Apart from all the other great reasons that i am kicking myself for having to drop out of Jonifest, there is the book swap. I was looking forward to that. At the moment i'm reading Moral Disorder by Margaret Atwood. Before that i read Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel and then The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susana Clarke. I have not been reading a whole lot for pleasure since last summer. Most of my reading is psychology at the moment - and not strictly teh interesting parts of! (Hey Monika, I really sort of thought that Jung is recognised as an innovator and theorist and highly respected and his influence is felt in everything from academic departments to practice to western culture; i don't know a whole lot about him beyond the basics to be honest but i do recall a very informative and livefly discussion of Jung on this list some years back, if i'm not mistaken Kakki was fairly vocal (??)). At the moment i'm reading Freud when taking public transport (Introductory Lectures and also Civilisation and its Discontents - funnily enough this provides an interesting link to the following Patti Smith lyrics: the transformation of waste is perhaps the oldest pre-occupation of man. man being the chosen alloy He must be reconnectedvia shit, at all cost. inherent within us is the dream of the task of the alchemist to create from the clay of man And to re-create from excretion of man pure and then soft and then solid gold." ) Anyway....... IN terms of longstanding favourites, i would mention Lord of the Rings; Room with a View and Howard's End by Forster; Beloved and Paradise by Toni Morrison; Brideshead Revisited by Waugh; A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess; 1984 by Orwell; Persuasion by Austen; Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. and you know there may be more. There are more. Books i've really enjoyed in recent years include: Timetraveller's wife; Notes on a scandal; On Beauty; Ninth life of louis drax; the dark materials books; the harry potter books. I have been so impressed with the remastering you've achieved so far on Joni's albums, I was wondering if anything could save some of these poor quality bootlegs. Dave, you have achieved more than I could have imagined. The Club 47 performance was one of the worst quality recordings of all. I am amazed. It is so clear. It's like it was recorded this year, using digital equipment to my ears. You mislabelled Cactus Tree as Marcie so, therefore, all the tracks are there. You did a particularly amazing job with Cactus Tree. It was the worst part of the recording with tape stretching in parts. I thought that track would have been irreparable. Grabster is quite true in its claims about lossy compression and its shortcomings. Subject: Re: The Club 47 bootleg cleaned up for ya... Cleaned-up, remastered recordings are best circulated in a compressed, lossless format. Otherwise, if they circulate only in mp3, and are burned to CDs, this somewhat defeats the purpose of remastering, as mp3 is lossy and degrades the sound of the source files. The situation gets worse when someone burns a CD from the mp3s and someone else makes new mp3s from that CD, and so on... FLAC is the standard for compressed, lossless file sharing, and the preferred method of distribution for recordings like Club 47 is bit torrent.> However, there are other factors to consider. In my case I don't have access to the original master tapes so I am already processing someone else's idea of a digital master of an analog source, for the most part done in the 80's when a/d converters were garbage by a label that was rushing to fill their catalog with the new fangled CD format (in itself a lossy format). Add to that the eternal Mac/ Windows divide (as a Mac user I have never once used FLAC but didn't subject anyone to Apple Lossless either for the same reason.) In my opinion, and that of many pro musicians, the AAC/mp4 file format encoded at 256 kpbs is the best sounding lossy format to date which is what I usually provide for folks on this list. But I received numerous emails from people who didn't use iTunes and couldn't open the files. So the next option is 320 kpbs Variable Bit Rate mp3s which sound pretty decent. Many people still don't have broadband (I live in the country and it only became available last summer) so lossless files of any stripe would be too big for them. The Club 47 bootleg was truly horrible sounding at source and not even the best golden ears could hear the difference between formats. STAS was also a horrible piece of audio to start with. TRIAGE. I do what I can to make the listen a better experience. Perfect is not available to me. The circulating CD concept is all well and good but it would take two years for the same number of people to enjoy the music as can be done overnight with the lossy format, and judging by the responses I've had from the last six Joni albums I've worked on, people are very happy with them. If you absolutely can't bear the thought anything less than AIFF CD format, Paypal me $5 and send me your mailing address off list and I'll burn you CDs, as I have done for several people. Those in the east who really immerse themselves in their religion don't just say they believe, but they live it...or try to anyhow. I think that's a big difference between Eastern and Western religions. It is more a life choice than say going to Church once a week or on holidays. Now I mean no offense to anyone who does so, it's just there are some people I know who will go to Church on Sunday, think that's that, and fuck up everything else but think they're ok because they go to Church. But in the East, it's everything, I think. I don't live there but from what I read, so it seems. Don't quote me on all this! I'm just stating things that seem to be. But you're right, Christianity can be philosophical too. It just seems it's more viewed as a religion as opposed to a Philosophy. I mean not too many people live their life by the bible or something like that. But either way, no matter what religion you are or what you believe, in the end they all say the same thing. It's just different Gods, rules, perceptions....but the values are the same--love, peace, and happiness really. It'd just be nice if all people realized this and didn't think their religion was better than anyone else's.
