If you havent ordered yet, the deluxe edition is in very short supply so order now to be guaranteed a copy. We usually ship the same day that you place your order. More details about Sermon and the extra features in the deluxe edition: The Album The recording began in a painter's loft on an abandoned industrial street in mid-L.A in the summer of '05. Lee Cantelon, who can best be described as a modern renaissance man, originally conceived the project as a lo-fi, low budget undertaking, a spoken word interpretation of The Words, his book of Christ's teachings. The project changed directions, though, when Rickie showed up to record her part. Instead of reciting the text, she stunned everyone in the studio by improvising an entire song to a track she had never heard. "Nobody Knows My Name is that first recording. So began the inspired musical and textural improvisations that would become THE SERMON ON EXPOSITION BOULEVARD, an intuitive and beautiful collection. The Documentary The entire recording process was filmed and photographed on High Definition video and is included on the Deluxe edition including a 24-page booklet and six-panel Digipak, featuring additional art and photography from the recording sessions. The package includes an SACD with higher resolution Stereo and 5.1 Surround mixes of the album (playable on standard CD players) and a DVD with over a dozen short film "chapters documenting the recording sessions, Rickies international tour performances, and more. The DVD also contains 256k MP3s of the entire album for higher quality downloads to portable devices such as iPods. The years listed with the song titles during thye performace segments are a direct reference to the year they were published - not the year of the clip. So, the "nightgown" clip is actually from the New Vic Theater in London, '74...and it IS a particularly powerful reading of the song. With Joni's voice settling into alto-land ala smoke and powder, it gives the tune an added wisdom that the more shrill original lacks. They aren't myths, but they also aren't going to be ready really soon, unfortunately. My contact at Rhino assures me they do exist, which is comforting...but when probed further for speculative CD 2 content, etc. he told me nothing had been officially signed off yet. So they are still in the planning stages....don't know WHY amazon hasn't gotten with the program on that front. It's funny (sort of) - when I write about reissues from Legacy, they often send me these funky little advances in plastic sleeves with paper inserts (before the final artwork is approved) - and the info on them mimics the notes one would find on the back of the recording studio's reel2reel boxes in the old days with little scribbles and notes that say 'fixed' or 'corrected' and 'approved' with a date. I guess a lot of fussing goes into these sets. It's usually something in the artist's camp that holds them up, quite honestly (maybe our JM is taking her time sifting through old demos and such...which might not be such a bad thing for her to be doing while she's working on her new CD)The Pearl expansion from last year was pushed a total of 18 months due to hold-ups with the Joplin estate.... I fear the HoSL set will probably just have the demos we've already got on it...I'm just dying for some non-live JM rarities at this point...demos DEMOS GIVE ME DEMOS AND OUTTAKES OR GIVE ME DEATH. I recently got an email from an old, old high school friend who had a JM fixation back then...he just happened to end up living next door to Joel Bernstein for a while and was privy to lots of rarely seen candid photography. When I asked him about non-concert JM rarities he (tellingly) clammed up...he's holding out on me! Anyhoo - that's the news. Same-sex couples married outside of Canada will now be fully recognized as spouses for immigration purposes after a controversial temporary policy was annulled last week. The policy was introduced in June 2004, soon after Quebec became the third province to legalize gay marriage. When same-sex marriage was made legal throughout Canada in 2005, the bar on foreign gay marriages remained in place. The policy recognized same-sex marriages for immigration purposes only if the ceremony was performed in Canada, and if at least one of the partners was Canadian or a permanent resident. It also clearly stated: "If you were married outside Canada, you cannot apply to sponsor your same-sex partner as a spouse." In December, CanWest News Service reported on the struggle of same-sex rights group LEGIT to end the "maddening" policy, prompting NDP immigration critic Bill Siksay to spotlight the "huge inconsistency" at a parliamentary committee and press the government for change. "To have a policy on the books that departed from full equality, that treated gay and lesbian couples that were legally married in other jurisdictions in a fundamentally different way than heterosexual couples, was wrong," said Siksay. Now the government has agreed. In a letter sent Jan. 24 to the immigration committee, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Diane Finley said that although "it was necessary for the department to take the appropriate time" to review the matter, the policy has been changed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 14:38:57 -0500 From: "Jenny Goodspeed" Subject: Re: Paz not going .doc What you need Mike is a good dose of 'Friends' or 'Seinfeld' or 'The Simpsons'! And considering what Rhino has produced over the last few years and the spotty quality of a lot of their reissues/remasters. I'd rather see them left well enough alone than to see them do another botch job on them. I don't mean to sound contrary but if they're going to charge 28.99 for these wonderful reissues they'd better be damn well perfect and those that I did purchase