A mixed bag as usual. Some gems and some stinkers. How appropriate for Bette Midler is Twisted? The speedy wordiness of it is perfect for her burlesque style. Chaka Khan's version of Man From Mars is a gem too. Very bluesy. My two favourites would have to be Chinese Cafi by David Hay and This Flight Tonight by E-Clypse - the best cover of that song by far and the first version that isn't a 70s glam rock version. Thanks also to Laura for sharing this preview of the upcoming tribute album. Interesting interpretation of the song. Quite unique. I heard it first on S&L and lvoed it. It was one of the first things that i LOVED on DJRD. FTR by Cassandra could be great. I really like Annie's LOTC and Sarah's Blue. I agree that it's very heavy on the Sgt. Pepper influence, but I love it. They came out in the late 80's, early 90's and then broke up, but Jason Falkner, Jon Brion, they were all part of the band at some point. Super fun. Also, I really was serious about there being a Jonifest twice a year. Yes, I know they were trying to make a point and there is much to be said about the pressures many women feel to look like every actress, beauty queen, Vogue and Playboy cover. In my experience, however, it was an extreme way to make the point. What I meant by it not being about "choice" is that all the feminists I knew wouldn't let you in the "club" unless you conformed. In other words, someone else wanting you join would not feel much of a choice unless they also stopped not only any kind of adornment and related rituals. Suppose some group of women started a movement where all women were pressured to starve themselves to be thin, get boob and nose jobs and other plastic surgery, must all have blond hair, etc. And you couldn't be accepted unless you conformed. It would be just as extreme. Yes, some women unfortunately do feel that pressure and it is very sad and unhealthy. Go to a Hollywood or Beverly Hills party event sometime and you will think you've landed on another planet. But basic motivation to look good and enhance your appearance a little is no sin. Female (and male) vanity has been around a long, long time. My recommendations for a Kurt CD can't be limited to one! I would recommend these: Live in Chicago at the Green Mill (some of his most gorgeous songs, a special appearance by Jon Hendricks (Hendricks & Ross), and take offs on Wayne Shorter, Russell Ferrante, Keith Jarrett and Nat King Cole) Flirting with Twilight (Bob Sheppard, Jeff Clayton and Peter Erskine back him up on this one, bits of Stephen Sondheim, Charlie Haden, John Coltrane) Man in the Air (as on other albums, he brings lyrics to the music of, among others, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny) I think you will just have to acquire the entire collection, Sherelle. ;-) Hope we see you back here again soon! Sorry to have written badly. If that was your individual choice that's GREAT! I recall many men back in the day who also rejected conventional appearances and was very attracted to and dated a few of them. "Like so many other women I drifted back into conventionality but I miss the old me, really. I wear makeup, badly, but I hate it, hate it, and I hate messing with my hair and thinking about clothes." Many women don't need to do anything - they have natural beauty. My oldest and best friend has worn make-up maybe 5 times in the 40 years we have known each other. The prom, her wedding and a few high school reunions. She does nothing with her hair and wears hand me down clothes I gave her 25 years ago.. When she does put on make-up and fix her hair, she looks like Candice Bergen but even without any fixing up she always had the guys chasing after her! Crazy! That is not choice - that > is dogma and catma. Non-productive to real issues. I would draw the line at not washing and brushing the tangles out of one's hair (unless you're going for the "Bob Marley" look), but as for curling it, shaving, and putting on make-up ... those are three of the most non-productive things I can think of for women to spend time doing. Particularly wearing make-up. It's friggin' clown paint, it's unnecessary, and it mainly promotes the idea that women aren't beautiful enough as they are. I know you were referring to "real issues," but really, don't you think all of the time spent oohing and aahing at ourselves in the mirror, and trying to "fit in" to the fashion of the moment, is rather a huge waste of time?
