I can almost see the Governor's mansion! Your choice of songs were very good and I'm glad you made a great impression on everyone there! This is a very good thing because it gives you another opportunity to play music whcih you love with all of your heart! It does my heart good friend! Love, Sherelle From: Victor Johnson Just got home from playing at the Governor's mansion. It was pretty cool and was over before I knew it. They had a 100 year old Steinway which actually had a really nice feel to it and a nice tone. I only ended up doing one Joni song, Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody though I'm not sure anyone there recognized the former but that's okay. Did some jazz standards (Autumn Leaves, My Funny Valentine, You Are Too Beautiful, etc...), some Beatles, Georgia on My Mind, old Stevie Wonder (Blame it on the Sun/ Next Time I Fall in Love) and the last song I played was the piano part from the end of Layla which is fun to play because you just want to go on and on and on. Got my picture taken with the Governor and his wife and when he was mentioning me to the assembly of legislators and such, he said as I was studying music at Georgia State but as far as he was concerned, I was already there, that he would give me a diploma, and by the power of the general assembly pronounced me finished with my schooling. So I guess that means I'm off the hook for my quiz tomorrow. I'm officially on their call list now so presumably I'll be able to come back and do it again sometime. This is one not to be missed. It is so good to hear what she has to say these days. Helps us make it through these waves. O, speak again, bright angel! I was struck by how serious and deeply committed she is (not that we ever doubted that): My heart is broken in the face of the stupidity of my species, she said. I cant cry about it. In a way Im inoculated. Ive suffered this pain for so long. We were expelled from Eden. What keeps us out of Eden? She thought about this for a moment before riffing on a Dylan line: I tried to tell everybody, but I could not get it across. **** You got it across to *us*, Joni. Yes, you did! ***** Well, Im being more specific now, she allowed. The West has packed the whole world on a runaway train. We are on the road to extincting ourselves as a species. Thats what I meant when I said that weve got to get ourselves back to the garden. ***** We hear you loud and clear, Joni. And on a lighter note, it was interesting to see that she has gone from travelling travelling travelling in a Pinto (still can't picture that one....lol!) to a Lexus! And that she's still a night owl ("up all night in the studio"). A Joni Renaissance just at this moment of the world....how lucky we are! Done with his thick Irish accent and jig-like melody he lays down the law of "If". Growing up I remember seeing a couple of different posters of Kipling's "If" so it seems it had an effect on several generations. I can't wait to hear what Joni does whith it. Thanks for clarifying that I was the originator of "The Guitardos." I was about to launch myself into deep throes of despair. BTW, I got Shadows and Light on CD last night, and I think it inspired me to write a song. It's jazzy (at least in my mimd), it has some crazy Joni phrasing, and it's called "Ordinary Bliss." My greatest critic (myself) actually thinks it ain't bad. You all may think it sucks, but don't tell me. Without bridge, chorus and un-editied, it goes: as a child you dreamed of show-biz fame and glitz the dream has turned to hopelessness and an urge to call it quits now you know that's not what is and never will be true as you look back at your life look back at ordinary you who dreamed of Hollywood kisses but now you hear the voices chanting, "the dream's been traded for unwise choices" one day you'll understand you've traded dreams for bliss and now you have to find a way to live with this now I grieve my girlhood with its lonely wilderness and I never dreamed it would come to this I never thought I'd have to learn how much was given and never earned and how I'd finally understand and how I'd learn to love this ordinary bliss yet it's finally come to this it's come to this I hope that wasn't too painful to read. It is very much in need of structure, but I'm so pleased with myself for writing anything (after, oh, say 30 years of dry spell) that I had to subject all of you to my unfinished song.
