Just to let you know, there are a couple of new wallpapers up on the web site; Little Green and Shades of Scarlet Conquering. I was inspired to do Scarlet because of the recent discussion here about Ronee Blakely. This bring the total number of wallpapers available to 68. Not all of them are by me of course. Please visit and grab a wallpaper while you're there. Don't forget, if you feel like trying your hand at wallpaper design, you can submit it to me and if it fits the criteria, I'll post it on the site. It just needs to be 1024 X 640 pixels and, obviously, be Joni related. I will look into other resolutions at some point. My designs are based on a particular song. If you would like to request a song to have a wallpaper made for it, let me know. I do intend to make one for every Joni song eventually. He has been at Georgia Tech installing a high-powered microscope ( the first one of its kind in the US, there are seven others) and I enjoyed getting an opportunity to see this fancy instrument. Its housed in a small, nondescript room, almost like a closet. When I got there, it was magnifying some crystallized carbon, 300 thousand times. I was able to see the atomic structure of the carbon on the view monitor. This particular model can magnify up to 800 thousand times. There is an electron beam that enables the microscope to work and an incredibly high amount of voltage, several cameras. Pretty interesting stuff though way above my head... We went to a Thai restaurant, Purple Orchid, and had some delicious Thai and then hopped over to Apres Diem to see a colleague playing some jazz. We ran into his wife, a pianist, who was actually really interested in Scott's work so we ended up talking further about science and technology and high faluttin powered microscopes, etc. The jazz was awesome as it always is. Spring break starts this weekend and I'm half tempted to run over to Savannah to see the same act I saw last weekend in Atlanta as they were totally smoking. I'll probably also hit the aquarium again, maybe do one of their behind the scenes tour which is now half off for members. It's nice too just to gaze into the gigantic tank and watch the fish swimming about, or hang with the sea lions and otters, playing about. Also, probably not many people knew this, but Georgia is home to one of the largest Kangaroo conservancies outside of Australia ( they have some where around 300 kangaroos of 8 different species as well as other endangered animals) so I may try to hop on up there as well. The top places to visit on my list are Australia, Ireland, and Japan. Spring break...I can almost feel it! "I tend more towards the melancholic when left to my own devices," Gray admits. "But then a Please Forgive Me [an up-tempo song from White Ladder] comes out or a Kangaroo [from the new album]. I love doing them live - it's great to see people getting off on them. But a lot of what I do is moodier and lots of my favourite records are that way. Nick Drake's Pink Moon to Nebraska by [Bruce] Springsteen, they're moody records. Or Hejira by Joni Mitchell and Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk: they're not exactly a laugh a minute. But Love Will Tear Us by Joy Division is uplifting even though it's not happy shit. "It's hard to be happy and not be trite. Some people manage it brilliantly - Lennon, Bob Marley, they could do it brilliantly - and it's a string to my bow, but not one that gets plucked regularly." from an interview by Bernard Zuel http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/11/10/1036308571723.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2007 09:46:36 -0600 From: "Donna Binkley" Subject: Re: Joni Mask - NJC Cassy, if possible, take a picture of it and share it with us! Angelina Josephine - Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Yippee! I was very happy to uncover a recording of this one, the only STB cover I'm aware of. And it's pretty straightforward, sticking closely to Joni's original. It does a nice job of building momentum. Most of her music is spritual in nature so this fits right in. 2. Mark Murphy - Both Sides Now: From 1970, Mark again gives us another fine jazzy Joni cover (he's also covered Barangrill & Goodbye Pork Pie Hat). Some nice flute and other colors as well. 3. Ithacapella - Big Yellow Taxi: Another Counting Crows copy from 2006, Ithacapella is an all male group from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. 4. Iris Koch/Werner Therandt - You Turn Me On I'm A Radio: 5. Iris Koch/Werner Therandt - All I Really Want To Do: 10. Iris Koch/Werner Therandt - Nathan La Franeer: 11. Iris Koch/Werner Therandt - For The Roses: 12. Iris Koch/Werner Therandt - Rainy Night House: Iris now goes by McLaughlin and is a painter in New Zealand, but back in the 70's she was a folksinger and recorded a couple of albums with German guitarist Werner Therandt. Between the two albums she covers NINE Joni songs! If you're like me you'll definitely enjoy some more than others, but both are very capable performers and don't derivate much from Joni's arrangements and stylings. 13. Jack Pezanelli - Both Sides Now: A lovely mellow electric guitar instrumental ala Tuck Andress. 14. Maine Steiners - Big Yellow Taxi: This one's a live one, also patterned after the Counting Crows cover, and might be the first Joni cover that also includes dancing as well as a little standup. 15. Dermot Hegarty - The Circle Game: Now here's an oddity...this one is a cover of the Ian Campbell Groups's cover, and also comes to us via a 45. 16. The English Group - Woodstock: Not a lot of info about these guys, from England one supposes. This was the B-side of their 45 and is pretty much a do-over of the Matthew's Southern Comfort cover. 17. Sarah Pedinotti - A Case Of You: From upstate NY, (Sarasota Springs to be exact), this one comes from Jazz singer Sarah's 2003 release and features her full band too. 18. We Together - Both Sides Now: From an obscure 70's LP on a Christian label with no information about this group, so there ya go. 19. Cinda Tilgner - The Circle Game: Hailing from Oregon, Cinda does lots of work with kids. She has a warm, friendly voice and does a very pleasant version of this one. 20. Allagash - Big Yellow Taxi: 21. Alagash - You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio: From a local Rhode Island band, recorded live in 1986. Nothing to get too excited about. And there you have it...21 tracks, 21 hits - and another chapter in the ongoing saga of the greatest series in music history (in my opinion of course). Thanks for reading, and hopefully listening. And Bene, hopefully not ALL of them will be considered as "horrible renditions". :o) Bob NP: The Arcade Fire, "Haiti" - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. Have you guys read "On The Road With Bob Dylan"....the tour from '75 that, he Joni, and everyone else and their mother was on? It seemed like for the most part they seemed ok with each other (from back then anyway). However, I do remember a passage in which Joni goes on about something or another about Bob Dylan and ends it off with calling him a hypocrite basically and not letting certain people get close enough to be friends. Although, Joni did seem a bit frazzled throughout that entire book from what I read so I think she was speaking more of the moment then in general of course. Although in that book, I really didn't like Joan Baez. I found her to be cold man. Dylan seemed alright but he was a bit distant in that book, as if he wanted to be left alone even though he was the main guy on the tour. Have you guys seen "No Direction Home?" I saw that recently and was delighted to find that Bob Dylan is so funny! - -Monika

