I got the Words To Music: Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame DVD in the mail today. Thank you very much Brian. It's unedited and contains the McGill University presentation of the Doctor of Music award to Joni as well. Oddly, Chaka Khan was not even mentioned and, as stated before, all French content was removed. The interesting thing for me is that the commercials were left in. A unique opportunity to watch Canadian TV. It seems TV commercials are similar everywhere. Mostly pretty annoying. "Little Mosque On The Prairie"? How tacky! Is this meant to be a comedy? The show was fantastic though. Herbie Hancock almost brings Joni to tears when talking about her work with Charles Mingus. I have now copied the disc for myself and can send it on to anyone else in Australia or nearby countries. If you live in this region but don't have the capacity to copy DVDs, let me know and I will run you off a copy. Otherwise, let me know ON LIST if you'd like the original to copy and send on. Write to me on list so those who get the digest have an equal chance. I've read someone mention on this list a dream they had with Joni Mitchell in it. That being said, have any of the rest of you had a dream with Joni on it? I just find dreams so fascinating really. I tend to have dreams with EVERYONE I know in them at some time or another and many, many famous people, especially musicians (including Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc etc...dreams are fun!). I have had two Joni related dreams. The first was that I was looking at musician ads and someone was starting a Joni Mitchell tribute band! How cool would that be? The second dream I had, she was actually in. I dreamt that I was hanging out with Joni and Stephen Stills for some reason and I was begging them to come to an open mic night I used to play at. I told them there was some real good music there--they'd meet some good people, and then they could blow them all away. They were both hesitant at first but then agreed to come. That's when the dream ended! So what about you? I've had a couple Joni dreams. The first one was a couple years ago and I don't remember it that much although I do remember Joni was about forty-ish, still had long hair and was wearing a long flowing dress of mist green and also a crown of daisies. That's sort of embarrassing on my part. The second dream I just had a couple nights ago and I dreamed that Joni was running some sort of school and also had a TV show. IT really made no sense, it was kind of a nature show where she locked people in a closet with wild Canadian animals. Then all the class assignments were about Canada too and I was really behind. I'm sure that just came about for a couple reasons - 1) I AM really behind in my writing class and 2) I had just been talking extensively about Joni and other Canadian artists to this Canadian kid in my class. I went to a peace rally on Sunday. Although it's nice to see so many people who believe in peace, I always leave feeling rather depressed, knowing that ultimately our rallies do no good. Especially disturbing is the fact that by the end (at least here in Portland) most of the people who are really trying to affect change our gone and the only people left are a hodgepodge of anarchists, socialists and everything else, including scientologists, who start dancing to marimba music and starting shit with the police. Then, of course, this is what gets reported on. I have nothing against these groups of people, just the people who provoke the police and attract bad press to an otherwise peaceful event. - - Kira (in Portland) NW: The X-Files ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. I find anything interesting that I learn something new in. Anyhow, Joni said: "I'm not considered a poet," she says. "Dylan is, Jim Morrison is.............." My apologies to Doors fans as I don't hate the band (don't like them either but still hate is such a strong word) but I hate Jim Morrison. American poet my ass. Anyone could get that drugged up and start talking about the birds in the sky and ramble on and on. I have always thought and will always think that he gets too much credit. I saw that Doors movie a while back and was left feeling sorry for the band because they had to deal with him all the time...well for a limited time. But on the other hand, he was what made the Doors. I just don't get it with him. So I say again, in case you missed it, American poet my ass. Now, Dylan, I like. And Joni said: (about Chuck) "He married what he was pretty certain was a dumb blonde....." Wow, Chuck sure sounds like a winner. I don't know too much about Chuck Mitchell other than the basics and what was said in WOHAM. Jesus Joni, you could do better than a man like that. On one hand I wonder why Joni always went for the musicians. You know I'll read the crap that happened and always think "Joni find a guy outside of the music world." Musicians are so messed up (no offense!). They have issues x10 and of course there's always that whole cheating thing.....which is not cool. But then again I understand why Joni went for the musicians. That's who she knew, it was and still is part of her world, and well, some of them were and still are quite fascinating. - -M NP: Pride And Joy- Stevie Ray Vaughan ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. So, I spent the last hour or two of this afternoon all smug thinking that I could use my swanky digital radio (the UK's XM/Sirius equivalent) to record this program to an SD card. It was one of the major selling points of the thing: you can record stuff to an SD card stuffed up its hind end. That said, I dropped close on $300 on the thing and I've never actually used its recording facility. You can see where this is going, right? So I grab a selection of blank SD cards and do the technological suppository thing. "SD card not readable" says it. With all the cards I tried... This is five minutes before the program was due to start. Oh and the radio's long out of warranty. Been faulty all along, clearly. So, I then traipse the radio through to my office. It's got an optical digital output, so I can hook that straight into one of my two multitrack firewire recording