Bob By the same token we all know that she didn't play songs that would gain her wide acceptance and recognition, as always since DED. So I can't help thinking that her picks of Number One and the 3 Great Stimulants are very sarcastic/tongue in cheek towards the public and the millions of listeners. Definitely chutzpah to throw such powerful lyrics at a crowd of strangers! Forget Hejira, she only played it because it was in the same tuning. So it's not so much that she has become tolerant IMO. In a way she throws shit at the public (I mean aggressive lyrics) so how can she expect anything else but getting shit thrown back at her? Don't get me wrong, that's why I love her. They'll be the cheap tickets (can't justify spending $225, $50 seems a lot more reasonable) but it should still be a fantastic show! One of my fondest concert memories is seeing Sting on his first solo tour, Dream of the Blue Turtles, at the Sundome (USF) in Tampa. Won tickets for it on my birthday as a matter of fact, from 95 YNF, the home of rock 'n roll, now defunct I believe. It would be cool if they incorporate some Sting songs into their concert repertoire. I'd be interested to see what they do with them. The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is put on CNN to see if Bush has bombed anwhere else or blown up the whole world yet. I'm not kidding. These guys are freaking me out big time these days. Then, for regular viewing, not much, really......I sometimes surf around as I read or do other things, but I guess there are a few things I catch. NOWADAYS: 1. PBS specials (mostly concerts and music specials, Frontline, Charlie Rose, etc.) It seems that lately when my son Chris calls and asks what I'm doing, often the answer is "watching a PBS show". Chris teases: "MOM ! That's like an OLD person's channel! And what, are you going to have PBS mugs all over the house the next time I visit?" (Ha....I should buy him a set of PBS mugs for his upcoming wedding. That'll show him!!!) And sometimes, surfing around, Joni will pop up on there (WOHAM) and the whole world stops so you can watch it and, like my colleague said yesterday, you "fall in love all over again." That happened last year when my Huskies lost in the NCAA tournament. I was tearful at the falling of our stars, and was channel surfing, and along came Joni! Magic relief. 2. C-SPAN sometimes, but then I have to turn it off because nothing good is really coming to pass as we had hoped. 3. Weather Channel (I remember reading that Elizabeth Edwards, in her deep depression over the death of her son Wade, just sat and stared and stared at the Weather Channel all day...her way to cope.) 4. I usually channel surf the 6:30 p.m. news between the 3 major networks, clucking and moaning at how they are missing the REAL news and show so much insignificant crap. 5. Jon Stewart 6. SNL when I can make it 7. For sports: UConn Huskies (men and women, I'm bi), esp. during March Madness; The "World Serious" -- that's what my son called it when he was little -- if the Red Sox are in it. 8. One reality show (just one!) that is only on in the summer that I am too embarrassed to tell you! My friends and kin are sooo disgusted with me for watching this...they can't believe that an intelligent person would watch this, and I counter that I watch it from a lofty psychological and sociological perspective. Okay, okay. It's ....no never mind. I'll have to check out Ugly Betty since so many of you like it, more Simpsons (Hi Victor -- when are the *new* ones on?...I never know), the L-Word (when is that one on?) and I don't get HBO so I can't watch Weeds or those other shows. I really can't tolerate any kind of violence so I can't handle all those crime shows and stuff. I don't like to think about murder and people getting hurt. IN THE PAST TWO OR SO DECADES: 1. Twin Peaks (What a cool show!) 2. Dallas, and Knots Landing (Embarrassing but true. I would schedule my life around Dallas!) 3. Wonder Years (Loved the older hippie sister who looked like Joni!) 4. Roseanne sometimes (Remember the bathroom scene when they were stoned? Tooo funnnneee!) 5. Frazier 6. Cheers 7. Seinfeld IN THE REAL OLD DAYS (birth of rock 'n roll days): 1. Bewitched (I remember feeling a surge of joy when the music came on and the cartoon Samantha on her broom swooped over the words and starry sky) (ooh...I just got goosebumps again!) 