Whilst I love the total self-exorcism of Blue, the juicy richness of FTR, the sparsity of Hejira, HOSL is the sublime combination of voluptuous, seductive rhythms and melodies, which intertwine and dance around each other with the most densely packed and layered lyrics that Joni has ever written. I have to agree with several of the contributors that this is first and foremost an album about women in all their glory and with all their faults, fragilities and hang-ups, including the men & lifestyle they end up with and, most importantly, the degree of freedom (or lack of) that the women feel they have to changes the circumstances they have found themselves in. The men, however, do not fare so well and in fact one of my few gripes about the album is that they are mainly gross one-dimensional stereotypes: the bully in E&TK, the weak impotent men in DITS and HH with male attitudes classified as fossilized in the stone age (bpetrified wood processed tall timber down to stoneb b a line that justifies the cost of the album on its own!). Perhaps Jonibs opinions of men is worthy of a thread on its own. I was really annoyed one time I got cassette tape of HOSL out of a library as they made the cardinal sin of Joni albums - they changes her order of tracks! Like Blue the sequencing takes you through a journey - not quite through the same hell that Blue takes you through but nevertheless you feel that you have grown and matured (though with SBOY that maturity comes with a price tag of concerns about fading beauty) with the artist from the innocence of the rock n' roll years of IFTKOMS through to the uneasy resolution of S&L. I say uneasy as the artist is still in the balance between darkness and light so we are still left wondering if she has the courage to make a break with the weak, needy, impotent men in DITS/HOSL/Centerpiece or the bully in E&TK. There is also the choice about whether she faces her demons and breaks away from the "Jungle Line", a wonderful metaphor for drugs ("steaming up") and the hedonistic lifestyle that goes with it. Yet in some ways Jonibs choice is to choose not to be exclusive and as refuses to be bcapsulisedb I have only talked about the words up to now but the music is overwhelming and though she was working with gifted artists it is the mark of a truly great artist that Joni has woven their talents to create something special. Indeed, it was the dialectic conversation of the Jungle Line that first grabbed my attention as my elder brother bombarded me with HOSL and Hejira C&S, etc. That of course was only the beginning: the achingly lilting piano in SBOY, the miasma of sound that powers Edith, the extro out of SOSC, the stalking melodies of HOSL, etc. Music the word bgeniusb fits for a change. I do have to agree that compared to her more intimate preceding albums HOSL has a more detached feel to it and to that extent prefaces her later work. However, unlike that later work (from WTRF to date excepting Turbulent Indigo) the lack of first personal confessional style is more than made up for by the rich, evocative language awash with Shakespeare-like allusions and nuances not paralleled in her work (although parts of DQRD come close). For example, the line in DITS b he chains with his serpent to that Ethiopian wallb wow! b sitting in a song about anima rising as well as the obvious phallic symbolism, there is the original male V female contest between Adam & Eve - especially when the line is followed soon after by the line bwash my guilt of Eden, wash and balance meb, with its allusion to baptismal redemption. Meanwhile the chains provoke images of S&M, slavery with the latter being reinforced by the reference to Ethiopia, which is one of the most conquered lands in history. My favourite song and Joni experience though is E&TK. Yes it is a bit melodramatic but wonderful nevertheless. One of her many gifts is the almost unrivalled ability to paint with words and music and in E&TK she reaches one of her zeniths. She opens with the bbig manb arriving b we ask why is he bbigb and I think of bbig daddyb in bCat on a hot tin Roofb and similarly this Mr. big meets his match b with bbig daddyb it was microscopic cancer cells, with Jonibs it is a woman he cannot fully tame. However, it is when she describes how he treats the bpassed over girlsb and btilts their faces gently to the spoonb as the music swirls and swoons that pictures explode in my head that are vivid, seedy, sad, magical, it is a btripb without drugs! - the way she juxtaposes the word bgentlyb with the overall image of total dependency and submission conjured up by the image of spoon-feeding a child, whilst also alluding to a dependency on drugs as the spoon as a tool of the trade for heroin addicts. Of course it is not a perfect album b such an entity does not exist though there times when your mood and the music/lyrics come together to create perfect moments but this album hits the spot most often than most. I'm impressed by his encyclopedic knowledge of popular song. Although he does play the occasional newish song (has played a couple by Jenny Lewis, also has played some rap), in general Dylan seems to love pretty much everything from the 1950s. But that shouldn't be a surprise- that's when he grew up. He tries to avoid things he thinks are too obvious- I think maybe I've heard only a couple Presley tunes on his show, although I'm sure he's a fan. On this latest show he played a Beatles tune (Baby's In Black) but that might only be the second time he's done that. Dylan seems to know quite a lot about jazz, r&b, blues, country, rockabilly, western swing, etc. but is also a fan of big band singers like Frank Sinatra too. So, you're likely to hear almost anything on his show. The level of quality is quite high. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2007 18:27:39 -0700 From: "L.
