As for my fave bit of Joni singing, I can never get further than the impossibly sad, surging 'Woo-oh-wooh-oh-whooooos' as Song For Sharon hits about a third of the way through. Impenetrable pain, unconfined joy and the whole damn enchilada! Love Rob Quote from Jim L: I'll catalog some references in the 1st verse. Maybe someone will take it from there. Joni said, 1.Out of the fire like Catholic saints 2.Comes Scarlett and her deep complaint 3.Mimicking tenderness she sees 4.In sentimental movies 5.A celluloid rider comes to town 6.Cinematic lovers sway 7.Plantations and sweeping ballroom gowns 8.Take her breath away 1. "Gone With The Wind" is the story of a southern woman, Scarlett O'Hara (if I recall) who's world is crumbling. In fact, the jewel of the south, Atlanta, burned. 2. Yet Scarlett rose again. I didn't read the book, but in the movie, Scarlet was a deeply conflicted character who was secretly in love with a married man. Through it all, she imagined everything was going to magically congeal into her imagined life. If I recall, her last words were "I can't think about that now. If I did, I'd go crazy. I know; I'll think about that tomorrow." 3/4. Joni wrote a composite of characters. Here, she's tying the present-day character to an idealized past. But it's not just Scarlett's idealized past, it's also the present-day character dreaming about a life as good as her imagined life. The present-day character is imagining that her dreamscape will come to life, just as Scarlett imagined the plantation would be made whole, and she'd marry Ashley. 5/6. The author reminds us 3 times that the second character is illusory, imaginary, a work of fiction. (sentimental movies, celluoid rider, cinematic lovers) The present-day character is a dreamer too. But Scarlett is doubly a dreamy character. Not only is she locked in dreams, but she only exists in fiction. For today's character, Scarlett is both a looking glass and an imperfect mirror. She is both the ideal and the cautionary tale. 7/8. Imagery from "Gone With the Wind". Jim L. PS, Scarlet is a synonym for "blood-red" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 15:55:38 -0500 (EST) From: "Gerald A. "Makin' Pies" by Patty Griffin is pretty sad, too. I love lists so let's keep at it. If you HAD to make a list of your favorite singers, who would be on it and why? My favorite singers [IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER]: - -Roger Daltrey: I'd have to say he may be the very best rock-n-roll singer out there. He can do the whole tenor rock singing style....the deeper growl......everything in between and most of all, I have not heard anyone sing with more passion than him. - -John Lennon: He's a very unique singer in the fact that he does whatever he wants to do. You can hear the many influences on him. - -Elvis Presley: They don't call him the King for nothing. Though his skills as an entertainer often overshadow his vocals, he sure left a good load of vocal performances behind. - -Joni Mitchell: Yes, I put her on here. It was her singing more than anything that first caught my attention. And Joni sings like no one else! - -Stephen Stills: I don't care for Stills as a person from what I know, but I can't deny his talent. 4 Way Street really did me in as far as Stephen is concerned. - -David Ruffin/the rest of the guys in the Temptations: David Ruffin in particular was my favorite but you can't deny the fact that these guys could sing. And boy could they sing well. And really anyone in Motown is fantastic. - -Freddie Mercury: Ok, I really don't like Queen. They are too theatrical for me, but Freddie Mercury was a talent like no other. I can't lie nor can I deny. - -Shirley Manson: (from Garbage) Her singing is what I like the most about Garbage. Its got so much appeal. - -CSN as a whole: I cheated a bit here by putting three guys together. But I'm sorry their harmonies just kill me. That blend of voices is something no one can explain. - -And if not but for just one song, the Righteous Brothers: Ok, I only know Unchained Melody by them but Jesus, is this not one of the most outstanding vocal performances you have ever heard??!?! Blows me away man. Honorable mentions: Neil Young: Ok, so he's not technically a *good* singer in the definition of pitch and so forth. However, I really love his voice. Neil Young sings with more conviction than anyone else. He could sing, "hey my dog smells, it sucks" and I'd be nodding my head thinking, "oh man, mine too, it does suck!" Does that make sense? - -David Gilmour/Roger Waters: David is technically the better singer but Roger is the one whose voice I like better---if not just for the fact that at one minute he can sound so vulnerable and the next he can sound like a maniac (listen to Roger Waters' the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking for an example!). Of course I give credit where credit is due to David for that "oomph" he always puts in. - -Jack Bruce: Although overshadowed by Clapton, and more looked at as a bassist (a damn good one too!), he sure can wail with the best of them. - -Chris Cornell: (from Soundgarden and Audioslave) Ok, I don't even really like bands he has been in but he is another one I would classify as a "rock-n-roll" singer like no other. He can sing high, he can sing low, etc etc. - -George Harrison: He is so underrated in every way. I love him to bits really. His voice was so sweet and soft. Truly an overshadowed gem. - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 19:15:42 -0500 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: One person's list "The 10 saddest songs I've Ever Heard" NJC Anache Gordon, a traditional song sung by Mary Black, *always* makes me cry real tears. It's just a silly old ballad about a woman forbidden by her father to marry the man she loves, and she and her lover both kill themselves, yada yada. It's Mary's voice that sells the song, really. I Can't Make You Love Me, sung by Bonnie Raitt. I don't know what to say about this song. The haunting resignation. "I will lay down my heart, and I'll feel the power, but you won't." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 17:59:00 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: One person's list "The 10 saddest songs I've Ever Heard" Mine would be "The Magdelene Laundries"...I can't make it past "Peg O'Connell died today.