interfaces and haul it into Garageband or Logic on the mac. Seems not to be quite a standard optical digital out though. Further futzing was required to get everything to sync up, by which time we're over 5 minutes in, and I'm ///fuming///. So, finally, it's recording, and I'm just waiting for the next gremlin to come along and piss me right off. Regrettably, I fear the sound quality isn't going to be great - it sounds slightly fuzzy around the edges to my cold-raddled ears. I'll settle for it being the source material at fault.... Hey Gang, Well - I can't say talking with Amanda Ghost has provided us with any great revelations.maybe a couple of interesting little tidbits at best. But personally, I couldn't be LESS interested in how Joni's career got started, how she came to have her songs covered so early on, etc.to us, that's really old news. For those that didn't catch the stream, musically speaking you missed next to nothing.a live version of Chelsea Morning and snippet of live Cactus Tree from BBC Archives, and literally seconds of two new songs, "Shine" and "Bad Dreams are Good" neither of which came across as finished (and both of which had a distinctly pro-tools feel to them from the way it sounded here). I really hope there's more to it in the end - wasn't she planning on getting Brian Blade and the boys back together for these sessions???? **SIGH** Maybe we'll get a whole song next week. It was during the 1992 Republican convention and Limbaugh was broadcasting from there. ..Houston..as I remember. My frame of mind was hysteria over the canonization of Clinton....and sick of the press bias in favor of him. So I had heard about Limbaugh....mostly negative...he was a homophobe...he was a misogynist...and worse. (later on..after several days of listening...I found NONE of labels to be true) He thought like I did...same philosophies... I sort of saw things in life the way he did..one could say. He was humoorous...never found him to be mean-spirited. He was saying ..although..much more concisely and cogent than me...what I thought about the state of the world..politics..etc. Interestingly..I was living with a woman at the time..a lesbian..who was even more conservative than I. I don't like her because her politics' are too left of center for me and she hides the real Hillary. I would venture to say most conservative men are not afraid of strong women. IF they are sure of who they are...it's not an issue...really don't think the sex matters. Not on the radar!! >Because she tried >to redo health care? For those who were hoping to hear the new album in its entirety, you might be disappointed. There is just a taste. In part one there are just snippets from two tracks; "Shine" and "Bad Dreams Are Good". Joni does, however, talk a little bit about her thought processes behind the album and songs on it. Amanda Ghost is a good interviewer and chats to Joni like they are neighbours having a cup of coffee together. Yet, she manages to keep Joni from ranting too much. Without giving away too much, there are some interesting revelations in this interview. The album, Both Sides, Now was not a contractual obligation as discussed here previously. In fact, according to Joni, it was just the opposite. Joni always wanted to record an album of covers but was contractually prevented. Travelogue on the other hand was to fulfil her contract but she says she enjoyed the experience anyway. She also talks about the reason for David Crosby producing her first album and what Chuck Mitchell thought of the song, Both Sides, Now. Her grandson, Marlin was the inspiration for the song, "Bad Dreams Are Good" (the title is a direct quote). Shine "Oh, let your little light shine. Let your little light shine. Shine on Vegas and Wall Street. Place your bets. Shine on all the fishermen with nothing in their nets..." Oh yeah, Joni now plays saxophone. A true renaissance woman. The album, "Shine" will be released around June. I will be out of bed at 7.30am (AEDT) next Wednesday to record part two. I just took that to mean that she was not allowed to do an album of covers and have it count toward 'albums owed' in her contract-and reading between the lines- guess that when she presented them with the notion that she had no new songs, they relented. But I could be totally wrong. RR ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2007 19:38:24 -0500 From: Deb Messling Subject: joni plays the saxophone?? I wonder what this means. The piano music sounded > good though. > GARRET Well, the clips were extremely short, just a few seconds, so kind of hard to form an opinion. I think Shine sounded ....fine...kind of like where TI left off-again hard to say. Kind of eerie for me since several songs I've written of late have "shine" as a part of the title or chorus: Let It Shine, Our Love Still Shines, two that say 'shine a little light' (Joni's line is 'let your little light shine'). I was even thinking of calling my next CD Let It Shine, but had decided against it, but enough about ME! (weird, though). It was cool to hear about the early years of songwriting, and while she wouldn't admit it as such, images of her pitching her songs to Tom Rush and the guys. And the way she described working with Crosby and the record biz attitude of the time. Amanda Ghost asked the right questions, alot of them about songwriting, even getting repremanded for saying it was hard to put existing poetry to song, when, in fact, "they write themselves" my dear girl. How many black people impressions did she do, like 3 so far? I must take issue with her dismissal of the protest songs of her generation as "ineffective" and "adolescent". These songs moved a generation, helped spread awareness and stop a war. I doubt if she has even heard "An Untitled Protest" by Country Joe. There's "Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix,"Masters of War" by Dylan, "War" by Edwin Starr. These songs were artful in themselves, hardly adolescent, and certainly effective. Okay, maybe none of them caused Nixon to sit down and sob...or maybe they did-he sicked the FBI on Lennon....(end of rant). Altogether, a nice ride on the interview side, was hoping for a full song, though, instead of a few seconds.
