play Electric Guitar solos to save there life, let alone Keyboard Solos I repeat there is nothing new you can do with the Guitar that Pat Metheny, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmie Page, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Robert Fripp, Ray Vaughn, Duane Allman, Lowell George, Paul simon and Joni Mitchell and many more specialist acoustic Guitar players that the world has seen throught the 60' 70' and 80'... havent done already. My point to another person is that leave Joni alone, there are 100 - 200 bands out there that sing boring stupid lyrics with tottaly non original riffs that they think are original to this Century!!!!!!! there tracks have hardly no Production on them all you hear is strum strum strum boring Melodys bass and drums, some thrashing the living daytlights out of them like the guy on the Muppet show. But are you saying this that these bands will rank with the all time greats???? ask your self the Question why there is so much excitment to the Police reforming soon,, I know thy Answer do you Stewart Copeland, great truly great drummer exciting drummer, Sting a great Bass player who comes up with great riffs, Andy Summer a much copied guitar player with tremendous talent, and of course Sting has written some of the most marveolous Melodys of the last two decades in PoP songs, Yes Melodys. This is why people look forward to the up and coming Police concerts. There is no comparable Band of the 2000 years around, all we get is strum strum strum thrash thrash thrash (and dont say U2 there another band from the 80's ) But this is ok!!!!!!! everybody has the right to choose there own music !!! just dont accuse Joni's music ever of being uncoool or not fashionable when the FASHION SO CALLED IS PLAYING GUITARS a medium that in originality is spent. and I still say that Depeche Mode are very ORIGINAL no one else plays there music the way they do I look forward to when keyboard players come to the fore in Pop Rock music again. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward. Life happens too fast for you ever to think about it. If you could just persuade people of this, but they insist on amassing information. Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter could be said to remedy anything. It shows how easy it is to do and how credulous people are. Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone. The universe is a big place, perhaps the biggest. The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal. This is a tale of a meeting of two lonesome, skinny, fairly old white men on a planet which was dying fast. To whom it may concern: It is springtime. It is late afternoon. True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country. We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be. We could have saved the Earth but we were too damned cheap. What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured. Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say? She tells two stories, one about writing "Two Grey Rooms" where she basically sat on the music for about 10 years waiting for the right lyric. She said that she kept hearing French Dipthongs in her head. The other is about the writing of Magdalene Laundries, where she set out to write a happy song, tuned her guitar to the "sounds of the day" (birds & such) and then saw a headline in the newspaper about the Scandal concerning the excavation of the unmarked graves at the Laundries. With that in her mind, she composed the not-so-happy lyrics to that song. Hope that helps. Jonifestb& my bnewbieb reviewb& On March 24th, I took a plane from Denver to New York. I spent 5 days visiting friends in White Plains, Rye, and Manhattan before meeting up with Les Irvin (my Jonifest Ambassador) on Thursday March 29th at the Port Authority. We took a 3-hour bus ride up to Big Indian and after some conversation and music-sharing with Les, I dozed while listening to the "Clouds" album. When I opened my eyes, we were riding through a beautiful scene - a rolling brook that wound back and forth, lots of trees, a winding road. I had slept through our stop in the town of Woodstock. We arrived at Big Indian around 3:30 in the afternoon and were greeted cheerfully by Chris Marshall and the JMDL-mobile (also known as Ashara's car). Chris assured us he would stay on the right side of the road all the way up to Full Moon (thanks Chris!)