I didn't see too many surprises, except for Alan Arkin, which was a pleasant one - and what a nice acceptance speech, second only to Helen Mirren. Jerry Seinfeld's 60 seconds of standup was the funniest stuff on the show. Clint Eastwood's presentation to Ennio Morricone was awkward & seemed embarrassingly unprofessional. Didn't care too much for Ellen Degeneres, she gave a feeling of "oh look, I just stumbled onto the stage of a major awards show". If they could have gotten Seinfeld and didn't, shame on them. I liked hearing Melissa Etheridge thank her wife - very cool. Also cool was Pilobolous doing the pictures behind the sheet. Didn't see alot of silly-looking costumes, except for that goofy jacket that Quincy Jones was wearing. I enjoyed Jennifer Hudson's jiggle and could hardly believe that there wasn't an unintentional wardrobe malfunction there - those puppies must have been duct-taped in. I hate that they now have ALL of the acting awards at the end...they used to do Supporting right at the start which I liked better. Celine Dion still scares the hell out of me and looked awfully silly with that 60-second pucker at the end of her song. I don't really care much for Eddie Murphy as an actor and as a pop culture celebrity, but o course I know it's just me because I know a lot of folks who can't get enough of his various guises and reincarnations in "Norbit" and "The Nutty Professor 1, 2, etc.". LIttle Miss Sunshine is a cute film but I don't think it is the best of the year. The movie's storyline and pace are so delightful up until the last few scenes when Abigail Breslin competed in the contest. A bit of a letdown and quite forced. But Alan Arkin is a good choice to be nominated in a cast of equals. Personally, Jackie Earl Haley should have won for "Little Children" but roles for child molesters have never been rewarded ("The Woodsman, Happiness, etc.). Don't really know the hype to Jenifer Hudson's trying-hard-to-be-Aretha role as Effie White. Granted that that was demanded of the role that was brought to electrifying life by Jennifer Holiday two decades ago, but Jennifer Hudson did not do it for me. Was secretly rooting for either Rinko Kikuchi or Adriana Barraza to take home the prize. Gave me goosebumps seeing Thelma Schoonmaker win on the same night as Scorsese. Marty Scorsese was tearing up a little during Thelma's acceptance speech. But Scorsese should have really deserved his award for "Raging Bull" no? Or even "Mean Streets", but "The Departed" is nice. But I ourge you all to watch "Infernal Affairs" from HongKong where "The Departed" was based. It stars the great Tony Leung. Was hoping that "My Country, My Country" will win in the category for Best Docu but "An Inconvenient Truth" is good too. Melissa Etheridge is so pretty. Almost looking like JOan Baez at times. Love her upset win over three songs from "Dreamgirls", although it was great to see Anika Noni Rose onstage. Abigail Breslin and the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith are adorable. Abigail will have a great career ahead of her. Love the tandem of Gael Garcia Bernal and Eva Green and the double entendres. Also the trio of John C. Reilly, Jack Black and Will Ferrell. The most anticipated category for me and my friends is the Best Foreign Language Film and I was a bit surprised and disappointed that Gullermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" did not win but "The Lives of Others" is also very good. Much like Coppola's "The Conversation" but more heartbreaking. I like the montage of foreign films as introduced by the ageless Catherine Deneuve and that tribute to Ennio Morricone though I agree that Eastwood seems so in awe of Morricone that the whoe thing looked painfully embarrassing. I would have wanted the orchestra to do "Love Affair" for its sweeping score but the score for "the Mission" complete with the some of the most beautiful scenes from the movie made my hair stand. Choosing Celine Dion to sing a lovely Morricone theme is just beyond me considering so many talented and less recognized singers out there. They can start with Lizz Wright who would have given a song a soulful and poignant reading without schmaltz. Too bad, Peter O'Toole didnt win. Loved him in "Venus" and I thought it was a very beautiful and tender performance, both as a master class in subtlety and a wink to his cinematic career. Helen Mirren is so beautiful and so hot. I was actually rooting for Penelope Cruz who to me gave the best performance of the year but Mirren is not to be denied. Ellen was funny in some segments (the one where he asked Steven Spielberg to get a photo of herself and Eastwood was almost unrehearsed) but quite flatin others. Generally love her if it all comes down to either liking her or disliking her. Yeah Seinfeld would have done a better job. Or JOn Stewart again (but then I am ahuge fan of The Daily Show, so I am biased here), but I thought they should just tap Sarah Silverman as host next year. HIlarious to see Robert Downey, Jr making a reference to his errant ways, or John Travolta lluding to his upcoming role as the mother in "Hairspray". Maybe 2008 will reverse the trend. Hope so. That will never happen and it shouldn't. Yeah, I like Ellen's standup comedy but am getting tired of her, "I'm just a regular person" routine and just wanted that part over with so they could get on with the show and finish by 11 p.m. > Didn't see alot of silly-looking costumes, except > for that goofy jacket > that Quincy Jones was wearing. I didn't realize it was Q but your mention of "silly-looking costumes" suddently clued me in. Apart from his, everyone else looked downright staid. I enjoyed Jennifer > Hudson's jiggle and > could hardly believe that there wasn't an > unintentional wardrobe > malfunction there - those puppies must have been > duct-taped in. I find that stuff embarassing. I wonder if she has seen that look in her mirror? If she were a contestant on "American Idol", just imagine what Simon would have to say about it! I don't like the fact that they so often give out Oscars to