Even though I haven't written anything for ages I've been following your reports on both fest-issues and more life in general stuff. And I've been thinking about you! You know - I believe you all offer some profound impact on my life, even though I haven't been able to communicate it for some time. One current example: I'm listening to the great Cyndi Lauper Why? Well, there are two mainreasons: I heard and saw her faboulous performance of Carey distributed through this warm arrangement. Then someone else mentioned Cyndi doing a "True colors" tour. And there she was, right in front of me, at my great music library in Oslo - Deichmann - and what else could I do, of course I picked her music up. And she is just great. Her energy from 1983, well appeals to me... The eighities wasn't all cold and cool. Also what I relly love with this list - even in my delurking phases - is the possibility to follow Joni on her journey. I've read some of the latest interviews with growing interest and expactations, I heard the short-cut someone sent about the interview whith Aanda (Ghost??) I hope you can cope with my scandinavian english - a long delurking phase makes it harder to write. So my regards to my fellow scandinavians Marion and Bene for keeping up a most sophisticated english :-) I am excited to read about Joni's new album. I also find it inspiring to listen to the tracks from the forthcoming tribute album. I loved Prince's version of "A case of you" And I'm so loooking forward to get a computer and internet in my own home. Maybe - then I will break through this delruking more often... Best ! Oddmund, Norway Like Bene - I would really love to attend a Joni-fest. I'm not reformed yet. Still quite unorganized...But to be a part of it, well... it sounds like a very warm arrangement ! It sounds like she's going to oblige! Wonderful! I've hard so many good things about Bonnie Raitt trying to help other musicians. It makes me feel real good to know that her and Dennis Quaid care so much! Please if you can, thank them for us! I was just thinking about New Orleans and wondering what progress has been made lately on rebuilding the city. Is life beginning to get even remotely back to normal? New Orleans has been out of the news radar for a minute but it's always on my mind. I can't believe it's taking this long to even get things back to status quo. My heart goes out to the musicians especially. It's hard enough to make a living when conditions are right, but to have a hurricane sweep everything away...it has to be so hard. When I was hanging out with you and talking to Carl in the Preservation Hall Band, it broke my heart to know that a lot of his compositions were lost in the waters of Katrina. Sitting right across from him, it hit me in the face what personal devestation occurred for so many musicians. I saw another one of your own on a Grouper video clip, Marc Broussard. He did a live rendition of Home and the beginning took me right to church Paz! He sang, "They're trying to wash us away..." and you could feel the pain of people trying to survive. I know you don't my friend, but I don't want to forget that there are so many people, especially musicians trying to put their lives back together. Please let us know what we can do to help with this auction. Love, Sherelle Michael wrote: This is so funny. I just emailed a friend in SF who is Jon Cleary's manager to ask if he could get Bonnie to donate a guitar (signed) or some other artwork or memorabilia for us to auction on May 3 during Jazz Fest for the Renew Our Music Fund (see www.nomhrf.org for more history on what we do). We have several Herman Leonard original fotos and Annie Leibovitz as well as a signed one of a kind Gibson Les Paul signed by The Edge from U2 to auction off on May 3 between the jazz fest weekends. I will be posting on the details of this very cool initiative to raise money for Renew Our Music. Bonnie and my pal Dennis Quaid have already done so much for us here in N.O. but I thought it would be a great idea to have something from her on this auction. Let me tell you, if you want to move somewhere don't let it be Ohio! Some say, "oh but I like the 4 seasons" to try and sweeten Ohio up but I assure you Ohio has two seasons--winter and summer! A few weeks ago, or maybe a month ago, in one week Ohio got a load of everything. In one week it started out in the 70's, ended in the 30's with snow....the neighboring county to me was hit by a tornado....and a county south of me got hit with a minor earthquake (which is very, very, very rare but still). I started reading it the other day and am currently going into 1974 in the book. I must say, it is very, very, very well written thus far. I also appreciate the author explaining things rather objectively. Often in bio's, you get a very opinionated, colored depiction of a person shaded in with the author's own perspective---leaning towards either the "I love the ground this person walks on" or "Can you believe the nerve of this person?" So I have to say, it is very refreshing to find something more objective (though I suppose with everything anyone writes a bit of themselves go into it). In the book, I can't believe it has a quote from an interview with Marc David Chapman in it. That part made me cringe when I read it and still gives me chills. If you haven't read the book (which most of you probably have?), Chapman says he now listens to more soothing music and has been listening to and playing on guitar a lot of Joni Mitchell. How every disturbing. Now I believe in change as much as the next guy, but I think as far as Chapman is concerned, his changes should be restricted to behind bars. He's done enough damage. - -Monika ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 12:16:59 -0400 From: "Jenny Goodspeed" Subject: Re: Jonifest next year Hi Monika, I've often imagined doing this myself, but I don't have a camcorder, which limits me somewhat. : ) Go for it. Angela Apod. A true and worthy incumbent of the Victor Victorola mantle and contender for MVP Suma Cum Laude. 2. Danni California. Dr Laura take a bow. and another. and, yes, another. 3. Song Circle every night but especials for the Bob M-instigated (i think) Court and Spark sessions. 