... We arrived at the Full Moon resort, a nice, quaint set of buildings in a little clearing. We were some of the first few people to arrive at Jonifest. Though it was my first time attending this event, and though Les was the only person I had met before the fest, this place looked all too familiar to me. The people seemed familiar too. I met Ashara, Mike Walsh (fellow newbie), and Barb. I jumped right into the fun, and people seemed to accept me as though I'd been there before. I got my room number and put my belongings upstairs, then came back down to visit and to wait for dinnertime. The food at this place was simply amazing! By the way, whoever thought of putting ginger root (my favorite ingredient!) in whipped butter is a genius! We had a nice little table-full of people at dinner, and more people arrived as we were eating. I remember Ashara saying bI can hear Kaybs laugh upstairs bb& and then as a group of people came down the steps, I met Sue C (and Suze G?) and Kay and Les Ross and Jenny. More and more nice people kept floating into the room. There were hugs and smiles. I liked it! On Thursday evening, we went to the performance space and had a little sing-along. I remember Chris asking me if I was going to lead some singing. Being a newbie and having no idea what to expect, I sort of felt timid and wanted to take it all in at first. I thought "what am I getting myself into? I'm sure these people are all really good at music, I'll just lay low and maybe play along with the others if I can"... I was eager to participate as well, of course, but if we were playing ball Joni all the time,b I had just a handful of songs that I could play. Well, fortunately the set list varied greatly between all kinds of music and I ended up playing more music than I thought I would that night. I really enjoyed hearing what others played as well - Les R played several beautiful numbers including Woman of Heart and Mind, Kay played several Joni pieces and we were also treated to her incredible duet with Jenny of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon". WOW. An unexpected treat: our bartender, Arleigh, sat quietly for most of the time, and eventually asked if she could borrow a guitar to play a piece. Even the bartender at this place was an amazing musician! I must say, I'm really glad I was there on Thursday night, since I got to know a smaller group of people first. On Friday, Chris, Les I, Les R, Jenny, and I headed out to Woodstock. Chris needed an amp for his bass guitar and we were going to take a look at the town and have lunch as well. First on our agenda was to find a music store. Chris used a very handy portable GPS - he looked up music stores in Woodstock, and the system navigated us on this very roundabout route to "Abrams Music" (first in the alphabetical listing). But... we ended up at someone's house. Now, there were indeed many guitar boxes outside, and it did say bAbramsb on the mailbox, but were we in Woodstock? If we were, it wasn't the area we had intended to hit. We had Chris go to the door and see if anyone was home and if they might have some guitar strings or perhaps a bass amp. Nobody was there and we decided to reprogram the GPS to hit the more obvious "Woodstock Music Shop" location. That did take us into town, and Chris found his amp, and simultaneously salivated over some other bass guitars in the shop. We found a little restaurant where we had our lunch, and we stopped at CVS for things like water and whatnot. Then it was time to head back to Full Moon. When we got back to the 'fest, more people had arrived. I met the "Bobs" (Muller and Murphy) and I'm sure I met others but you know how it is when you're brand new and there are lots of new names and faces (well except that we had many double/triple names, which made things easier -- 3 Bobs, 3 Sues, 2 Les's, 2 Mikes, 2 Jeffs)... so I'm sorry if I have left anyone off so far... On Friday afternoon, people were practicing for their performances. Some attempted to rope me in, but I really just wanted to be an observer in the beginning. I remember sitting on the couch by the fireplace and meeting fellow newbies Monika and Nickey. They had driven all the way from Ohio, and Nickey, who hadn't really listened to much Joni music before, got a good dose of it on the way to the fest. I was really impressed that someone would come to a music festival based on an artist they didn't know much about. Monika and Nickey were very happy to be there, and excited to assume their roles as raffle ticket salespeople - good for them for starting a buzz about it quite early! Then there was a little opening program for everyone in the performance area. We played the game where the name of a famous person/character is placed on each person's back and we had to ask yes or no questions to figure out our identities. I was Vincent Van Gogh. Soon it was time for dinner and I was meeting more people at every meal. I remember talking with Michelle Mercer, a newbie who was working on a book that would include some Joni content. After that, we had performance slots. Jenny was first up. She sang some beautiful original songs and Chris and Les R backed her up. The first song she sang is still playing in my head (I know someone else mentioned that on here as well -- Jenny what's your special ingredient to get your songs stuck in our minds?) Les R played a brilliant set that night as well, and so did Kay, and also Sue M. I really enjoyed the variety of performances and was inspired (and highly encouraged by my trusty ambassador, thanks Les!) to sign up for a slot for the next night. I continued to meet more people during the evening, including Adriano, who was the master videographer (despite having only one PAL-format videotape since the others were all inside his lost luggage), Bob Muller and Craig bHappyb Jenkins, who posed for some great goofy photos. Song circle was bigger on Friday night with more people there, and we got to hear Chris on his bass (newly ampbd) as well. Songs were played by Bob Sartorius, Kay, Jeff, and Sue M, and more... we sang for quite a while once again. I remember meeting Kenny B at this song circle, as I decided to break into some Crosby, Stills, & Nash music. I really like song circlesb& random songs popping out of the woodwork, and harmonies galore! Now I have to say, after hearing stories of pool room jams until sunrise, I came to Jonifest prepared to get very little sleep, and I do believe I was one of the last people asleep each night, but I still got more sleep than expected (I suppose that should be considered a bonus)! I didnbt expect to be awake in time to catch breakfast, and yet I actually did catch the tail-end of a morning meal or two, but not on Saturday morning (something about the glum looks on Chris and Les Rbs faces when they didnbt get their bacon the day beforeb& I just wasnbt motivated to get there!!). I slept in until after 10 and leisurely got ready and made my way to part of a songwriterbs circle led by Jenny. I wish I had been at all of it b I have never written a song myself, but itbs always interesting to hear what other people write and how they go about their writing process. After the songwriterbs circle, we headed to lunch, where we (those at my table) were treated to some very intriguing (and enlightening?) stories, mostly provided by Craig, Happy the Man. (Craig, you sure know how to make people pay attention!) Then we went outside on the porch and took some great group photos, since it was a nice sunny day. Next it was back to the performance space for the special surprise that youbve heard much about b the recordings of the early Joni sessions. Some were from as early as 1964(?) when she was still called Joni Anderson, others were from her duo days with Chuck Mitchell. It was amazing to think that Joni was so incredibly young in these recordings, and already writing such complex music. I enjoyed listening to the tracks, and between every couple songs, names were drawn for raffle prizes. There were so many raffle items, I think just about everyone went home with at least a few goodies (especially the bartender b how did she rig the raffle?) and Laree won a stack of songbooks! Hey Laree b I hope we get to hear you sing some of the songs in those books next year! As the early Joni recordings and raffle went on for a few hours, I eventually slipped out to work on my set b I was scheduled to go onstage (for my first time) that evening. As I practiced outside, Chuck Eisenhardt sat nearby, and then Mike Pritchard came by and kept me company for a bitb&such nice fellows. I was glad to have the first performance slot that evening, because then I could relax for the rest of the night. It really was my first time doing a set of songs like this. I decided to break myself in by playing 2 songs by the Indigo Girls (since Ibve listened to and played their songs for so many years) and the songs wouldnbt have sounded the same without Jenny Goodspeed, who was so wonderful to help me (in addition to many others) by singing harmonies (and I also liked not being up there alone for my first couple songs b thanks for the company!)b& I played 3 Joni songs after that and everyone was very nice and supportive. Thank you ALL for your kindness and for making me feel so great about my first bcoffee-shop-styleb stage set!!! I enjoyed the rest of the performances, including the Bobs (Muller and Sartorius), and Sue C, and Broadway Barb with her bBarb-ettesb (wow, lots of bBb s), during which Kenny and Donna danced a 2-step (Kenny - I hope your dance card isn't already full for next year! Can you pencil me in for a jitterbug or a lindy hop??) And then there was Sugarpants -- I mean Kinderpants. I saw it on the schedule, but really had no idea what I was about to see. I think I STILL have no idea what I saw! ;-) Song circle on Saturday was, again, a great event. We had harmonies ringing out from Jill and more great bass notes from Chris, and box-beating and singing from Bob M, many Joni songs from Sue M and Kay and Jeffb& and I think we sang all of the songs on the Court and Spark album! Another fun late night! Sundayb& it was a misty, rainy day. Some videos were shown in the performance space, and I was mostly in the downstairs area of the Valley View house, just hanging out on the couches with whoever was there. Some were playing the piano on the porch, some were on the internet, some were playing instruments, and then there was Chris, who found a fun new way to be amused by capos (see photos)b& That evening on the stage we got to hear Chuck Eisenhardt play keys and dulcimer, accompanied for part of the time by Les I. Then we heard from my roommate Catherine McKay on guitar (a job well done b I never wouldbve known that she