people who should have won them years ago for something that was quite good, and are now being awarded just because they've survived (Scorsese, for example.) (Just saw "The departed" on the weekend, and I guess I just don't get the hype over it. There's nothing enlightening about seeing people getting their heads blown off and I certainly didn't learn anything from it. It just encourages my paranoia and my belief that people just ain't no good.) I'm glad for Helen Mirren that she won, because she's a great actor and a very classy woman, but I'm sure she has played much better roles than the Queen. Whatever. I haven't seen enough of the films to know which one I thought was really "the best" but films don't win for being the best. Often it's because the issue is popular, ("An inconvenient truth" and Melissa E's song, for example - are they "better" or just popular causes right now?) or because several others are too controversial, so the winner wins because opinions are divided on several others. Generally I find the "best songs" to be boring and forgettable when you compare them to other music that's out there. I'd have liked to have seen more non-American or non-English-speaking people win, just because I like to be contrary that way. I'm glad that Ennio Morricone made his speech in Italian, and that other woman who won for best doc, who spoke a Chinese language, and I think it's very positive that it's accepted that they do this. Anything that promotes cross-cultural understanding and whirled peas is a plus for me. Try this one: http://jmdl.com/guitar/tab.cfm?id=181 You're just using two fingers, mostly in the same position relative to one another, moving up and down the frets. I've tried it and it sounds pretty cool, but I find it awkward, and if it's not the right key for you, it would be difficult to transpose it, since it goes up to the 13th fret. And who would have imagined Gustav Mahler being so influential on hiphop/rhythm&blues? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzHAjdrin-k&NR Much as I love Joni's music and her perspective on the world, I think sometimes she should take a wee bit of a look around to see what other people are singing and doing. She said no one was talking about the things she did in DED at that time. But what about Bruce Cockburn - he recorded If I Had a Rocket Launcher at around that time period - it's about strife in Chiappas, Mexico. Or take a look at this video Marianne Faithfull did in 1979 - certainly her theme is a friend of spirit to DED - the bass line in the music even sounds a bit like Good Friends are We (and it predated DED by 6 years): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzHAjdrin-k&NR Basta. On one hand she will say she is not plugged in to the current scene, on the other she will generalize about it's content-oh well. Sometimes I think great artists are wired to be overly opinionated, in order to sift the wheat from the chaff in their own works. There is so much good information here ("giving out anything for them to grow and feed on"), in my opinion. Others will disagree, of course. NPIMH: Neil Young -- "Let's Impeach the President" ****** Impeach07 Campaign Launched The impeachment movement is uniting and expanding. Democrats.com is joining with many other organizations to launch Impeach07, a coordinated series of nationwide actions aimed at impeaching Bush and Cheney through widespread public protest, creative dissent, media activism, education, and lobbying: http://www.impeach07.org Bush and Cheney have misled this nation into an aggressive war, spied in open violation of the law, and sanctioned the use of torture - among numerous other offenses. Newsweek reported in October that a majority of Americans favor impeachment, and in January that 58% said they wished the Bush administration were over. "Only a great popular upheaval," historian Howard Zinn said recently, "can push both Republicans and Democrats into compliance with the national will." We need to end the Iraq War and prevent an Iran War, and impeachment is the way we will do it. On March 17, the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war (and the 40th anniversary of the famous 1967 March on the Pentagon), Impeach07 will mobilize for a March on the Pentagon to demand peace and impeachment: http://www.marchonpentagon.org On March 18-20, Impeach07 will organize local events for peace and impeachment around the country: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/event Impeach07 is also planning: A "Make Hip Hop, Not War" bus tour promoting peace and impeachment on March 19 - April 21: http://www.hiphopcaucus.org A boycott of major corporations that are profiting from the Bush administration's policies, making a killing off of killing, on April 15- 22: http://www.wearenotbuyingit.org And a nationwide day of protest: Impeachment Day, April 28, 2007: http://www.a28.org _______________________ NM Leads State Race to Send Impeachment Resolution to Congress House rules allow impeachment to begin with a Resolution from one state legislature. Three states have begun the process - NM, WA, and VT - and NM has an early lead... 1. New Mexico's resolution (SJR 5) cleared its first hurdle last Friday when it passed the Rules Committee on a unanimous 5-0 vote. Citizens turned out in force and gave powerful emotional appeals for impeachment. Incredibly, not a single Republican showed up to defend Bush! (Is that a signal that Republicans want to quietly help Democrats impeach Bush before the 2008 election to avoid a repeat of the 2006 GOP wipeout?) The NM bill must clear two more committees before it goes to the full Senate. Video and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/nm http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_nm.html 2. In Washington State, Senator Eric Oemig's Resolution (SJM 8016) will have its first hearing on March 1. Activists led by "state-at-home mom" Linda Boyd will hold a rally for impeachment and investigations in Olympia on the Capitol steps in at 1:00 p.m. Video and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/wa