Luckily for me my drive to Full Moon is just under two hours through all back roads. Thursday was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Snow melt was in full swing and all the streams and rivers were swollen and rapid. The sun shine brightly as well. My car was stuffed with a smattering of items I threw in as I realized I was behind schedule. Got there Thursday and walked into the main house and was welcomed by a circle of smiling faces including Ashara, Chris, Les Irvin and two newbies Angela from Denver and Mike from Harrisburg, PA. Mike plays clarinet--next year Mike you have a ready made solo in For Free-- Bring the licorice stick!!!! For me at the fest there is always great relaxation and yet underlying nervousness until my set is over. It is a time to forget the day to day and just commune with song and good food and lovely people. It also helps that there are some extremely funny people who attend. Kudos to the chef, I thought the food was awesome. Good clean food oozing with taste and flavor. That white bean soup--any way to get that recipe??? Portion control was out of the question!!!! Thursday night was simply relaxed. We quickly found this years human juke box, Angela from Denver. Thank you Angela for being so accommodating to all of our requests. In song circle I was lucky enough to set next to Les Ross with that voice--its like butter!!!! Huge surprise was the bartender, Arleigh after sitting in the song circle for hours observing asked to see a guitar and proceeded to sing her bum off. oh well Im in a band with my family she meekly replied. What can you say, there is another Jonifest moment to cherish--those unexpected gifts from every which way. Friday was much more arrivals from people who had taken a ferry to the highway then drove to a pontoon plane --took a plane to a taxi And a taxi to a train--well ok maybe not a pontoon plane but everything else happened. People who had been traveling sooooooo long and then there was poor Adriano who lost his luggage on his venture from Europe. He gets the award for keeping it together amid adversity with quips on Saturday afternoon like do I stink yet? Not to mention he literally hitch hiked to get to Full Moon--you cant make this stuff up!!!!. First off MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR PROPS to Kay for running the sound. She did an AWESOME job. She made it look easy and seamless AND SOUND GREAT--wow not only can she play and sing beautifully, all with a fabulous sense of humor, she is a techie as well--- who knew??? Friday night Sue McNamara got out of her car and got up on stage and started her set--talk about a pro. Loved that hat too Sue. Song circle Friday night there were so many contributions from newbies which made the night very special. They knew all the words and melodies --ok they belong for sure!!!! Craig Happy The Man lived up to his name throughout the fest! Lying in bed Saturday morning I hear the rehearsal of the Bobs (Muller and Sartorius). I thought how lucky am I, now if I could only take them home and do that every morning--what a way to welcome the world. Saturday afternoon hearing the early recordings of Joni sure was a surprise and a major treat. It was so interesting to hear her evolution as an artist. Monika and Nickey ran the raffle tickets. Kenny B contributed many beautiful mugs and shirts. Angela proved that not only can she sing and play her bum off --she also makes absolutely beautiful jewelry. Laree and the bartender cleaned up at the raffle with song books and the very high end stuff. Adriano was of course given a luggage tag to prevent future luggage mishaps next Jonifest. Smurf as usual kept every laughing. Musically this year I was least prepared than any other year by far. I want to especially thank Les Irvin for being so supportive, helpful and patient in putting together the set of Loudon Wainwright III songs. For more info on Loudon, a much under appreciated singer/songwriter go to http://www.lwiii.com/. Les, also a Loudon fan, offered great input and it was wonderful collaborating with him. He was extremely generous with his time for which I was most grateful!!!!! Both Les and Chris would wait patiently while I was trying to pull together the components. Thank you so much to Chris and Bob the box banger ( a moniker he loves--he even offered to pay me money if I would continually and loudly refer to him by that handle ) for the funky rhythm section. Also major thanks to Kay and Jenny for putting on the most beautiful harmonies and being so much fun putting together our dance moves. With Loudons awesome music and screamingly funny lyrics it really was a song and a celebration. Sunday night was Patricks FIRST(of what will for sure be many) Jonifest debut and it rocked. Kay also amazed and Kay and Jenny with that harmony blend--God had entered the building!!!!! Also Nickey and Monika got up there and were both irreverent as hell--I loved it!!!! There is nothing like being put in your place by a 20 year old newbie!!!! Thanks gals for contributing so much! Catherine got up there and showed us how it is done--apologizing the entire time -- this gal obviously has no clue how talented she is!!!!!! Was so nice to spend some quality time with Rosie as well!!! The two sisters that used to work at Full Moon showed up Sunday night as well. We were looking through the scrap books from years past and caught up with how everyone is doing. They were tickled to see the great picture in the scrap book of the two of them in the performance space looking on. It was with great sorrow that I had to deliver the grim news when they asked me, Hows Jack, we love him. Jack Neilson was in my heart at many moments during the fest. Although I miss him greatly I feel very thankful to have shared wonderful times and music with him. He will ALWAYS be a shining star for me. I loved seeing Brenda and her boys working out tunes with Chuck, that was a super Jonifest moment! It was also great to see Mike P hanging out too! Then there are our founders. I asked Les Irvin Do you ever take in that you started all this? His response If I didnt do it someone else would have. How humble is that!!! Then there is Ashara who is always so generous and attentive to every little detail. Steppenwolf was huge for me, and I haven't looked at in ages. But I do recall in the preface, or intro, something about it not really being a young person's book. And yet so many who were reading it were in fact extremely young. I find alot of that aspect in the culture of the 60 and early 70's. A kind of age weariness well beyond the years of the people. Kind of a beat thing I guess. But even referring to regular pelvic affiliates as one's "old man" or "old lady" ties into that. It seems weird now to think of people in their early 20's, still wet behind the ears, using those phrases. Even understanding the blues connection, and their desire to use that language for the sake of hipness. Seems overly world-weary. Would be interesting to read Steppenwolf again, now that I'm probably at least as old as Harry Haller. It's not her fault she was a psycho puppy. She was either fecked up by previous owners or brain-damaged. I doubt she thought it over and chose to chomp on you. Musical highlights for me were practically everyone and it seems criminal to mention some but not all but I'll try to be as discreet as possible. If I missed you, I'm sorry. First, and not in order of importance, I'd like to admit that although I've heard of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers I had not heard their 'Danny California' (I live in Europe). After hearing Laura nail it like John Henry drove steel I don't think I want to hear the Peppers' version. For me, Laura's version is now the original. Magnificent. Jenny, Angela, Chris M and Sue Mac. All wonderful (and wonderfully frequent) performers in their own rite, ha ha, but above all they are/were mega-generous souls who bust their collective guts in helping other people get miked up, backed up and mixed (up) properly. Hats off to you all. You were priceless. Jill Haas was also very important in 'moving things along'. Thanks Jill for making the effort to come out to Fest. On the 'mere' performers, again so many to mention and some names I'd only heard from previous fests. Donna, Sue Cameron, Bob Sartorius and Barbara L all surprised me with their singing and playing skills. Monika was a pleasant surprise, especially when she said she hadn't heard Ani di Franco, Someone must hook Monika up to a big mp3 collection of Ani's music soon, right Bob? The Bobs and the Leslies for everything they did to keep me amused; it was great to meet Muller again, no longer an American lost in France but an American in his element, and great to meet Murphy for the first time, although no Henny schtick, wattzwiddat? Also thanks to Les I for the mandolin, guitar and the hiking trip, and for not exercising his quadruple voting rights. Les Ross, what else can you say about his playing and singing that hasn't been said? I can't get enough of it. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him in New York after fest and enjoyed his company, and a Bushmills or four, immensely. Slainte, Les. When you finish your CD, call me.