2. The Patty Duke Show. Yeah!!!! (NPIMH: Where Cathy adores a minuet, The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette, Our Patty loves to rock and roll, A hot dog makes her lose control -- What a wild duet!) 3. Gidget (love that Sally Field and yes, I sometimes catch the new Brothers and Sisters) 4. Dr. Kildare 5. The Monkees!!!!! Hey, hey! 6. Ed Sullivan with the whole family and Sunday night sandwiches and one big cookie each from the bakery downtown (TIC! Downtown, by the pinball arcade....) My brothers watched Combat and some other show I can't remember the name of. I couldn't tolerate war and violence even way back then. And Hell, I'm with you on Emeril. I just find him so obnoxious. Who does he think he is? Kitty Welles? Love and peace, Patti P., who will think of lots more shows later. Northern Exposure - When this was on, I wanted so badly to move to Alaska, even though it was filmed in Washington State. I LOVED this show, and was so furious when a mistake was made in the history of a character, that I called their offices to complain, not that it did any good, LOL. . Laverne & Shirley - I LOVED this show - I can't explain it. Maybe it was humor and a message too. I even named my two late cats after them. Mama's Family - Vicki Lawrence is a gem on this show - the first season was just released on DVD. Are You Being Served - Great show, I love British humor; Bless Me Father was a good one too. And point of interest, The Flying Nun had a character who was a latino nun and a comrade of Sister Bertrille (Sally Field) who had trouble getting her slang right. Her name was Sister Sixto and she was played by none other Shelley Morrison who has had a successful run as Rosario on Will and Grace. So there are some of mine. 'stimulants' and 'number one' were aggressively political songs on a very aggressively political event; i don't think there was anything particularly chutzpahish (ok, i know it's not an adjectivizable word [and adjectivizable isn't even a word]) in playing those songs, though stimulants, just being so soft, was maybe not a showmanly choice. 'stimulants' baffled me, though it was beautiful (i didn't hear the album 'dog eat dog' until many years later). but i loved number one from the first time i heard it. she brought in a back up singer (from peter gabriel's band?) and they gave a great, energized performance. chalkmark was released not much later and i adored, and still adore that album. and i think the performance of 'hejira' is completely magnificent. at the end, when she normally sings 'until love sucks me back that way' she repeated the end first verse 'petty wars that shell shock love away' and she really spat out the line. i think that's the only thing she did to exorcise any bad feelings she had. if i remember, she gave a perfectly calm interview backstage after. i provided the source for the first jmdl video tree. i haven't watched the concert in years, but i remember two other things: that peter gabriel did 'san jacinto', which was just hauntingly beautiful, and that jackson browne and darryl hannah were interviewed and i have never seen two such baked people on tv, before or since. i get a contact buzz just thinking about it... patrick np - britten, serenade for tenor, horn and strings, robert tear, tenor - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Laurent Olszer Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 3:49 PM To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Joni question I applaud Joni's chutzpah and fortitude to go on when she was clearly being ignored and abused. . Others: Desperate Housewives (yeah, guilty pleasure) Grey's Anatomy (last episode was very dumb, don't know why I watch anymore) Seinfeld Jeopardy (life is for learning...a bunch of useless crap) Boston Legal (James Spader totally cracks me up) SNL Discovery Health Channel PBS shows, such as: NOVA Frontline Antique Freakshow (I attended one; I may be on TV with my worthless junk) Nightly Business Report Jim Lehrer Austin City Limits ....heck, I'll even watch some of the kid's stuff on PBS if it looks interesting. One time I watched a guy teach how to draw cartoons - that was interesting! I don't really like reality shows - hate Idol - but I do watch the Nanny 911 and Trading Spouses shows only because I like to watch the kids. And even though I subscribe to basic cable, I will watch The Colbert Report thru the fuzz on my screen because he is SO DARN FUNNY! I also have a Guild D-45, a Yamaha 12-string, a Dobro I bought in 1974, a Mexican-made Stratocaster (pretty much a piece of crap), a 1971 (?) Fender Musicmaster I bought used by trading in the banjo I never got the hang of despite Pete Seeger's instruction book--my first electric guitar, a Gretsch lap steel I bought fairly recently at Annies Guitar & Drums in Savannah, a red Les Paul I got from Musicians' Friend a couple of years ago and my very favorite, a newish National Tricone--blue, that my late wife, Patti, bought me for my birthday in 1999 (she really loved me!) for 2000 bucks. I have a smallish tube amp (I don't play electric in public very often, and a crappy Peavey transistor jobby. Also assorted harmonicas, an autoharp, and the piano my parents bought when I was four years old, not tuned for a year and it needs a tuning I've been noticing for 6 months. And in the household, but not mine, a cheaper Martin (DM-??)I bought for my partner Becky. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Victor Johnson Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 10:31 PM To: Motitan@aol.com Cc: Joni LIST Subject: Re: And guitars of yours NJC My first guitar was a Sigma which I still have. Before she went electric, she would have several of them onstage in different tunings. Before that, she would retune! I think I have seen her playing a Gibson acoustic (maybe?) in an old picture, and her first instrument was a Martin ukelele. And there are photos of her with a Strat-but her main electric in the Shadows & Light era was the hollowbody Ibanez George Benson model, again she had 3 or 4 (?). A couple of them had come up for sale a few years back, and someone on the list got one and brought it to Jonifest-forgive me for forgetting names, I wasn't there-but people got to play & admire it. Joni claims to have been given one of the first phase shifters, and says that Jaco immediately took it from her! Or maybe it was a Roland stereo amp with phase built in, in any case, I suppose she got another, and used it to thicken up her sound. After the Ibanez came the Parker Fly and the G-8 (right?) Roland system that allows virtual tuning- that is, hit a footswitch, change the tuning without ever touching the strings. This synth/modeling system is what you hear on Taming the Tiger, was introduced to her by Graham Nash, and again members of this list own this system and it's predecessor and have Jonifested with it. Joni went to the Parker Fly electric because it's a super lightweight model, under 5 lbs, and she was having back pain from the heavier guitars. A "Joni Gear" database would be nice. Besides guitars, there is the JoEllen dulcimer, Fender Rhodes piano on Woodstock, Farfisa, Fairlight keyboards, AYKTMBM... RR From: >I was wondering if there was a list of all the guitars Joni has used and >all > the amps she has used? I recall a bit of a thread long ago where it was "established" that the goat dance was, ahem, doin the wild thing. Not any particular type of wild thing, just the thang. ;-) Maybe we were historically wrong? At any rate, I would love a trip someday to the Greek Isles to study more of the culture. And quit picking on Victor! Geesh! I can be very discriminating about people, but FGS, Victor gets a pass. He is a totally sweet soul and aint got no fleas on him. Azeem, please let us know if you haven't already. I have always had my take on why and it did not have to do with her smoking. It's somewhat trivial but I am interested in what was said. And Azeem, I know you have been here long enough to know I was always one of Joni's big defenders with regard to articles that may have portrayed her wrongly. Indeed, I used to be flamed as being a "sycophant" and worse when it came to defending her. However, I have come to think that she is becoming eccentric, to say the least. Maybe those who saw it a while back were right. That doesn't diminish my love and admiration for her, but she has been worrying me a bit lately. Just an observation and ultimately doesn't change my respect for her. I just worry a bit. Mainly because I have not had the time to get into it. And I only have basic cable and not all the good stuff. But when I do have the odd speck of time, it is: Antiques Road Show (keep looking to score) Trading Spaces (I am a frustrated Interior Designer) VH-1 (the stories (exposes) about all the colorful musicians) (Rarely) Lost - I like that it is shot in Hawaii and is good weird Dancing With The Stars (yeah, a reality show, but it is good even if you don't want to admit it) Iron Chef and most of the other cooking shows (love it!) Bits of Travel Channel and Animal Planet (I am a nerd at heart) All Cable News shows both left wing and right wing (reality freak and an opportunity to vent after a long day ;-) On the horizon: 24 - Paz got me into it on his last visit. I could get hooked. Kiefer hangs in my neighborhood, too, so maybe I should join the fan club.
