You said: Very perceptive of you to notice this...especially contrasted with C&S, HOSL is a series of musical portraits instead of self-portraits. And Joni's lyrics are (in some respects) at their most complex and cryptic. While some songs are clear in their intent (Harry's House, Edith) the verbage she uses is incredibly imaginative and metaphorical AND even though she 's telling a story she's leaving much to the imagination. Is Edith content with her parasitic relationship? Is the crumbling of Harry's House (and home) his fault, or hers, or just the nature of the beast or the times? Such are the questions that gave birth to this very group! You said: <(forget Rolling Stone when they said this album was one of the worst albums of the year! Never have liked RS much.....)> Just to clarify, RS called it the worst album TITLE of the year - even then they were way off. The title is a brilliant one and ties together the album art and the lyrical theme of most of the record. I'm an RS fan but not above saying they made a goof on this one. You said, about the inclusion of the "Centerpiece" excerpt in Harry's House: Yes - and the second time Joni referenced Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, "Twisted" being the first. They way she uses it to conjure up a visual memory of a better time for the couple is just amazing, as is the segue back into her song, as if fading back to reality after a daydream. < Once again my least favourite is Edith which is funny because I read that that song is the one that is most known from this album. Is this true? > I had not heard that, but it is likely true. It's been covered more than twice as much as any other song on the album. Then again, I don't think too many folks could name anything from HOSL, commercially it was quite a contrast from the commercial hits it had and the airplay it received. At the same time its a welcome comic relief. "Centerpiece" really makes "Harry's House" work in the way that "Trouble Child" / "Twisted" doesn't work for me. In some sense Joni's use of "Centerpiece" acknowledges that her critique of suburbia is perilously close to resorting to clichi and stereotype. HOSL is in many ways a meditation on a version of the 50s-early sixties "feminine mystique" gone awry. She may deny that she's a feminist, but don't believe her. Right down to its invocation of Tennessee Williams's "Sweet Bird of Youth" HOSL is Joni's most profoundly feminist album. It's a much better record than Court and Spark. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 10:32:49 -0500 From: "anon anon" Subject: RE: Thoughts on THOSL >From: Motitan@aol.com >Reply-To: Motitan@aol.com >To: joni@smoe.org >Subject: Thoughts on THOSL >Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 17:31:56 EST >-THOSL: I like the song. Geez, I was there, age 17, when Blue was released and remember exactly where I was etc. How anyone or a critic could think that way is just a joke. I remember the first time I heard Blue - it was December 1987 and I was 17 years old. From the moment I heard the opening lines of "All I Want", I knew that this was a life changing moment. And it was. I have never been so moved by an album right from the start as I was with Blue, and 20 years later, it still has the same effect on me. My "favorite Joni album" has changed continually throughout the years, going through C&S, HOSL, Hegira, DJRD, and lately FTR (and like my favorite former North Dakotan Lori, I still love DED), but each time I spin Blue, it always rocks my world. When critics just don't seem to get it, I can only shake my head. But then again, listening to an entire Dylan album, for me, is on par with dental work, so what do I know? On a side note, I just realized something the other day - I have been on this list now for 9 years. NINE YEARS. This critic was looking for straightforward political expressions that of course were not there. Although in California (the song) there are enough hints at Joni's political preferences...But they were not enough for him so he marked the album as "bourgeois individualism". Those were the days...:-) Unfortunately, those days were gone by the time Joni did Dog eat dog, so that wasn't politically correct, either. Ironic, isn't it? I was hoping that you might be able to tell me the exact dates of when Joni Mitchell was living at the Chelsea Hotel, and which room she stayed in. I am presuming that it was before she wrote Chelsea Morning? I would be super grateful if you could get back to me asap on this! If you like, write something inside for the next person to remember you by. Only bring a book that you are willing to part with.
