So I assumed this one would be too, and searched madly all over my satellite-tv guide, but no, no! What the hell? I was terribly disappointed, but have my fingers crossed that it will air sometime this week. He is such a great guitar player, and the guitar he was playing had such a beautiful tone to it. I really hope they air the entire show and don't do a French-only or English-only version that the rest of the country won't be able to see or hear. The French music and musicians were wonderful and reminded me how lucky I am to live in an officially bilingual country, but what a terrible shame it is that few people outside of Quebec would have a clue about who Jean-Pierre Ferland and the others whose songs were inducted, and the brilliant francophone singers and musicians were that performed last night. It must have been wonderful.. Your later post struck a chord with me, particularly the quotation below.... Its funny to think of how we review our own nationality. To me, someone being a Canadian puts them up there as the "good guys". I love my Canadian friends dearly and am always moved by their command of the understatement, their humour which can be savagely self-depricating, their quiet pride in their nationality, their lack of blood lust (even those I know who hunt do so with grace and a respect for their prey). And yet I know as with all nationalities you have your "fruitloops" your nutters, the brash and the brazen but I have never met any. I have been to Canada several times and it always feels like I have come home. There is something very familiar about Canada and its ways. I know it was a British dominion, but that does not explain it enough.. I can look at my CD and LP collection and there is Neil Young, Joni, Sarah McLachlan, Loreen McKennitt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Alanis Morisette, the Wailing Jennies, Tara McLean, the Rankin Family, Minglewood, Kd Lang, Some Canafian Folk stuff, Gordon Lightfoot. Leonard Cohen. and a few more I cannot recall "just like that".. Oh Bryan Adams (just a few of his songs, no albums) The kids have a few Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne and Nelly Furtado and Black Eyed Peas fave songs. Canadian singers far outweigh any other nationality in my collection. They probably equal the Brit folk/rock guys I love but I have to be a secret Canadian in my heart... it is way beyond wierd. I have Canadian friends all over the show and I have known them for a long time. You are just nice people who just get on with life, and when you do something you do it well. Hell I will even watch ice hockey... But then I think about what does being British mean? I probably feel about being British the way Canadians feel about being Canadian. WE are a bit dull, have a sense of humour that can be raucously self deprecating, we queue up for things... endlessly, we talk about the weather, we get on with it, we don't talk about how great we are, and when we do we usually do so in trying to emmulate other people..... Ok so we have older buildings but it is the tourists who really appreciate them, but we dont have anything approaching a wilderness left here.. What there is tends to have a 4 x 4 track across it! So Cat, I can look at you and think, I would love to have all that amazing musical and pioneering spirit coursing through my veins from only a few generations back. Canada pulses with its newness, still. I think of Canada as a kid who has still to open up its presents and share them with the world... Cat thank you for being you and for being Canadian. You personally may never be famous but here in this space, YOU ROCK! Lucy >When I was a kid, I thought that Canadian TV was lame >and that Canadian performers were somehow second-rate. >In fact, the story Margaret Atwood told last night >about being a part of the "Lunatic Club" rang pretty >true - if you were Canadian, forget about being >famous. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 11:37:32 -0800 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Another Globe and mail article > Before the gala, Mitchell offered up an impromptu > performance backstage when she was presented with an > acoustic guitar custom-made just for her. When I was on his mailing list, I soon came to realize that many women participants are extremely possesive of him. I had AOL at the time and had that IM thing or buddy system stuff and the minute I would sign on, these jealous women were just waiting and they would attack me, off the mailing list and follow me around everywhere I went on the Internet. I didn't know what was going on for the longest time until my son blocked me from that buddy system to prevent them from hassling me. Then they would blurt it out on the mailing list and it was very bothersome, especially for the men and me. The guys were my only buddies! Alot of those girls don't really seem to get to the core of what he means. Believe me, John Mellencamp has a whole lot more in his soul than what initially meets the mind's eye. Norma Jean PS The fans an artist has, are indicative of the artist. As far as John Mellencamp is concerned, I understood the women's jealousy when they would strike out, simply out of fear that their feathers were being ruffled and they don't like any one else to eneter into their possessive coupling roles..it makes everything become stagnant and old and cold and bitter in their ways. No, thank you! ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer? Get one in minutes from people who know. I sympathize with your technical troubles ! I managed to snag a cassette copy of the show from the radio yesterday afternoon. Really it is all the same story we have all heard before - it's like the talking book version of Karen O'Brien's biography of Joni, ellegantly and articulately narrated by O'Brien, who clearly adores Joni. It was nice to hear her lovely Australian lilt. Other testimonials in the show I liked included reminiscences from a childhood friend of Joni's who is now an orgainst in Calgary, early days with Murray McLaughlin, and a very flattering testimomial from Issa (formerly Jane Siberry). I wouldn't be surprised if CBC offers it up as a podcast. If you get desperate, drop me a line, and I'll send you a tape copy (2, 1hr cassettes). I had plans to go to Niagara Falls for a weekend last year but that unfortunately fell through. I've told friends and family the day I do make it to Canada to visit I'm going to do a belly flop onto the ground (yes cry in pain but atleast doing so in Canada, right?) and roll around like a mad woman giggling. Why? Why not I say. And yes I do get very strange looks when I tell people this. This summer I have plans to go to Hawaii and when I get there I'm going to do the same thing but on the beach, minus the belly flop. Canada seems like something so distant yet its so close (atleast to where I am anyway). When I was working at the Rock Hall this summer, I used to ring out a lot of Canadians. I always asked them questions about their country. They were usually very polite but most of them were very quiet. I did have a couple talkers who chatted it up and gave me some insight. - -Monika NP: The album Blue by Joni...I've been listening to it since Saturday night all the time.......because well I'm blue and down and out right now....... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 14:39:02 -0800 (PST) From: Norma Jean Garza Subject: Re: LCStanley/loving nothing Do you really ~love~, Laura? If there are any other Joni albums that you all feel could use some audio finessing I'm open to suggestions; I'm actually wondering if HOSL could be "opened up" a little. Court and Spark could benefit perhaps but there is already some nasty distortion on the CD (Car on a Hill I think) that I wouldn't be able to get rid of.