4. Everything Jenny G was involved with. 5. Everything Kay Ashley was involved with. 6. Barbara Little for burning the place down....again. 7. SueMac for nailing a pukkah Silky Veils of Ardour. 8. Monika for a totally fresh take. 9. Smurf, the dress and the sparkles. 10. Jenny and Kay specifically for Pink Moon. 11. Bob M for being no slouch on Slouching. 12. Chris M for sonorous bottom bits on newly acquired plank. ...hmmm, i just leaned my head back on the sofa to consider other stuff to add to this list and i nodded off. i think, at this point, i'll gracefully retire. thanks again to all who created and attended this 'fest. here's to the next and the next and the next. lesmond of the gyre. london. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 13:38:19 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Joni's later albums Well, it's a tight call between NRH & TI. NRH has more of a fuller sound whereas TI has more of a stark sound, in some cases anyway. However, the starkness serves the song so it's not really an issue. Both have some POWERHOUSE songs, some good ones, and a clunker or two. TI has "How Do You Stop" which is not Joni's song anyway - and an odd choice for a cover as the banality of the lyric (How do you stop the ripening corn...? puh-leeze) really is visible when displayed beside Joni's own. I used to think "Last Chance Lost" was just OK until I heard Bettye Lavette breathe lifeforce into it. NRH has "Nothing Can Be Done" & "The Windfall" both of which are subpar by Joni standards. The former would be the last writing collaboration she would undertake with her former husband Larry Klein, none of which are very strong compared to her other work. TI won a Grammy, but you can never know if the Grammy folks were just awarding previously ignored work. After those two, TTT from '98 and coming in at the bottom (always) would be 1988's Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm which is nearly ALL clunkers. I'm not really including the orchestra albums or any of the dozen or so compilations she did this century. Hmm, but I will not let my rusty english stop me from de-lurking some more...:-) Cyndi Lauper is just great! Now I'm listening to "True colors" Also a lot of energy here I think that's what sounds most exciting, the performances by all the Joni fans. And I really want to go. I gues I just have to be reformed - and maybe that's not sucha an impossibility after all. Are any of you familiar with Susanne Sundfxr? http://www.susannesundfor.com/ A very gifted and Joni inspired young Norwegian singer songwriter. Some of her songs are just great ! And the're available on myspace - I especially recomend "These walls" and "Resign" But now Cyndi sings "True colors" It almost makes me cry. Me Cyndi Lauper break through was really through listening to Cassandra Wilson's "Time after time" It just really talked to me. To my heart. My soul. In a way Cyndi's radio version never had. But now , going back to the orginal , I really treasure it ! Cyndi is lovely. Her true colors, are true ! I even love the sound of the eighties --- And this saturday - the very saturday of the Joni fest I played "Girls just wanna have fun" 5 times in a row. I guess this really makes me seem like a mad person - but the song has so much enrgy - and I was cleaning my house - so it fel really appropriate. So - well two posts in a row - after a long break. I'm sure I will quiet down again, I guess I enjoy both lurking and de-lurking - and hope ther is room for both Best! She played some piano and mostly electric guitar, but she broke out the dulcimer for ACOY on that tour. Guitar, by far. Very little piano - Two Grey Rooms is the only one that comes to mind. I am excited that she seems to be returning to it for her new album. First of all, tremendous thanks and gratitude to all who made donations to the websites through the raffle and the "entry fee" to the fest. All you gracious people raised enough money to pay for the web costs for 6 months! I am very grateful for all your kindness and support. Each time I travel to JoniFest, I have this thought in the back of my mind that this one can't be as meaningful as the last. And so far, each time I'm wrong. It was great to see all the new people as well as reconnecting with the regulars. Jenny and Chris - the two most in-demand "session" players at the fest. Jenny's voice is that of an angel and Jaco's. I mean. Chris' bass playing is unbeatable. Patrick - it was great to see you finally lose your "Jonifest stage virginity" and do a set. Don't look back. Kay - not only a great musician in her own right, but a heckuva sound person as well. Your Nick Drake cover with Jenny was sublime. Monica and Nickey - Two brave and talented young ladies who weren't afraid to jump in and treat us to their talents and great stage presence. Barbara - your Loudon set was a blast! I'm honored to have been a part. Anybody got a tape of Amazing Grace? And do something about that dog though, yeah? Laura - your set was great, loved the JoniFest-first Red Hot Chili Peppers cover. And also your comment on the way out the door on Sunday. :-) Smurf - you look great in a dress, I meant to call you later but got busy. Maybe next time. aPod - My Colorado sister! Teach me some of those songs, will ya? Looking forward to next year's "Victor/Victoria Battle of The Guitarists" cage match. ChuckE and Ashara - The patriarch and matriarch of the fest. No, no Ashara. YOU started it all, not me. Bob Muller and Craig - great to hang with you guys, but it's never long enough. Even the bartenders were amazing. Siobhan, a brilliant composer and microtonal viola player, and ??leigh who sat silently listening to the song circle for hours then shyly picked up a guitar and blew us away with her Bonnie Raitt-esque voice. Must be something in the air around the Full Moon. Yeah, I'm forgetting a bunch of people, I know. Come back next year and refresh my memory, will ya? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 10:36:34 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni and Marc David Chapman and Shadows and Light From: > In the book, I can't believe it has a quote from an interview with > Marc > David Chapman in it.
