Reds are sweet and greens are sour, and a bowl of orange ones are nice, too... Remember the when we were all talking about peppers? Ha. That stayed with me. Whenever I go to the grocery store and see the bright shiny vibrantly colored peppers all stacked up, I think of all the peppery people at this party (a.k.a the jmdl). Today I saw this peperonato recipe and thought it might make a good dish for somebody. I can picture Ms. Treegreen slicing up peppers as she gazes out at the barn. None get the gristle or the marrow bone cuz there's no meat! PEPERONATA Serve this on toasted bread rounds like bruschetta or over cooked pasta. I also like it spread warm on a baguette with fresh mozzarella cheese and arugula. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 yellow onion, halved and sliced thinly into sticks 2 pounds mixed bell peppers (yellow, red and green), halved, seeded and thinly sliced 1 hot chili pepper such as a long hot green, poblano or Hungarian hot wax pepper, cored, seeded and cut in lengthwise strips Water, as needed 2 ripe plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped 1/3 cup chopped flat leaf parsley Salt, to taste Heat the olive oil in a non-reactive skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and onions and cook, stirring, 5 to 7 minutes until soft without browning. Add the peppers, stir into the onions, cover the pan and cook 20 minutes over low heat until the peppers are very tender. Check occasionally and stir to make sure they are not sticking to the bottom, adding a little water if needed. Add the tomatoes, parsley and salt, cover and continue to cook 10 minutes. The same is true on the Patti Smith front. (those of you what don't like her none are reading this, why?;-) She will be inducted into the RnRHOF by Her new album, Twelve, is due out in April. This is an album of covers. When i heard about this last year i was worried. Why would someone known for their writing go and do this? Same i wondered of Joni in 2000. Of course, Patti is also a great interpreter imo (gloria, land of a thousand dances, privelge (set me free), trampin', when doves cry.... and live i'd seen her do great versoins of be my baby, salt of the earth, heart shaped box and others). Here's the setlist: Are you experienced? Everybody Wants to Rule The World Helpless Gimme Shelter Within You Without You White Rabbit Changing of the Guards The Boy In The Bubble Soul Kitchen Smells Like Teen Spirit Midnight Rider Passtime Paradise I heard that Smells Like Teen Spirit features Sam Shepherd on banjo. What's this? A bluegrass version of teen spirit? Can we mosh to a bluegrass version of teen spirit? Patti makes me laugh sometimes. This week the album got some plays on BBC radio. Jonathan Ross played Everybody Wants to Rule the World. This was good. I would have to hear it again to be able to say whether i think it does anything beyond the original. It was pleasant. Johnnie Walker (standing in for Terry Wogan) played Helpless (it is dexcribed as help us on the website, but it's definitely helpless). I loved this. I was worried as i am big fan of this song. I thought it was very touching; sounded like it would have fit on her album trampin'. If you're inteested you can hear these shows on BBC webste for a little while longer. Ross: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/ross/ (skip to 2 hours and 18 minutes in i think) Walker: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wogan/playlist_friday.shtml (skip to 1 hour and 48 minutes) I know there are some Patti fans on the list (do you have your tickets for hte upcoming tour?) and i thought someone might like to listen to these songs. GARRET NPimh - Patti, "helpless helpless helpless" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 22:03:58 +0000 From: Garret Subject: Behind on digests... sjc I am way behind on digest again. I have been enjoying the HOSL discussion. This is synchronous timing. I recently put all of JOni's albums onto my ipod (it might just be winning me over!). So, i have been getting to listen to a lot of La Mitchell. A few days ago i was listening to HOSL and thinking to myself how amazing that album must have seemed upon its original release. I love jungel line; it's the song that struck me most when i first listened to HOSL. I think Monika said it reminded her of bands like radiohead andi can see wehre she is coming from. To me, there are echoes of jungle line in a lot of Bjork's more recent music (so when i heard a few years back that Bjork would be covering a joni song i harboured the fantasy that it would be jungle line, or perhaps s&l; boho dance is flooping great too). And i think that Joni has rarely been in better voice than that album (miles of aisles sounds great too). More synchronicity: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was mentioned recently too; i've been spending some time listening to Neruda Songs lately. I don't thikn i even know how to form an opinion on it! Chelsea Hotel: There was a documentary about this on BBC 3 or 4 last night. I didn't see it. I thought that's what i was tuning into but it turned out that i had missed it and ended up watching a documentary about Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side. I am a Lou Reed fan, but i know very little about him (i'm not on any LRDL). This show was so eye opening. It really connected a lot of dots for me. I've been reading about he lieks of Candy Darling and jJoe Dallesandro for years but never really understood what it was about. It struck me as such a sad life, and so today i have been trying to understand what it must have been like for them. Andy Warhol appeared to me to lack conviction in his work (in the brief clips they showed). Naybe i'll have to goo and read about Warhol and the factory again.
