Thanks to my buddy Paul for his contribution to this one. Here's where you can go to get it: http://www.yousendit.com/download/KUD6qCwIp3l5TA%3D%3D And here's what you'll find: 1. Marc Copland - Rainy Night House: This is the SECOND time that Marc has recorded this song, (he had forgotten about the first one until I reminded him) - true story. It's an instrumental, very brooding and subtle and takes off in some creative improvisational solo directions. 2. Freddie White - Trouble Child: Sweet! We don't get many recordings of this one - Pazfest was the last one - and the song is in good hands with Ireland's Freddie White playing it in a live setting. 3. Ian & Helen C - Big Yellow Taxi: Peppy & Synthy. I keep waiting for it to break into that Van Halen "Jump" riff at the end. 4. Keith James - Woodstock: My favorite track on the disc - an entirely different feel than your basic Woodstock cover, yet pretty much sticks to the melody so it's not so far out. His voice is really nice and the soprano sax is great. Everything about it is great in fact. 5. Nancy Hunter - River: A nice arrangement, and Nancy, who hails from England, has a really clear and pretty voice. The only flaw to me is her over-enunciation of the lyrics at times. But it's a minor complaint - the track is a strong one. 6. Hayley Westenra - Both Sides Now: We featured the live recording that Hayley did a few volumes back. Here is the studio take from her, very lovely with a fine lush (without being sappy) accompaniment. 7. Sharon Bradley - Urge For Going: 8. Sharon Bradley - Carey: I have to admit that I'm not real nutty on Sharon's voice, but these are pretty rare in that they were recorded in the 80's, not a very fertile time for Joni covers. Nice instrumentation, especially the flute. 9. Eishu - Circle Game: Another Asian female take on TCG, but a bit more creative in terms of accompaniment (piano, bass, drums), a little jazz flavor. 10. Siggi Schwarz & The Rock Legends - Woodstock: Inspired by the CSNY classic, this band's lineup includes Steve Lukather (Toto), Michael Schenker (UFO) and Geoff Whitehorn (Procol Harum) among others. Lots of guitars, and really, can you ever have too much guitar? 11. Bernardo Lanzetti - Big Yellow Taxi: What a strange voice. Sounds like Cat Stevens with a hit of helium. The band is enjoyable though, especially the sax. 12. Lamajam - Woodstock: Pretty much a soundalike copy of CSNY...and they did this why? 13. Ricky Page - Chelsea Morning: Another 80's recording, hard to believe though - the arrangement is strictly "Love, American Style" mellow 70's. I really like CM so I almost automatically dig a cover of it. 14. Bob Plews and Friends - A Case Of You: All I hear is Bob...if there were any friends they would convince him NOT to sing. 15. Chanel Cole - River: Another track you won't find in the store. Chanel is from Australia, the vocal is a little wispy and thin but on the whole OK. 16. Todd Gordon - Both Sides Now: When this one starts, you'll think you're heading in a cheesy direction, but stay with it...his velvet fog voice is easy on the ear and the jazz arrangement is very nice. I'm a sucker for that trumpet. This was from Todd's 2005 CD called "Love's Illusions" so he even named his album after the song. 17. Megalomaniacs - Big Yellow Taxi: This one's an older college acapella recording of BYT so it's not influenced by Counting Crows the way so many of them have been of late. The Megalomaniacs hail from Colby College. 18. Fresh Cut Salads - Woodstock: And here's another really unique take on Woodstock, a semi-lounge electronica laid back take. There's a really nice quiet groove going on here, hope you can find it. And thanks to the band for sending it to me - it never saw an official release. OK, so there they are - my takes on these tracks. I'd love to hear what you think. See you again in a couple of weeks for another retro edition, and another brand new batch in a month. Like McFadden & Whitehead said..."ain't no stopping us now". Bob NP: Lamajam, "Woodstock" _____________________________________________________________________________ _______ The fish are biting.
