I haven't seen her since the first Jonifest in Pittsburgh 9 years ago. It was just fantastic to visit with her again. She is such an inspiration and good lady. I figured she might like to go see some jazz and magically my fave Kurt Eilling was in town with band playing at Catalina Bar & Grill. We scored a table right next to the left stage. Kurt was blowing us away and then announced a special guest - none other than the legendary Bob Sheppard on alto sax! Bob toured with Joni throughout the 2000 Both Sides Now concert. Sherelle just loved getting "close to Joni" in a sense and they were smiling back and forth a bit with each other. Bob and Joni's 2000 tour drummer Peter Erskine have both recorded on Kurt's albums. He really attracts the cream of the "cats." Jeff Clayton of the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (the "house" jazz orchestra of the Hollywood Bowl) was also sitting behind us. It was some stunning music. Afterward I just had to take her by the Hotel Bel Air bar where we sat by the fire reminiscing and I walked her through the Van and Joni 1998 tour parties there ;-) We both kept saying how lucky and appreciative we have been to have made so many incredible friends over the years through this list. She took off on the coast train to visit Kate B. in Santa Barbara wine country this morning. I'm sure she is going to have many great tales to tell when she gets back home. Sherelle, thank you again for taking the time to meet up and please come back again! Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2007 11:42:56 +0100 From: "Marion Leffler" Subject: Word article Reading the article (thanks Les and Les) I got a distinct feeling of deja vue. Maybe that's because I have read a lot of intervies in the jmdl-library lately. Sure, Joni keeps whining about some things but then again, the journalists keep asking her the same questions over and over! I am inclined to admire her patience with this and bothering to answer at all...As for her world views, on the whole I agree with her although some of it is narrowed by her perspective, by the way she lives. She doesn't live an ordinary life, after all. For example, her struggle with the taxman turned her into a political person - that's what she says in the interview. I find that a bit self-centered. I can imagine lots of other reasons for people to become political than a struggle over the size of their income taxes - social injustices in general, for example. But then again, Joni's world is different from mine, and she is doing the best she can from her point of view. I admire her confidence and do not think she is arrogant. There is one thing that puzzles me about her, though, and that is her constant rejection of feminism. In some interviews, she has said that feminists are "too aggressive". In the Word article, she repeats for the umptiest time that her music is raceless and genderless. And that it isn't "feminine". I think it is!! She certainly speaks with a woman's voice in all her lyrics, and how could she not? Anybody else baffled by this? It sounds a little like an episode of the Australian show "Kath and Kim" (one of my personal favourites). Kim is demanding a drink, and asking for a "Cardonnay". When corrected, she says "No, it's CARdonnay - the haytch is silent." (note she says haytch, not aitch). When corrected again, her reply is "Fine, Chardonnay, you pack of chunts...." I agree Marion, I thought that was an odd thing to say. People should be proud of what they are and something as deep and personal as music should reflect that, not hide it. When I listen to Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, I'm totally aware that they are black men and it is something that is intertwined with their music, inseparable. Maybe the blind piano player meant that her music transcends all barriers but he just had a funny way of saying it. She goes on to say later that straight white males have trouble dealing with her music and emotionality...being a straight white male I have to take exception to that. I am not afraid of emotionality and I love sneaky chords. Even if she meant that as a generalization, I'm not even sure that is true. Sure, maybe she's confronting a stereotype that certainly exists but it seems a little dated in my opinion, like she's stuck in the past. We're not in the '50's JOni. There are plenty of straight, white male songwriters who are highly emotional and use unusual chords that will catch you off guard. Jeff Buckley comes to mind. And I also have to take exception to her statement that classical music today is elevator music. I've heard and also met some contemporary classical composers (Golijav, and Gandolfi who ironically is actually a big fan of hers and wanted to bring her to Tanglewood) and her statement is way off base. They're certainly not in