From that exciting but brief eyeful I was able to follow up and discover that the article that the Joni picture accompanies has nothing to do with Joni, but instead has to do with David Geffen (standing next to Joni in the picture, which I remember from the WOHM documentary when Joni apparently moved into David Geffen's pad in the Hollywood Hills for a while) and his plans to bolster the flagging fortunes of the Los Angeles Times. (The caption proclaims: "Geffen cast as saviour in fight for LA Times", and the one under the picture of Joni and David standing side-by-side reads: "California dreaming: David Geffen made an impact in the music industry after signing acts such as Joni Mitchell in the 1970s.) The photo editor must be "one of us" and he or she is having a little fun, because why else would such a sober business journal chose a picture that is such a sly tribute to Our Lady of the Canyon? Well, I think there are some artists who strengths lie more in performances and some whose lie moreso on record. Of course, if you like an artist/band you won't say they're good at one or bad at the other but often times one is greater than the other. For example, I would say that although I love the Who's albums (Who's Next is my favorite) I would say it is a sin to not see them live in some capacity--on a real stage, or from a DVD concert. They are THE LIVE ROCK-N-ROLL band, and of course I mean that will all due respect to their albums. For another example, I'd say the Beatles are better on record. What they created and recorded far surpassed their live shows which even they figured out when they quit touring all together (not that their live shows were bad! Though they did lack energy towards 65-66). All this mumbo jumbo being, do you think Joni is better live or on record? And once again I'm not trying to disrespect one aspect to make another look better. Obviously, she's good with both or she wouldn't necessarily have the career she has. So with all due respect, what do you prefer and why? What do you think about her albums vs. her performances? - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 21:02:56 EST From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Favorite live performance Well, Lord knows I love live performances. I loved seeing Joni live even though I only have twice. Something about seeing somebody in person, hearing their music live, it makes them more real. I honestly wasn't much of a James Taylor fan until I saw him live in Chapel Hill in the early 90's and from there on was a big fan. Likewise, seeing Joni live only made me appreciate her music even more. At first thought I would say, I prefer neither over the other because I think both are what they are. Now with the Grateful Dead, their live performances have always had magic that they couldn't convey in their studio recordings and I tend to listen to live shows more often than the latter. And I'll still go see the remaining members whenever they come to town. You might wonder why I would go see the same people over and over...every performance is different and magical in itself. Neil Young I definately prefer seeing him live. I've seen Rush several times and they put on amazing shows full of dynamic and vibrant energy. Tom Waits...incredible live though certainly a rare occasion. I love his albums though would say he is even more incredible live. I would hope for an opportunity to see Joni Mitchell perform again because when it comes down to it, nothing compares to a live performance. An interesting question for sure.