http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_wa.html 3. In Vermont, Rep. Daryl Pillsbury's resolution (JRH-15) has 22 co-sponsors, with 75 needed for passage. State legislators are getting heavy anti-impeachment pressure from Vermont's Members of Congress, so a strong grassroots movement is urgent. Cindy Sheehan and John Nichols will barnstorm VT for impeachment from March 2-4. Audio and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/vt http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_vt.html The main argument against state (and local) resolutions has been that states (and towns) should not get involved in national policy. Of course states have always been involved - state legislatures actually appointed U.S. Senators until 1913, and have always weighed in on national issues. Right now 20 legislatures are considering resolutions against Bush's escalation in Iraq. It's time for all state legislatures to call for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney! I feel I can give my thoughts on the album now (I'll give you my opinion on Hejira probably tomorrow). Overall, it may be a bit early to say this as it is so new, but I think I love this album! THOSL was one of the albums I grabbed to take to listen to at work and I was excited to listen to it again! I even stopped working for a few seconds at a time to listen closely to my favorite parts of certain songs (hey man music comes first always!). A big change I see in this album vs. the earlier ones is Joni's perspective. It's like she's looking outside rather than inside perhaps. And I love, love, love Joni's singing on the entire album. After reading some reviews just before, I find it strange how I kept reading the word "smug" in reviews of this album. I don't find the tone of the album smug at all. I think it's very inviting to the listener as long as the listener is willing. Forget smug man. A little bit on the songs now: - -IFTKOMS: This is one of my favorites. From the very memorable guitar opening all the way through the very catchy and pleasant song this is, it stands strong. - -The Jungle Line: Another favorite! For lack of a better word, I think this song is so cool. I love the drums, the synth, and what the song conveys. It's a very experimental song and it works. This song clicked right away. It also reminds me of some of the experimental rock that came about much later---bands like Radiohead or Tool...or to a more extreme....industrial music like Nine Inch Nails. Very interesting. - -E&TK: I like this song but it's definitely one of my least favorites. I find the other songs more memorable. - -DITS: Another favorite! Once again, I love Joni's guitar on here. There's just something about this song. I have no words to describe it though. - -SOSC: Oh, such a melancholic song. Joni's singing is so honest here, this song almost breaks my heart with what it is about. - -THOSL: I like the song. It puts you in a certain mood and makes you think. Love when songs do that. - -The Boho Dance: Another wonderful song (forget Rolling Stone when they said this album was one of the worst albums of the year! Never have liked RS much.....). It makes me a bit sad. - -Harry's House/Centerpiece: Another favorite! My favorite part of this song and maybe my favorite part of the whole album is when Joni sings, "the more I'm with you pretty baby...." I suppose you'd call it the bridge. This is the cover part of the song, yes? Anyway, I love this whole part because I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY LOVE JONI'S SINGING OF IT. Her voice is incredible man. Just gets me so much and that part even more so! - -Sweet Bird: A very beautiful song. Almost simple sounding.....it just has an elegant beauty to it. - -Shadows & Light: Another favorite! I love the vocal melody and once again Joni's singing, all of it! What an ambitious piece. I'm not religious or anything but it reminds me of a prayer in a church especially with the multiple voices responding (I haven't been to a church since my 1st communion....I like the Eastern religions to be honest....). Just beautiful. So I suppose I like the entire album now that I look at it. Once again my least favourite is Edith which is funny because I read that that song is the one that is most known from this album. Is this true? I noticed Edith And The Kingpin is the song that is on the tribute album being done by Elvis Costello. So that's that as I see it. - -Monika

Have both the cassette and the album of most of her recordings and couldn't see spending the extra money to buy the cd's of them, as well as many other artists. While recording it and listening to it intently I realize why I love her so. This album could have been named 'the masterpiece' for it truly is one. Some say 'she ain't no Joni Mitchell.' I first thought of signing up for this new mp3 program, Ruckus, which offers free downloads to students. But upon further investigation, I discovered, one, it doesn't work on the Mac OS (the only way to do it is to go to a lot of trouble to run Windows which I don't want to do) and, two, once you graduate, you have to pay them a monthly fee to continue accessing the music you have downloaded. So that was a dead end. But it finally occurred to me, I'm overlooking a valuable resource....the library! While they don't have everything, they certainly have a lot and I already have discovered music I otherwise probably wouldn't have. And I don't feel guilty downloading music to my itunes library for several reasons...one, I'm a student and having this music will greatly enhance my progress, two, I've already spent a lot of money buying music and would otherwise not be able to afford any more, three, I'm doing it solely for myself, and four, the library has already paid for it so I'm simply making something more accessible to me that is available for free anyway. Anyhow, I think itunes is a wonderful thing. And I totally agree with you, Mack, about apples and peaches. I think everybody should be themselves as that is what they are probably best at.
