Australians tend to use the British terms for these things more. We say "jam" as well as "conserve" for fruit spreads and "jelly" is a generic term for the substance made out of gelatine. Americans tend to use brand names in place of generic terms and call, "jelly", "Jello" which is a brand of dessert jelly. Much the same way many British use the brand name, "Hoover" in place of the word, "vacuum". I hope this makes it a little clearer. Well, guess who's this month's cover star? That's right. A fairly meaty interview, focusing initially on the ballet, but also covering the forthcoming album and (sigh) Joni's tired old beefs about the music business and the critics. I've always devoured Joni features, and I have to say this one left a distinctly sour taste. It was composed almost entirely of a mixture of grievance and self-aggrandisment, and I really found it hard going for that reason. I won't say much more for now, though I'd be fascinated to know what anyone else makes of it. Martin? Chris? Stephen? Jacky? Jamie? On a more positive note, there is a detailed account of what went wrong with her voice, and how some of the problems have been remedied. Smoking, the Usual Suspect, was apparently not the main cause of the deterioration, although she concedes that it may have buggered up her sinuses, which won't have helped. Anyway, she admits what some of us thought about the last two records, that her singing really *was* underpowered, and insists that it's recovered well. Romania is not on the Balkan peninsula, but I know from linguistic studies that it is part of what is called the Balkan Linguistic Union, or the Balkan Sprachbund, which unifies several languages. Most are of diverse origins, but have developed common features, as the result of close cultural connections. Romania is at the outskirts of this union, but definitely a part of it. So although it seems likely that Joni saw goat-dancing on a Greek island and not in Romania, Victor's reference to Romanian goat-dancing is relevant in the bigger picture. Admittedly I knew nothing of the phenomenon until I read this but Id not be surprised if research revealed that the two phenomena were related, even if they take place at different times of the year. The birth of Jesus Christ and winter solstice are unrelated, but celebrated at the same day! Benedicte, in fact about to revise my ideas about the developments of the Romanian imperative... Since we moved to the apt in the summer, I've hardly touched the guitar but have been watching a lot of TV. How pathetic. Here's what I watch: - - Ugly Betty - best TV show to come along in years with an amazing cast of characters. I love this show so much I even watch repeats. - - Desperate Housewives - started watching it because my daughter does, but it makes me laugh - - Lost (sometimes). I didn't watch it before this year, so I don't really get it and am not sure if I care, but it has its moments - - Prison Break - full of mostly implausible twists and turns but very well done and certainly brings out the paranoid streak in me (Trust no one!) - - The Simpsons, but often in re-runs, because I'm never really sure when the new shows are on. In any case, watching re-runs of the Simpsons is fine. There's always something you didn't notice the first time - - Futurama - by Matt Groening as well and I don't think they're making them anymore, but it beats me to hell why they would cancel it. I suspect it has more to do with the annoying habit networks have of moving shows around, skipping them for a week, playing re-runs for a few weeks more and so on - - Men in Trees (not all the time - Anne Heche is really annoying) - - Grey's Anatomy (again, some of the characters can be extremely annoying and I don't watch this all the time and probably wouldn't care if I missed it) - - lately have been watching shows on The Learning Channel dealing with unusual people or people who have serious medical problems and need mind-boggling surgery to correct them. Shows about primordial dwarves, kids with progeria, kids who have horrible tumours on their faces that require extensive surgery. There's something really fascinating about this stuff and makes me wish I had gone into some kind of genetic research for a living - - I will also confess (I blame my daughter, because she started it) to watching reality shows such as "America's Top Model" and "Beauty and the Geek." Yeah, they're fluff and really puffed up and they could do the whole season in half the time or less, but there are some interesting sociological things going on among the contestants on these shows. - - "What not to wear". I'd love to be on this show and have them get rid of my old clothes and give me $5,000 and a trip to shop in New York. Dances, fiestas, celebrations or special days related to various farm animals (bulls, goats) are found throughout the Mediterranean area, if not elsewhere in the world. I'm no expert on this but have read a few things on it. They're ancient pagan rituals that have been given a "Christian" meaning by the early Christians who found it easier to convert people by letting them keep some of their old beliefs or rituals, but reinterpreting them with a Christian spin. Or they took the pagan beliefs and made them not the work of gods, but of devils and this is why the (Christian) devil is made to look like a goat, or like the god Pan. Christ may not have been born on Christmas Day at all and some researchers say not, but it was convenient to place Christian feast days on days that were already sacred to the native people. So, I'm sure that dances related to goats and bulls and other animals that perhaps represent archetypes of