this last year I was quite disappointed with. I had suspected they may have hit a snag with Joni herself. There was word back in her Geffen years that she wanted to do a box set of unreleased material and there was some kind of deal struck with David Geffen about NRH selling X number of copies and she'd get to do the box then Geffen backed out on the deal (has there been anyone on any of his labels through the years he hasn't either pissed off or sued or screwed over?). I respect Joni too much as an artist to demand she release the, no doubt, mass volume of stuff she's probably got vaulted away. I trust her integrity to believe that if she doesn't think the material is good enough or she doesn't want it heard or may have other plans for it, it's NOT going to happen and I'm quite okay with that. Beautifully said! Same experience here... I love all the news and takes on Joni we have here. What an awesome thing this discussion list is! I had a friend call me last night and ask me about playing guitar, some kind of assignment for a music class she's taking. When she asked me who was the guitarist who has inspired me and influenced me the most... Joni Mitchell of course!!! Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 17:15:20 EST From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Urge For Going I was just wondering if any of you have heard Crosby & Nash's cover of this song? It's such a beautiful rendition with their harmony vocals and all. In fact, this is how I first heard of the song. I had liked this song for a while now and then a while back noticed it was written by Joni. Of course, that was before I had started getting into her. I just thought, wow, they sure do cover a lot of Joni Mitchell songs. I was a bit curious to hear the original before but not enough, you know (just as I was curious about Woodstock but I still was unfamiliar with Joni's material sans a couple songs and these covers)? Anyway, a month or so ago I got the album "Hits" from the library just for this song! I thought well it's time to hear the original. I just think the original is so beautiful. It takes me to a place where I am alone on a higher plane almost. I really like the sentiment of this song. I can understand the urge for going, especially now with so much on my mind. I also relate very well to wanting to leave because winter is hell! Especially now with x number of inches on the ground in Ohio here....and an artic front coming this weekend bring the temps to single digits. I remember driving to work a couple weeks back when it was snowing oh so heavily. I grabbed this album and played the song over and over and over again. It got me through the snowy drive! I really need sunshine and temps in the 70's+. What do you think of the song? I really love the guitar on the song as well. That opening is so hypnotic. - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 14:17:21 -0800 From: "Jill Haas" Subject: Jonifest 2007 Challenge The JoniFest 2007 Challenge: Ok, I will state this right out front: I am unabashedly lobbying for a scholarship to go to Jonifest this year. The Challenge: Please contribute something to the scholarship fund so that us newbees to JDML and perhaps some long-time JDMLees who are experiencing financial hardship at this particular moment can make it there. I'm willing to drive to NY from Seattle in order to bring a great Roland piano and amp, and at least four guitars (so we can have guitars ready in many Joni tunings). I would also be willing to pick up anyone along the way, and hopefully you can help with the gas costs for the Honda CRV. I also promise to take many photos and write all about the event (including any debauchery, done tastfully...) so that those who can't attend will be able to live the event vicariously. Depending on funding, however, those who ride with me should be prepared to camp, unless someone can chip in for a motel room so we can shower of the dust and sleep on the strange white pillows of our wanderlust. Please take pity on us and contribute. Think of the money you are saving by not going!!! C'mon people now, smile on your brothers and sisters. Ok, There's my sales pitch. I also like the smell of gasoline just for a random sidenote)! Aromas are like colors. There is an "aroma wheel" that is used in the wine world in the way that there is a color wheel for art and rendering pigment and light. Just as there is a quadrant of color that is , for example, aqua becoming blue becoming indigo and then violet, there is a quandrant in the aroma wheel that is chemical in nature, and petrol (often present in the nose of the finest, aged, cold climate Rieslings) would be adjacent to smells of plastic (cds) and tar. If we follow along, those chemical smells are adjacent to the smells of mold and mushroom which then become smells of burnt toast and coffee. So, just as people often favor a certain palette of color, people often also favor a particular range of smells! I would be willing to bet that you also like the smell of magic marker and sharpie pen! (and there is NOTHING wrong with that!) I love your enthusiasm and your surprising knowledge and inquisitive urge to learn about all things Joni. Those of us who experienced the new releases first-hand did wait with our breath held for "the next one in the nest" knowing that it would glitter for us so. (For the Roses). I was a musician and spent a lot of time as a Joni fan trying to make others hear what I heard in each new release. I'm sure I was a pain in the ass. Eventually, I found some other musicians who were at least half as in love with her music as I was, but not one of them compares in their appreciation of Joni's music than those I've found on this list. Thanks for all of your input. The pictures of the Canadian Songwriters induction were beautiful.