the spotlight (when have they ever been?) but there are amazing composers writing music that is both stimulating and invigorating. I certainly don't like all of it and there are pieces/composers out there that would fit her description but as a general statement it is clearly uninformed. Maybe she needs to search a little harder just people wade through popular music to find her. Also, maybe she is a fan of Debussy but he is hardly the only classical composer who was different from all the others. Stravinsky comes to mind (going to see Rite of Spring in April), Chopin, Mahler, Bach who was pretty much written off and forgotten till Felix Mendelsshon discovered him and resurrected his music from the dead. I agree with Kakki, that in some instances she does come across as a bit arrogant. That's like an OLD person's channel!" ***** Tres bien, Kate! That would have been a great come-back, were I quicker on my toes. Ha. Next time he comes home I'll have to put his old Bert and Ernie slippers in some PBS mugs. That'll show him! This kid (the years spin by and now the boy is 28) is too quick for me sometimes. I bore him, and it was a happy challenge to raise him. He's the one who called me at work once (he never calls me at work, so I was quite surprised) from Chicago when he had just arrived to look for a place to live. He said: "Mom, I just got into the rental car and turned on the radio and it's a Joni song!" (He professes to have no interest in her.) I was so thrilled, and told him it was a sign that he was moving to the right place. Then he quipped: "No, it's a sign that if I move to Chicago, I should never listen to *this* radio station!" Argh! He has always been a tease, with the most mischievous grin. Ya gotta love him. And I do. Pardon me for talking about my son too much, but I just have to share this since we're talking about TV shows. He was on Letterman once! No, not a scheduled guest, but he was on. 2001. He was waiting in line to get in, and they pulled him out to be one of the V.I.P. guests in the front rows. I guess these people get to banter with Letterman before the show starts taping. So before the show, he asked this: "Dave, I have a question for you. I'm graduating from college soon, and I'm not sure what to do with my life. I'd like to get a job where I don't have to do anything, but get paid lots of money." Dave laughed and shot back: "You wise ass little s#$t!" Then when the show started, Dave said something like: "Here's a kid who's graduating from college and doesn't know what to do." The cameras showed Chris laughing it all away, and then Dave said (in a doofy voice): "Look Mom and Dad, I'm going to graduate school!", and Chris just sat there smiling. Oh well, maybe you had to be there, but everyone laughed, and this mama was thrilled. And back to Sesame Street, wow. Memories! I just googled it quickly and came up with this: http://www.buy.com/prod/songs_from_the_street_35_years_of_music/q/loc/109/61703080.html Sesame Street taught the children well, and so many good musicians appeared on it. I had forgotten! James Taylor, Pete Seeger, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Pointer Sisters, Ziggy Marley -- even Cab Calloway (Hi-De-Ho!) and you know..... Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? We can't return, we can only look, behind from where we came..... Love & peace, Patti P., with a tear in her eye because they grow so fast, like the turn of a page NPIMH: Kermit singing the Rainbow Connection Why are there so many Songs about rainbows And whats on the other side Rainbows are visions Theyre only illusions And rainbows have nothing to hide So weve been told and some chose to Believe it But I know theyre wrong wait and see Someday well find it The rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me Who said that every wish Would be heard and answered When wished on the morning star Somebody thought of that And someone believed it And look what its done so far Whats so amazing That keeps us star gazing What so we think we might see Someday well find it That rainbow connection The lovers the dreamers and me All of us under its spell We know that its probably magic Have you been half asleep And have you heard voices Ive heard them calling my name Are these the sweet sounds that called The young sailors I think theyre one and the same Ive heard it too many times to ignore it Theres something that Im supposed to be Someday well find it The rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me P.S. Ouch! I can't defend Clown (though I enjoy it) and none of these songs rank up there with her best (Dream and Number aren't even songs really, they're more like sketches), but, honestly, aren't they fun to listen to? Do we have to take all of Joni's work so seriously? Doesn't anyone else find Windfall danceable?