human behaviour, or help to explain the mysteries of nature, are found throughout that area. Now, what if Joni had really meant, "He did the go-go dance very well"? That would blow us all out of the water! Personally, if someone wants to make fun of Hillary or comment on her than as far as I'm concerned they can have a field day. The same goes for GW or any political figure. They are all open to ridicule. Thanks, Victor! A field day, you say? I want to have a field day for Lieberman! (NPIMH: What a field-day for the heat.....) I want to ROAR like forest fire! Out of the fire like Catholic saints comes Parlette and her deep complaint. I'm feeling contempt so I'm going to tell it. Many of you know how hard we worked for Lamont and how deeply disappointed (understatement) I was that Creeperman won. Blows my mind. Six freakin' years of this guy? Oh, that lying, smarmy, odious, selfish, whining, arrogant, war-mongering, unctuous, "Mr. Bipartisan bulls@#t", Bush kiss-up! (Message on my voice mail: "This is Joe Lieberman and I've stood up to George W. Bush time and time again. Today I ask for your trust. Today I ask for your vote.") (make sure to elongate that "timmmmmmmmmmme and timmmmmmmmmmme again to make it REALLY whiny, okay?) After he LOST the primary, when asked who could dissuade him from running as an Independent, he answered: "No earthly messenger." Uh oh. Sound like anyone else we know? (Note to self: Blood pressure rising. Deep breath.) Yesterday there was an article in my daily newspaper that I somewhat enjoyed. Here's a snippet that gave me a good laugh: "In one scathing declaration, former House Democratic staffer David Sirota wrote that he wished Lieberman's "melting, Emperor-from-Star-Wars face would stop appearing on my television set and freaking out my dog, Monty."" Ha! Good one! He freaks out my dogs, too. Indirectly, though. I start screaming at the TV and the dogs pick their heads up and look at each other as if to say: "WTF is up with HER today?" Patrick, Deb, Richard, Bobs (and you know there may be more) might want to read it: http://www.courant.com/news/politics/hc-joe0306.artmar06,0,5912122.story Good blog posts there, too. It still blows my mind that he won. And now he wants to call a "political truce" in Washington on the war in Iraq. Give the surge a chance to work. Umm, excuse me, but isn't a truce when everyone puts down their arms for a while so no one gets hurt? So we are supposed to shut up for six months while more human beings get killed and tortured and maimed and psychologically scarred for life. What unbelievable irony. Give war a chance. My sweet Lord. Sigh. I'm going to stop because I don't want to ruin my day...or anyone else's. I'd rather talk about Joni and TV shows and painted ponies and dance halls and cafes and goat or boho dances and a park a bridge a tree, a rivvvverrrr.... Plus, Nothing can be done Nothing can be done Oh nothing can be done about Lieberman. Thanks for letting me rant. I didn't get to strike *every* chord that I feel, but this helped. Now I will move on to more positive things.....like planning a peace vigil on campus March 19th, and a rally in Hartford on the 17th, and you know..... If I recall, someone from the UK (Pete Townshend, Mc Cartney?) didn't make it on time and they opted to fill the slot with Joni at the last minute. Does anybody have more details please? Also, is this where the encounter with Jackson Browne took place that led to the argument that was discussed recently on the list? I didn't quite get the jist of it, if someone can please summarize it? I keep thinking of Monty Burns from the Simpsons saying "Smithers, release the hounds!" A couple of weeks ago he asked Smithers to release the hounds when he discovered the Simpsons squatting at his mansion, but they were at a guest house and Smithers had to go pick them up in a SUV before he could release them, which he did and sent the Simpsons scurrying for their lives. The unruly crowd had been in the stadium for more than 6 hours when she went on. By then, they weren't very receptive to Joni's slow and plaintive song "The 3 Great Stimulants." At one point someone from the crowd tossed something onstage and it hit Joni's water glass causing the liquid to splash in front of her as the camera caught her blinking at the sudden trail of water. Before singing her next song, Joni chastised the crowd by saying "Save the bombs for later. I'm not that bad, you dig? Quit pitching shit up here!" They are not coming to Atlanta, but they are coming to the St. Pete Times forum in Tampa which is where I'm going to see them on July 11th! The best thing is I don't even have to deal with ticketbastard as my brother-in-law who work for the Tampa Lightning is getting us tickets through his own channels. They'll be the cheap tickets (can't justify spending $225, $50 seems a lot more reasonable) but it should still be a fantastic show! One of my fondest concert memories is seeing Sting on his first solo tour, Dream of the Blue Turtles, at the Sundome (USF) in Tampa. Won tickets for it on my birthday as a matter of fact, from 95 YNF, the home of rock 'n roll, now defunct I believe. It would be cool if they incorporate some Sting songs into their concert repertoire. I'd be interested to see what they do with them. That bad vibe is evident in the *crowd's reception* of her performance - that bad vibe is what makes it awful, not what Joni was actually giving (or trying to give) to the crowd. It's pretty amazing actually how tolerant she had become by that point; I was just listening to a '76 show last week where she's singing Harry's House and has to stop because someone is taking her picture.