hadnbt played guitar in a long time!), and despite saying she wouldnbt be playing this year, Ashara got up and sang J Soon after, we had a very special Jonifest stage debut from Patrick (Congrats!!), and we heard a really nice set by Laura (like others, I also hadnbt heard bDanny Californiab before b you sounded great!) Then, Monika rocked with her own originals and was also quite comical as she spoke between her songs. I sat in the front with Mike P and Craig, and Monika kept us laughing. We also had fun getting snapshots of each other during this time b Bob Murphy was pretty camera happy and we got Mike P to crack some great smiles. Then Nickey came up to the stage. Little did we know, she had been talking with Patrick about his having never done a stage performance despite being at a number of Jonifests. Apparently she told him that if he would get up there and sing, she would too, and she sure kept her end of the deal! What a neat thing b herebs a newbie who encouraged a seasoned veteran to get up and perform. In addition, Nickey had hardly heard much of Jonibs music before coming to the bfest, and announced onstage that she was now a fan, and she thought that this festival was a really great way to be exposed to an artistbs work. After telling us she wasnbt much of a singer, she sang a couple songs and invited anyone and everyone to come up to the stage to sing Big Yellow Taxi. Such nice collaboration! Finally, to finish off the night, Kay (our tireless sound woman extraordinaire -- thank you so very much for all of your energy, patience, attention to detail, and super hard work!!!) got up to play some tunes on the dulcimer. What a multitalented gal! (whoa b I just turned around and looked out the window and itbs snowing outsideb& but I digressb&) So onto Sunday late night b another great song circle. This one lasted until 4 a.m.! It was fun collaborating with Les R and Chris to play/sing b Sailing to Philadelphiab (Kay b where are the photos you took while using Chrisb head as a tripod?) Later on a few of us cut the rug a bit with some really goofy dancing (again, see photos)b& some goodbyes were already being said, as several people would be getting on the road early the next morning. L Monday morning, it was sunny out. I made a quick stop in the dining room for (the end of) breakfast, took a few fun photos outside with those who were still in attendance, gave lots of hugs and said goodbyes, and then went to pack up my belongings. Bob Sartorius so graciously offered to drive me to New Jersey (thank you so much Bob!), where I was going to spend the night visiting Eric (another musical friend of mine) and his family before flying to St. Louis to see my family for a couple days. Post-Jonifest: Monday happened to be the first night of Passover, and there were close to 20 family members at Ericbs home for dinner. While it wasnbt exactly like Jonifest, we did have quite the bsong circleb after dinner! The next morning, Eric drove me all the way to LaGuardia (what a friend!) and I flew to St. Louis and helped my mom prepare a Passover meal for our family. We had about 17 people including some out-of-town cousins and their kids, and my 97-year-old grandmother (a rare treat b itbs very difficult to take her out of the nursing home so she hadnbt been to our house in about 2 years. She was very happy to be there!) As the circle of life keeps going around, we woke up the next morning to a phone call that my stepdadbs father had passed away overnight. He had a very long and full life, and at almost 92 years old, he was still living semi-independently. This was the way he wouldbve wanted to go. I returned to Denver a week ago today, and got straight back into work, all the while reminding myself of the fun, participatory sing-alongs of Jonifest. I have read all of your postings to the list and looked at all the photos posted so far. I miss you! I miss Full Moon! Webve had snow and sun and snow again (such odd weather!)b& and Ibm finally posting this message, along with many photos to come. And a week from today, I will be leaving to spend 11 days in Peru. I know Ibll still be thinking of the great memories I have from Jonifest while Ibm there. Special thanks to my Jonifest Ambassador, Les Irvin, for encouraging me to attend Jonifest, for answering all of my questions, for meeting up to take the bus together, for introducing me to these great people, and for encouraging my participation in sing-alongs and the stage performace slot. Ibm also glad to have another Jonifest person in Colorado! (and to any of you non-Colorado dwellers, please come visit!) And to Ashara (my Jonifest sister), thanks also for encouraging me to come out to the fest (and for planning it!), and for helping Les to push me boff of the fence and into the gardenbb& To everyone, thank you for the great memories, for making a newbie feel so incredibly welcome, and for your warmth and smiles and harmonies and laughs and hugs! I feel lucky to have spent time with you and I look forward to our paths crossing again one day!!
